For me I thought this was pretty easy, I was finally able to tick off 2 big movies in 2023 which I’ve wanted a WEA steel for so long, those 2 being Inception & The Matrix by Manta Lab. Both of these movies are in my top 10 movies of all time so I had to include these. 

The Great Gatsby by Blufans might have to be my favourite WEA steel for 2023. The in hand photos I’ve seen look so beautiful. The lenti itself is also great, really glad this has been added to my collection

The packagel from China has been announced for the next few days and should arrive any moment

 

I just hope there are no problems with the delivery... 

 

 

So, the very time the box arrives I'll get straight to work to supply the Fotos showing my choice without giving me any pause or rest !

Oh yeah! I think I remember seeing them on eBay, which is of course scalper prices. But if they and the going rate of HDZeta box sets are any indication, it had to be a doozy. Oh well. We'll always have the unboxing videos. Really Internet heroes, I tell you what.

3 Best 2023 releases were a no brainer for me.  

 

#1 LOTR UHD Club: Absolutely phenomenal!

 

#2 EverythingBlu The Fifth Element: Gorgeous and safely delivered by EverythingBlu no thanks to Zavvi (as saw how they shipped Leon).

 

#3 Blufans No Time to Die: WEA boxset Bond with 3 editions was a dream come true!  Hopefully, there will be more Bond premiums in the future.

 

Next ones would be Creator Era Star Wars, HDZeta LOTR, and Manta Lab Barbie (which is still midshipment, but looks stunning!)

Challenge 36

 

Not sure if too late for Challenge 36, but here are my top WWA economy steelbooks from 2023.

 

1. Hannibal (UK), glossy and embossed, reminds me of some of the steelbooks Zavvi released in the past with stellar artwork and first class finish.

2. Loki or Prey (Best Buy, can't decide which I like better), great artwork and coloring on both.

3. Blue Beetle (French): Full gloss, colors pop!

Being the Picky Premium Procurer that I am, there weren't many purchases for me in 2023. However, I did have my favorites, which are pretty much in line with others who have posted already. Just means we're all in good company.

Although I'm almost equally in love with the UHD CLub Wooden Box Editions, as a classic WEA Steelbook collectorI can't help but give the edge to the glorious HDZeta release.

It is their due to take the seat on the throne of my favorites this year, therefore:

I will soon be dedicating a detailed photo series to these State Of The Art Editions in the appropriate forum.

 

 

2.

THE GREAT GATSBY

Blufans Exclusive Steelbook # 101

One Click Boxsets

 

 

With this grandiose release, Blufans has once again proven

that its Steels are among the most exquisite pieces the premium market has to offer.

 

In contrast to the earlier release practice, this can now also apply to the whole presentation.

Here the box, slips, covers and cards have been provided with the same attention to detail.

The entire edition presents itself with a consistent, harmonic Art Deco design language.

My compliments to Blufans.

 

As in the case of The Lord of the Rings, I will take the liberty of presenting a detailed presentation of the Editon in the dedicated forum in a few days’ time to.

THE LAST EMPEROR

UHD CLUB # UC Not For Sale 001

Boxset

 

As soon as I saw this release, I was hooked at first glance...

That's why I had put my list on hold until I was finally able to hold this treasure in my hands!

 

According to an official statement made by UHD Club (elsewhere...) this is a  Boxset, that was crafted especially for "loyal customers" in China, published January 2023 as "UC Not For Sale Edition # 01" with a limitation of only 100 pieces and I am really happy that I was able to get one of these noble Boxes. 

 

 

 

Unlike the design of the (likewise magnificent) regular Wooden Box, which optically focuses entirely on the few years of the child's life in the inhumanly oversized role of a mere Marrionette - a poor puppet emperor - the appearance of this extremely elegantly designed box, which combines a nearly parchment-like surface with fine golden lettering elements, better reflects the parable that the great director Bertollucci created with this film:

The monstrous abuse of unscrupulous and overpowering state violence over the individual, to which the single human personality has nothing to oppose but surrender into an empty shell in a uniform, faceless collective.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga I guess you can tell that I'm really looking forward to this one just by looking at my beautiful signature banner the great @goose_3387 ❤️ created for me a while ago.

 

I love the Mad Max Movies and I was absolutely thrilled by Fury Road, what an epic Action Masterpiece, so I hope this one will deliver again. I would love to have a HDZeta Premium as they also did Fury Road. But I would not mind WeET giving this a try.

 

Dune: Part 2, I'm a huge fan of Dune 84 and Denis Villeneuve already delivered a great first Part so it is extremly great to get the continuation. Nice to get some Sci-Fi (that is not Star Wars or Star Trek) on such an epic scale. Hopefully Manta Lab will do a release, would go nicely with the first one they did.

 

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Really looking forward to this as well. The new Apes Trilogy was fanatstic, I just saw it again last week in preparation for this and I was again blown away by how good they are. War for the Planet of the Apes is my favorite Movie of 2017 so I hope the new one can deliver. Sadly no one did a premium release for all 3 previous movies. I would have loved for Filmarena to complete the Maniacs Set, but it never happend. Would be great for someone to do all of them.

 

I plan to see all these 3 movies on the big screen, hopefully I will get a showing in the original english, as I will absolutely not torture myself with the German dubs 😱

 

I'm really glad that we will not get many Superhero Movies this year, they really need a break and hopefully come back strong again, after the last few have not really delivered (still need to see The Marvels and Aquaman II).

Wes Ball, who helmed the Maze Runner films, directs the fourth film in the series, which takes place many years after the events of War.

Director Todd Phillips helms this follow-up to the wildly successful R-rated take on the iconic Batman villain that earned Joaquin Phoenix the Oscar for Best Actor. In Folie à Deux, he’ll be joined by Lady Gaga, who is playing his love interest (it’s complicated) Harley Quinn, and the film will reportedly be a musical. Yes, you read that right.

Challenge 38.

 

1. LOVE LIES BLEEDING.

 

Love me some revenge. Love Kristen Stewart. Ed Harris rules (especially looking like a freak here). Looks like a real banger. Absolutely seeing this in a theater.

 

2. HIT MAN

 

I don’t think this has a poster yet so here are two beautiful faces to look at. Linklater rocks and Glen Powell would be a gigantic movie star if he/Hollywood would let him. Would love to see this in a theater if it weren’t for that meddling Netflix.

 

3. DUNE PART TWO & GODZILLA x KONG

 

 

Sorry if this is cheating. When I do lists or list adjacent activities, I always feel like I'm leaving something out or picking the wrong things because my mood changes with the wind but I am a human person who likes sweets after a good dinner so here are my two candy bars.

 

Dune: Part Two is a high-class candy bar, to be fair. And GxK... I mean, c'mon. You got Godzilla and Kong running together like the beach scene from Rocky III. It's good stuff.

 

EDIT: I absolutely do not expect or believe that any premium retailer is going to release Love Lies Bleeding and Hit Man (again, especially with Netflix being a little turd about theatrical and physical releases), but I obviously can't wait to see what Manta does with Dune and GxK.

I’ll start with the 2 more obvious ones.

 

 

Pretty much any Villaneuve would be on this list.  Hoping he can land this epic, seeing it in IMAX on opening weekend.

 

 

I don’t want to get too hyped for this one, another Fury Road is too much to ask of anyone.  Fury Road is the kind of masterpiece that transcends genre as far as I’m concerned.  I’ll settle for a solid Mad Max movie (not the character, the style) here.

 

 

I love Eggers.  One of the rare directors who knows how to use the theater space both visually and sonically.  Always kills it.  This is my most anticipated of the year.
