This and That (Where Great Conversations Are Happening)

Man that’s crazy, what are the odds? When were you at Barren County? I graduated from Warren Central in 1992 (Jeez I’m old). My primary interaction with Barren County High was playing their tennis team twice a year -
Watching this with a friend, so slowly as we can get together: Watched episode 6 last night, Ladies of the Willow World, best episode yet. It’s so nice to watch a show that trusts you to watch closely and figure out what’s happening, rather than explicitly spelling everything out. Really enjoying this show. Had loaned this to a co-worker, returned it yes and I popped it in when we got home: Some of the stuff that looked dazzling in 3D IMAX looks sort of cartoonish at home, and it can get a bit slow, but I think it’s a much better movie to watch at home than the first Avatar. And though it meanders on the way there, the last third is pretty great and I’m fully invested in the characters by then. Then I broke out this Criterion Blu Ray which I’ve had for a while, seen before: Forgot there’s a pretty cool poster in here, may have to smooth it out and put it on our little “media room” (where movies and movie merch are displayed, and video games are played): Great movie. London looks amazing, Widmark is a perfect heel and all the supporting players seem like real people. Movie makes you believe that if you were a more charismatic hustler you might land a Gene Tierney, even if you’re a loser. Seriously though, very good flick.

That sounds cool, I love car shows. We are actually going up to Mammoth Cave, the world’s largest cave system. It’s near my hometown which, since you mention car shows, is the home of the Corvette. I have been to a lot of great car shows. Of course, the big event every year is the Corvette Homecoming, when people drive their Corvettes in from all over the country. But Bowling Green KY also used to be a big center for drag racing as well, and there are lots of non-Corvette car shows. There used to be a big event every year for Grand Nationals but I’m not sure if they’re still doing that. Got any cars that you’re especially proud of? I only drive a Hyundai, sadly, because I’m a middle aged dad who needs a good warranty and good gas mileage. I recently sold the last fun car I had, a 2000 VW GTI VR6. Fun to drive, but it needs so much care that it’s like having an extra child. -
I realize that Erin Moran must have appeared in shows and movies other than Joanie Loves Chachi, but I don’t remember any. Of course, the fact that I remember that show (though I was very young) reveals that I’m getting old.

I’d give it about the same rating, maybe a 7. I didn’t care as much about what happened in the vaults as I think we’re meant to care. And Maximus as a kid crawling out of the refrigerator has already reached Martha-Wayne’s-pearls territory. Feels like they showed it almost every episode. But I always like Walton Goggins and the show tends to work when he’s on screen. Trying to avoid spoilers, but I’d like to see more of a character who evidently won’t be around for the 2nd season. But it’s a good enough show that I’m sure I’ll watch the 2nd season.

We’ll see how long I can stay awake, but I guess I’m about to give 3 Body Problem a run. Goodnight, psychos. -
This came in last week, have been having trouble getting a few minutes at home to take pics and post them. That envelope was wrinkled as it showed up inside the case, no big deal. There are so many things stuffed in there that it’s probably hard to prevent.

“Weapons, which is described as an interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia” That sounds really interesting, and Brolin tends to have good taste in projects. For the last decade, I don’t think he’s made anything that I didn’t like.

Man that’s amazing. That must have felt incredible. I just drug the boxes of my comics out when we moved, haven’t put them in the attic, which is where they were in the previous house. Heavy on mid-80s to early 90s Marvel, though there’s a lot of other stuff. Going to go through it with my son, who is a Marvel fan now, especially Spider Man (unfortunately my collection is too old to have any Miles Morales). I really want him to sample The Last Hunt with Kraven, for instance. See if he has any taste for William Blake -
This may have been reported here already, but it looks like the next Face/Off movie may be a sequel instead of a reboot, and Travolta and Cage may be returning for it. https://cityonfire.com/paramount-to-reboot-john-woos-1997-actioner-face-off/ Crazy.

Looks like Viggo Mortenson is pulling a Costner, writing, directing and starring in his own western. https://people.com/viggo-mortensen-directs-stars-the-dead-dont-hurt-trailer-exclusive-8619347?utm_source=rejoiner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Shout+Main+Newsletter+-+April+2024&utm_content=Shout+Main+Newsletter+-+April+2024&rjnrid=Y7JP2Eq
