This probably isn’t the place to do this, but here goes.  I usually don’t love Criterion digipacks; too easily damaged.  Then you look at the boring cover of this one:

 

 

I ordered it anyway because I liked the movie enough to want the Criterion 4K.  So then you open that bad boy up, and it’s beautiful (more so if you’ve seen the movie):

 

 

Love it.  Just felt a lot more creative than what Criterion normally does with physical content that accompanies the movie.

 

Off topic, sorry.  This one doesn’t make my 3 best, but I thought of it and it deserves honorable mention.  Would be nice to inspire Criterion to do more of this, less of whatever decision making process led to the outside packaging

Here’s my submission -

 

Arrival WeeT - Love the steel, love the slip, love the movie. This release did bump out Predator which is a top 10 movie for me but I think being completely subjective, this is a better release. 

 

EEAAO NM - gorgeous release and I’m happy I went with this one over ML which is not bad by any means. My love of the movie probably bumps it up a little. I think if I had my ML Barbie in hand that release could’ve replaced this one.
 

The Thing CineMuseum - top 3 movie for me so any premium is basically a lock for my best of list. But it’s still a nice release.

@hansreinhardt glad to have you back in the challenge. Like @R1s1ngs0n I completely forgot that 2001 was a 22 releases 😱, Manta had so many great releases, the Steelbook from that is one of the absolut best of the year and such a great FS and Box.

 

Great selection @Mrdugan the EEAaO from Nova was terrific indeed, that movie had really great releases.

 

@jwhitm3 and another Wooden Box that instantly becomes the best releases for that movie, can't go wrong with getting these.

 

At the moment the Premium releases with most mention is a certain monster again 😁

I agree with Eli’s assessment of 2023. Even with that, there are 3 that I’m happy to have in my little collection. 
 

#1 is easily Mantas release of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: a space odyssey 

 

 

#2 is Cinemuseum Last Night In Soho

 

 

#3 Manta release of LEON 

 

 

and another release that is deserving of a mention is the fantastic WCL Henri-Georges-Clouzot Boxset. This was technically released at the end off 2022 but most of us didn’t receive our copies until early 2023.

Number 1 is without a doubt the most beautiful editon of this year, Cinemuseums Last Night in Soho:

Challenge 36: A Year In Review Part 2

 

For me I thought this was pretty easy, I was finally able to tick off 2 big movies in 2023 which I’ve wanted a WEA steel for so long, those 2 being Inception & The Matrix by Manta Lab. Both of these movies are in my top 10 movies of all time so I had to include these. 

The Great Gatsby by Blufans might have to be my favourite WEA steel for 2023. The in hand photos I’ve seen look so beautiful. The lenti itself is also great, really glad this has been added to my collection 

 

 

My favourite OC for 2023 is undoubtedly Leon by Manta.

2023 has been a slow year but there were some standout editions released and my real faves are ....

 

HdZeta Lord of the Rings Trilogy ....simply amazing release ...

 

 

Arrived Just in time to compete and an amazing release that was probably the most anticipated by many ....

MAG MPM #7 Bladerunner 2049 .....

EB /Zavvi collaboration Leon Deluxe Edition and The Fifth Element Deluxe Edition Both stunning editions which are very hard to choose between 

 

Not yet Complete but definitely worth a mention for joint place with the HdZeta editions ... UHD Club LotR Trilogy....

Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of my favorite movies of recent years and I couldn’t pass up either of these OCs

Here is my submission for Challenge #37. It is going to come with an asterisk, as several releases for 2023 that might have contended for the crown are stuck in limbo(my UHD Club Lord of the Rings Trilogy is in transit, Blufans The Prestige just got shipped from China, Manta Lab's Spider-Man No Way Home is stuck in customs somewhere, probably in Chicago, and MAG Blade Runner 2049... well who knows where that is). 

Anyway, I couldn't just pick 3,so here is THE DEFINITIVE, UNDISPUTABLE, list of my top 5 releases of the year.  #Teamopenitup #dontbescaredtoopenyourstuff

 

5: The Shawshank Redemption from UHD Club. Fantastic release for an all-time classic movie. 

 

#4: The Star Wars Trilogy from Creator Era. A beautiful release. The back covers making one big cover was a great touch. 

 

#3: The Green Mile from UHD Club. I liked this edition better than Shawshank. UHD Club Wooden Box sets are the pinnacle of premium in my opinion. 

 

2. 2001 : A Space Odyssey from Manta Lab. This was a tough choice as everything about this release was nearly perfect. However, the reason I couldn't put it at #1 was the lack of a third slip, and the Steelbook from my #1 release being superior, in my opinion. 

 

#1: Inception by Manta Lab. Everything is stellar with this release, other than the Single Lenti. The one-click box was great, the Double-Lenti and Fullslip are fantastic. The Steelbook is my favorite of the year, WWA or WEA.

And I also want to catch up on a few of the older challenges:

 

Challenge 1 - "Show us your favourite lenticular edition"

This is one of my first Premium Editions and probably the reason why I started collecting more and more: WeEt Avengers Lenticular. I originally bought it because I'm a huge Iron Man fan. But the depth effect fascinated me so much (difficult to capture here) that I started looking for other WeEt Lenticular editions, of course with Iron Man if possible

 

Challenge 5 - "There is a first time for everything"

My very first premium must have been Kingsman the Secret Service from Filmarena. Unknowingly bought as a premium on Ebay, but I had only just started collecting steelbooks and could only find the one for Kingsman. That was in mid-2022, around the time I also bought Creed from FilmArena. At some point I started looking specifically for Marvel editions and then came across the WeEt Premiums, and then gradually started getting an edition of every movie. Starting with Thor Ragnarok and Captain Marvel, both via Ebay. But also many others. It was my passion for the premiums that brought me to the forum. My first GB that I joined here was then for the HDzeta Lord of the Rings trilogy in spring 2023.

 

Challenge 10 - "Choose your weapon"

I am absolutely no gun expert, so here's a try

• Bullet train: knife dagger
• Kingsman: Special umbrella
• Spartacus Gods of the Arena: Twin swords
• Die hard 4.0: 9mm
• Civil War: Captains Shield

I really like the twin swords in Spartacus and the spectacular fighting technique with them. i would name them as a hero's favorite weapon here. My favorite weapon of a villain would be the lightsaber, even if it's not in the picture.

 

Challenge 15- "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow"

Here are my Christmas movies:

• Polar express
• Der Grinch (2000): Actually my favourite grinch movie
• Grinch (2018): My wife likes this one more than the other one
• Nightmare before christmas: I've a tradition to watch this movie each year with my best friend
• Ice Age 4

It probably makes little sense to say what I'll be watching with my wife today (NFL playoffs :D), but we always have 3 Nüsse für Aschenbrödl on at Christmas.

 

Challenge 20- "Still missing! Forgotten treasures"

Part1: I do not own any DVDs, except one, but there are still some movies I would love to see in 4k:

• Das fliegende Klassenzimmer: my only DVD
• Meine erfundene Frau: Favourite movie of my wife and me, so would really love to see this in 4k anytime
• Wir kaufen einen Zoo
• Dudu
• All Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movies

Well, now that the other challenges are open than the one I posted yesterday, I'll try my luck again today

 

Challenge 2 - "5 favourite premium editions"

• WeEt Avengers Endgame: One of my favorite WeET fullslips, Thanos just looks incredibly epic here
• FilmArena Hunger games Mockingbird 1: Hunger games are among my favorite films, and it's one of the very few European premiums I own
• BluFans Star Wars The Force Awakens: One of my favorite editions, mainly because I was really looking forward to the movie and really enjoyed the hype around it.
• KimichiDVD Rush: Simply a very good movie, and in a nice lenticular package to boot
• Novamedia Begin Again: For a premium without steelbook I had to look on my wife's shelf, it's one of her favorite films

 

Challenge 6 - "ABCDLMNOP: Alphabetize and Summarize"

My user name comes from the user name Blackster, which I normally use everywhere, only the vowels are replaced by numbers. I like to do that when my real username is taken. Blackster is a made-up word, it actually came from the fact that my dad always called himself BlueStar in racing games, and somehow I developed it into blackster because I preferred black to blue and I never wanted to be a star.

• Hangover 2, Simply taken to the next level in terms of escalation
• IronMan 2, More IronMan, but we also get to know Tony Stark a lot better.
• Star Wars The Force Awakens, As noted in the previous challenge, I have never been more hyped for any other movie, and just seeing Luke in the finale, so the entire movie is just building up to what everyone has been waiting for.

And the movie I'm still waiting for the sequel to is Tomorrow when the war began from 2009. The movie actually ends in the middle, but the sequel never came. What a shame.

 

Challenge 16 - "It's so hard to choose"

Not difficult thanks to Letterboxd, but I've only been tracking my movies for about a year, so not everything I have at home has been rated yet.
