Thanks @lunazero for our Challenge #19.

I picked a movie from every decade I own a movie from. I also tried to go with movies that I have mostly not used for the challenges so far. I wanted to show something different without the usual supects. So I simply grabbed what came to mind.

1937 - Snow White and the Seven Swarfs (I realised later that I got an older movie in my colection with 1930 All Quiet on the Western Front)

1942 - Casablanca

1954 - Seven Samurai

1964 - Goldfinger

1976 - Rocky

1986 - Highlander

1997 - Face/Off

2002 - Equilibrium

2014 - Rurouni Kenshin Part II: Kyoto Inferno

2022 - Top Gun: Maverick

1764903474_Challenge19.thumb.JPG.0a41bd0c014f696a45a0afb07b7ea91a.JPG

I started buying my first Movies in 1990. My first VHS was Star Wars: A New Hope, before that we did not have a VHS recorder. I basically collect the movies I love since that moment.

My favorite Movie decade are the 80s. So many movies that I love have been made in this decade. The movies from that decade are also the movies I saw most, so my bond to them is very strong. The 90s are also great. I guess for most people the decades in which they grew up must have made the most impact and left the biggest impression.

Cool challenge @lunazero

This challenge was a great opportunity to do a movie count by decade.

Currently I have 83 different movies in my collection:

1920s - 1
1930s - 2
1940s - 3
1950s - 2
1960s - 15 (including 6 Bond films)
1970s - 15
1980s - 15
1990s - 13
2000s - 10
2010s - 7

The Kid (1921)

M (1931)

The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp (1943)

12 Angry Men (1957)

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (1966)

Monty Python And The Holy Grail (1975)

Amadeus (1984)

The Big Lebowski (1998)

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood (2019)

image.thumb.jpeg.e30b752841f3b8243d032c99a8938b8c.jpeg

So while it’s a very close photo finish between the 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s, my vote for favorite decade goes to the hard edged and uncompromising cinema of the 70s. In my opinion, no other decade managed to produce so consistently a special type of auteur cinema that was also pure crowd pleasing entertainment.

Thanks @lunazero for a new challenge.

As the 20s arent allowed, please let me start with an honourable mention:

Nosferatu (1922):

a groundbreaking, iconic masterpiece and still one of the best of its genre.

image.thumb.jpeg.158c32539f7944d3d3e7669416eaefac.jpeg

Now off to the challenge:

The Rules of the Game (1939):

endlessly rewatchable, brilliant satire with seemingly simple plot, yet having a complexity and

relevance that makes it timeless. A masterpiece.

image.thumb.jpeg.c0b5d554db8ccc6242a34d5f58b76f99.jpeg

Double Indemnity (1944):

simply one of the best Noirs ever made

image.thumb.jpeg.eea54de317331022f295183fd67e0934.jpeg

Seven Samurai (1954):

one of the most influential movies ever made. There´d be no Magnificent Seven, no Dollar Trilogy

without this masterpiece. Well, they tried copying it but none of these often excellent efforts could

ever surpass it. Yes. Its that good.

image.thumb.jpeg.c444cd2820734f8eaa6ae749411435dc.jpeg

2001 - A Space Odyssey (1968):

a towering masterpiece for eternity. Nuff said.

image.thumb.jpeg.daa35472e70fec2518d1393f15fc4769.jpeg

The Exorcist (1973):

a Horror movie that stays with you forever. Psychologically and emotionally.

One of the best and most effective movies ever made.

image.thumb.jpeg.374d3c39f491c8b1c85df42b4e2bbc22.jpeg

My favourite movie decade is definitely the 70s. The creativity and freedom in filmmaking seemed endless then.

I started collecting movies end of the 80s where it was VHS only. Look, how far we have come. Glorious days for movie fans.

@Steelbook Indy I had been expecting to see a huge Pop! collection from someone, thank you for not letting me down!

@Scary Hair If you see SD Comic Con exclusives, feel free to ask me if I can try to pick them up for you. I usually go to SDCC and while some items can be very tough to get (Pops for example) others are not.

1963 : The Great Escape

I started collecting films around 1995 I think. At that time, I used to go to the theater a lot and rent VHS at the video store.

Even today, I regularly watch movies from that decade, which is the best in my eyes.

Thank you @lunazero for this challenge, it was a great idea 🙂

Thank you to @lunazero for another interesting challenge.

- From the 1940s, I have Red River; one of the greatest Westerns and action/adventure movies of all time.

- From the 1950s, I have The War of The Worlds; one of the greatest science-fiction movies of all time.

- From the 1970s, I have The French Connection; one of the greatest cop thrillers of all time.

- From the 1980s, I have The Thing; one of the greatest science-fiction/horror movies of all time.

- From the 2000s, I have Shaun of the Dead; one of the greatest comedies of all time.

20230130_022119.thumb.jpg.5c16b30a39628ef64f0dd78e09c143d8.jpg

It's hard for me to choose a favourite decade, but I would say a majority of my favourite movies have come out of the 1970s and 1980s combined.

Those two decades had no shortage of movies that were at once very influential, massively entertaining, and endlessly rewatchable.

I started collecting movies during the DVD-era of the early 2000s, which slowly spiralled into a serious hobby around 2012-ish.

Challenge #19.

Climbing the ladder.

1930's. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

1940's.  Citizen Kane.

1950's. Touch of Evil

1960's. Lawrence of Arabia

1970's. Star Wars:  A New Hope

1980's. Top Gun

1990's. Silence of the Lambs

2000's. Hot Fuzz

2010's. Mad Max: Fury Road

2020's. Last Night in Soho.

20230129_083214.thumb.jpg.13d015f0d0a9e5fb52354e1cf7fc0475.jpg

20230129_083250.thumb.jpg.de8b254d41e76e5fd284bca4d913878a.jpg

Star Wars started my movie loving experience.   My dad owned it on Video DISC in the early 80's.  We watched the hell out of that movie.

My first personal VHS purchase was Top Gun in '86. Was hard to scrape enough cash to make purchases so I was limited until I got my first job.  Been buying ever since.

Hot fuzz still makes me laugh to this day.  Fury Road was just an amazing fun ride, hard to believe that it has almost been 8 years.

Challenge #18

1. Star Wars: Episode V

- one of the best parts of all Star Wars movies - so far...

For me, Yoda was always the most fascinating characters in this universe and maybe one of the most fascinating in all movies ever made!

2. 300

- this movie is just pure madness! Amazing designs and this art print looks great in my home theatre!

One of the greatest, movie related, items, you can buy, is a ARTBOOK!

I love these artbooks! :)

So the next three items are artbooks, for some very special movies:

3. Wall-E

- great Disney movie, very deep story and one of my most favourite Blu-rays - Reference picture!

4. KungFu Panda 2

- so much fun to watch!

Just laughing my a** of everytime!

...and a Bonus - The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

Their worlds looking just fantastic in these books.

And the last one is:

5. Alien vs. Predator

- not a special item, but eveytime I look at that (crappy) figure, I want to watch this movie, even if I think, it's not that good. 😅

But this "no-brainer" is just fun! 🤷😁

Hopefully I'm not too late for the Week 18 challenge but it all took a bit longer than I thought to sort stuff out as I wanted to showcase a few different collections while I was at it lol

So anyway here are my submissions for the Week 18 collection challenge

First up Avengers Infinity War WEET Single Lenticular joined by my Avengers Hot Toys collection of Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Star Lord & Captain Marvel

IMG20230128150901.thumb.jpg.95530b3ad4e8975be7058168b11776fe.jpg

Next up my Batman Titans of Cult & Hot Toys Jack Nicholson Joker (I do have Keaton Batman too but I'm waiting on a new Cape for him as I never liked the Hot Toys one that came with it)

IMG20230128150801.thumb.jpg.71ceb38aa9fcaec6889f541b37dfa546.jpg

Then we have the Aroow Robocop LE & another Hot Toys addition in RoboCop figure

IMG20230128150522.thumb.jpg.786a9aa33f851667881a4cd3eb2294ce.jpg

Now to finally break away from Hot Toys dominance in my collection & on to some Anime with My Hero Academia movie Two Heroes & this is joined by my Revoltech Amazing Yamaguchi figures of All might, Deku, Bakugo & Todoroki

IMG20230129155153.thumb.jpg.e8246de28bca36610a5876c573312129.jpg

Now on to my final addition & this is from my biggest collection full stop & it's the most recent release of the 1986 Transformers Animated Movie in the form of the 4K Steelbook & while I took some effort to decide on who to use I thought it was really only right to use 2 of the more iconic additions to the movie Galvatron & Ultra Magnus

IMG20230128151803.thumb.jpg.5d423cee268111813eb027275166df70.jpg

So there you go 5 movies & 5 collectables to go with them, I could have included so many more but thought I'd go with these

Hope that's all ok & you enjoy looking at them all

Challenge 19 "Through the Decades - a Cinematic Journey"

Thank you @lunazero for this great challenge!

Movies before the 90s are measly in my collection, so I could only pick certain titles. I chose the rest based on the significance I think they have to their own decades.

1968: 2001: A Space Odyssey

1982: Blade Runner

1991: Terminator 2

2001: Mulholland Drive

2010: Inception

330911384_Challenge19.thumb.jpg.18e5a2125315e71076a0cc2828f4bbd4.jpg

My favourite decade is the 2010s. If you'll indulge me for a moment, here's my little story:

Spoiler

I must confess my movie knowledge was basically zero in my childhood. Kid animes and Mandarin TV dramas were the major source of my childhood entertainment, and I don't remember me as a kid sitting down to properly watch a movie (at most some kungfu movies if I ran into them on TV). When I grew up a bit more, I might find something interesting on movie channels, but still I watched most in parts.

That really changed when Inception happened to me, the first English movie I watched on my own initiative from start to end! As far as I can remember, it made a massive debut in China, and almost everyone I saw online was talking about it, trying to analyse it, or debating about the ending.

Of course it turned out the movie blew/bent my mind, and that was the starting point of me exposing myself to more English movies and TV series. (Around that time, my English was improving too.😅) Along the path, I was lucky enough not to miss out on movies like Her, Gone Girl, etc. And it was these very movies that got me into collecting physical editions!

So in a sense, I grew up as a late starter with movies from the 2010s (hence my favourite decade and the one I'm most familiar with by far).

My first standard release purchase was Inception DVD back in 2011. My first premium purchase was Her (Kimchidvd) around 2015, the next being Gone Girl (Blufans) in 2016. The gap remained until I started "seriously collecting" premiums last year, and before long I joined MP. 😜

Wonderful story of your movie journey.  Makes me realize how much I take for granted that movies have been a big part of my entire life, and that’s not the same for everyone.    Thanks for sharing!

The best “old” movie education, in terms of collecting, is the Criterion Collection imho.   Their transfers are first rate, and the curation is fantastic.  It’s a fun, and inexpensive, way to build a classic film library with high quality physical media.  I have hundreds of DVDs/BluRays.  I return to them often.  I’m not sure how easy your access is.

Thank you for your kind words! (Just realised I ran out of points to give today...) I've got a few great Criterion Collection copies in hand, so this is definitely a direction I will go in. Your advice is much appreciated!🙏

I would say collecting movies is still a relatively niche thing from where I am, partly because it's a more expensive (and sometimes tricky) option. On the other hand, we have easier access to pirated resources here😅, which could be the only resort to certain media... But I've got a good start now in building my own cosy little film library, slowly but surely.✌️

Week 19 Challenge - "Through the Decades - a Cinematic Journey"

Thought this would be fairly straightforward for most members to complete!

Members should choose any 5 films which had a theatrical release in 5 different decades. All forms of physical media is allowed - VHS, DVD, Laserdisc, steelbooks etc

The decades can be chosen from 1930s to 2010s - as long as each film had its theatrical release in that decade. Using films from the same franchise is not allowed such as Star Wars, MCU etc as many of these span 2 or more decades. If you wish to post films from more than 5 decades that is also fine.

If possible, please state your reason for choosing each film.

We would also like to know which cinematic decade was your favourite for movies and when you started collecting movies.

Here is my entry to kick things off...

1970s: Star Wars: A New Hope - the film that started it all, never get tired of watching it!

1980s: Karate Kid - we all loved to recreate that "flying" kick in the final sequence... far better than the sequels

1990s: Silence of the Lambs - incredible performances from Foster and Hopkins

2000s: Kill Bill Volume 1 - in my top 3 Tarantino films, and this steelbook from Novamedia is just simply a masterpiece

2010s: Guardians of the Galaxy - one of my favourite MCU entries and especially the 3D IMAX ratio scenes. An easy rewatch anytime, anywhere!

Difficult to pin down a favourite decade but probably 90s for Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park however still love many of the new films released each year.

It was about 1998 when I started collecting movies - the days of DVDs lol.

Hope everyone enjoys this challenge!

1979: Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Star Trek is my favorite franchise, what else needs to be said?

1982: The Thing—One of my favorite movies, and probably the movie I have the most editions for. Still have more on the way too!

1990: Back to the Future Part III—Part III isn't my favorite of the trilogy, but it is a 90s release hehe. Plus this is a good excuse to show my HDZeta knockoff!

2008: The Dark Knight—ANOTHER of my favorite movies, and a mainstay of these challenges. Idk how many times I've used TDK, but it's a lot!

2021: Spider-Man: No Way Home—Sweet, warm nostalgia makes this my choice for the 2020s. Not a bad movie either, and I do love the slips for it!

As far as my favorite cinematic decade goes, I think the 70s or 80s might be it. The pacing alone allowed for more reflection on the acting and writing. And when I started collecting, that would be December 2020. I was immediately hooked, and are now thousands of dollars in debt 🤣
