Media Psychos Psycho Challenge! NEW: CHALLENGE 38 IS NOW LIVE!

Good challenge, @Gary K! Honestly, some of the first premiums I owned have probably found their way to other homes long ago. (I don't scalp; I'm just a restless collector, always trading up and mixing and matching.) But here are five that are some of the earliest.

IMG_0980.thumb.jpg.6f8e4b5960174461ef3d3b26d5fb3a0b.jpg

1) Romeo + Juliet (Blufans) — I've used this one before. I came into steelbook collecting just after BF had released the R+J and Moulin Rouge! steels with quarter slips, but with promises that lenticular slips would be coming soon. So I missed the first steelbook but then was excited to have a chance at the better release. I still love the way they combined forced-perspective depth with the transitional photos.

IMG_0978.thumb.jpg.5bf56ce1bfa6228461f6f5175c91f83b.jpg

2) L.A. Confidential (HDZeta) — I think this was my first HDZ, though I'm not completely certain. What is certain is that although the steelbook is beautiful, this is one of HDZ's worst slips (in my opinion). It will probably move on to another home someday. 🤣

IMG_0979.thumb.jpg.833256eb40f2feab6ff9ecc2c4749fea.jpg

3) Arrival (Kimchi) — I remember how disappointing it was that there were so few premiums for what I thought was one of the best movies of the year. I still love the movie, and I still feel disappointed that it didn't get more attention—to date, several steelbooks, all lackluster for one reason or another. Anyway, of what was available, I liked this lenti slip the best, though it's the sole O-ring in my collection. Blech.

IMG_0981.thumb.jpg.98dc5161eb355c5eaaa29279fda2e34f.jpg

4) The Passion of Joan of Arc (Eureka/Masters of Cinema) — I can't tell you how much I'd like Eureka to continue Masters of Cinema steelbooks. They covered classic films that no other retailer was paying attention to, and the steelbooks had a design aesthetic like no other retailer. Anyway, this is one of my favorite movies (I'm a big silent film fan), and the edition is grand. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

IMG_0977.thumb.jpg.572256c798c64d03cac28c65f5b159e0.jpg

5) Blade Runner 2049 (HDZeta) — And, last but not least...the one that brought me to MP. I had only been able to secure one of the HDZ BR2049 slips through another site's GB, and then I saw MP's Twitter post saying that they had a GB for the empty slips. I was there a minute later. :) The empty slip was perfect, because I already knew I wanted this steelbook in the slip. Perfect match—and still one of HDZ's best lenticulars (though the other side of the slip is really bad).

Great challenge buddy

Oh man this is nostalgic

1st ever

Forest Gump blufans OAB

I simply loved this movie, and wanted to get it for my dad's birthday

I remember we watched it together and holds special memories for both of us

I got it from ebay, at a decent price, though remember at the time I was gutted as it was the non soundtrack version

2nd

La la land Manta FS

Again, loved this film

Had no idea what premiums were at the time, but just searched ebay for la la land special edition

This is what came up, and I quite liked the beauty of it

I then realised there is another lenti edition, and a box edition

That was my first education of different editions

3rd & 4th

Red Sparrow & Untouchables CM

Again, pure fluke. Not much knowledge of premiums at the time

Was looking for a limited edition Red Sparrow release,  and a seller had both these on sale at the time

5th

First Man Manta OC

This was my first ever buy from MP

I had no idea what MP was , and came across both High Def Ni*nja and MP at the same time

I actually thought these were both scam sights

But then I got talking with @Scary Hair and @ksosk

And hand on heart, it  honestly felt like family and they convinced me to join and try the GB

They were so warm and welcoming

The rest they say is history

I became a Psycho and premium animal!

Dude I want Red Sparrow CM more than any other…. (After I got the Br2049 UHD club thankfully from @Masterblaster) but dang I need Red Sparrow

@Gary K excellent idea for this challenge.  Very interesting to hear how everyone started out in this world of premiums.

1. First ever premium I purchased was a Blufans Guardians of the Galaxy 2.  I purchased it opened on Ebay.  Really just bought it for the steelbook, because the steelbook looked amazing.  Knew nothing about Blufans, but the gloss, colors, and detail on the steelbook were incredible, and I definitely was on the lookout for more Blufans steelbooks after this.

2. The second premium I bought was Blufans Avengers Mondo, although I had no idea it was a Blufans edition.  There is still no mention of Blufans anywhere on it, as it seems like the sticker was removed.  This was also bought opened on Ebay as a random purchase.  Absolutely loved the creative artwork on the steelbook and was just starting to purchase other Mondo steelbooks around that time.

3. The third premium I bought was the Captain America First Avenger Kimchi.  This was also purchased opened on Ebay.  From the pictures and description it looked like I was just purchasing the opened steelbook, so I thought that would be the only thing sent.  Instead the seller sent the lenticular slip and the extras along with the steelbook.

4,5,6 WeET Spiderman 1,2, and 3 fullslips from Media Psychos (they all came together so included them all even though it was supposed to be only 5).  After just a few prior premiums I set my eyes on the WeET Spiderman editions and had read that Media Psychos would be a good place to participate in groupbuys, so I signed up for Media Psychos, read all the requirements for participating in groupbuys, and signed up for the WeET groupbuy.  Thanks @Scary Hair for updating me about all of the information necessary to join a Media Psychos groupbuy.  Everyone at Media Psychos has always been very welcoming and helpful.  It really is a great uplifting community.  It is awesome to be in the presence of so many other psychos who have a passion for collecting these premiums!

I always knew about Best Buy's Blu-ray Steelbooks as a buddy of mine had tons of them and I thought they were great. But I always stopped my temptation when I was in Best Buy to start buying them. I had started collecting general 4K releases and I wanted to focus on those. My girlfriend (wife now) and I would always stop at an FYE to look for 4K movies as we had 2 within 40 miles and I would get the 3 for 2 or whatever deal after her complaining we were there for 3 hours. Then one day we were looking for regular 4K releases at Best Buy as usual and I stumbled upon a 4K steelbook and she said that's what I bought you last Christmas. Come to find out she had bought me the John Wick 4K Steelbook collection without me even knowing it. I can't remember which other Steelbook it was that I picked up that day but then when I got in the car I started googling 4k Steelbooks. Over the next, who knows how many days or weeks of googling, I'm pretty sure I was looking for an explanation of "lenti" or "fs", I stumbled onto MP.

My first premium purchase after getting on MP was WW1984 Manta Lab OC, my eyes were big and I was ready (I thought). John posted that he had a few OC's left and I jumped on it not knowing what I was doing. Come to find out several months later I sold it to purchase other things. (TDK HDZETA 😉)

Wonder Woman 1984 (Manta Lab Exclusive #38) One Click

20210802_102759.jpg.7af917a331f3efe643aef7151f69fe41.thumb.jpg.c7515bb53b0a5f28d50133866fc6eb45.jpg

My first GB, I requested all Fullslips and I can't remember what I ended up getting. I think I got one of each single (FS and L) from the GB and was going to sell the Lenti but ended up buying all individually! Well worth it!

Spider-Man Trilogy (WeET Exclusive #009/#010/#011) Fullslip / Lenticular

FotoJet.thumb.jpg.0fdbb5537582e515a6e72372163f9e18.jpg

My favorite movie, I was really scared about the amount of money I spent but I was in love. The embossing on the white cover, I'm glad it covered up the yellow Steelbook.

The Shining (Black Barons Exclusive No.24) Fullsip XL

1971528723_ts(1).thumb.jpg.7c750a1f900dcb4061cb68ec8829377d.jpg

First premium I ordered direct!

Pet Sematary (1989 & 2019) (Cine Museum Art #11 & #14) One Click

ps.thumb.jpg.0a7b5542c57d99ee002c4e15adb37f0c.jpg

Same thing about the money lol but a fav of wife and I and after seeing the SpiderMan WeET, i knew this would be nice. And was... (led to me purchasing all WeET FS colection.. as I didn't understand the greatness of a Lenti yet)

Brightburn (WeET COLLECTION Collection #12) Fullslip

1241370199_BB(1).thumb.jpg.1c31d6d25e67f8d812a317e515f5ecdc.jpg

I bought each SL separately but then ended up getting all OC's with the same number. The GOAT purchase!

The Dark Knight Trilogy (HDZeta Gold Label Exclusive #20,#21,#23) One Click

Week 5 challenge - many thanks to @Gary K for this suggestion!

1. Batman v Superman - HDZeta Double Lenticular (first edition)

Absolutely love this double lenticular slip and it is the only steelbook art I could tolerate for this film! One of the first HDZeta editions I owned and a very kind member on this fantastic forum sold this to me at a very reasonable price! This was one of many reasons I stumbled onto the world of MP and remained since 2019. Also led me down the path to own several more HDZeta DL slips.

2. Doctor Strange - Blufans Double Lenticular

Think this is easily my favourite Blufans DL although GOTG2 and Thor Ragnarok are close! Chose this edition as it was the last DL I bought from Blufans MCU early releases and a definite grail which took many months of hunting. The depth of the lenticular image and the outstanding sharpness always makes it a great day when taken off the shelf.

3. Man of Steel - Manta Lab Lenticular

Manta's first release (I think?) and the transition on the lenticular slip was really good. Great effort put in by Manta and it did not take much convincing for me to purchase further editions from them.

4. Kill Bill Volume 2 - Novamedia  Fullslip A

Another retailer who released some incredible editions and a fullslip rather than a lenti. Chose this slip as it was one of the first Nova slips I bought and I really love the snakeskin detail on the slip. Steelbook looks great but nothing quite beats the pure brilliance of Volume 1's yellow steelbook. Pulp Fiction Fullslip A is also tremendous and it will be interesting to see what Manta have up their sleeve for their Tarantino releases.

5. Avengers Endgame - WeET Fullslip A2

Chose this edition as it was one of my first GB editions from MP and led to buy more WeET releases. The embossing and detail on all their fullslips are incredible and I love seeing the light shine off this slip, similar to t\one of heir earlier GOTG2 slips.

New challenge! Steelbooks, My History, by Chief_lookout! Ok, so my collecting got off to an auspicious start; I moved in with my wife, went digital with most of my collection, and started selling off the physical, including steels cause I really didn't care at that point (Including my 40th anniversary Labyrinth steel). So, once I started looking at steels as movie art collectibles instead of just another movie case, they became desirable to me, at about the same time they blew up everywhere!
So I started collecting market steels wherever I saw them, and joined the steelbook subreddit, where I plummeted face-first into premium steels, and a world of all new terminology. Someone mentioned the Blade Runner Manta Lab coming soon, so I marked the date and created a profile on collectong. Woke up very early (I live in US) picked the ine click the second it went live, and by the time I got to checkout all of them were gone!
Distraught, I went back to reddit, complaining, and they suggested a group buy. So I joined MP and tried to join the Blade Runner group buy (obviously dumb to me now) which of course was closed, but after looking around, I found a sale put on by @Masterblaster , so I made a purchase (my memory fails me which one), which qualified me for early access to the End of Year sale!

OVERWHELMING to a new premium collector to say the least! I punished my credit card that day, and made many, many purchases that day! I have since joined group buys and the rest is history! Below are the first five I bought from the End of Year sale, and basically my first premiums!

Weet Bloodshot SL, HDZeta Gold 300 OC, Interstellar UHD Club, Logan Manta Lab DL, and Inception HDZeta Silver SL. Thanks for looking, this was fun!

Edit: Blade Runner Manta Lab OC has a happy ending! I mentioned during End of Year sale I wanted one, and @Masterblaster let me know he had one available, so I was able to pick that one up, as well!

Challenge #5 - This was a fun one! Had to dig into old order confirmations and my PP account to see which were actually my firsts. I went 0-100 real quick on the premium collection. This $#*! is addicting yo!

1. First ever premium order actually stemmed from my second ever (there is order to this logic eventually). I had previously bought the Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 steels (along with Gladiator) from Best Buy. My very first ever of the steelbook variety. After getting sucked into collecting them from that point on I started to wonder what else was out there for Tarantino. My search turned up all those amazing premium editions, but also premiums as a thing in general. These 2 were the very first I could not resist from the rabbit hole I was about to plunge down.

20221010_154524.thumb.jpg.b89f1d811f8fca74ea696e646ece8297.jpg20221010_154544.thumb.jpg.aafd1106d550ab02f9b0dc2fdd5f1fcb.jpg

2. Why was my first premium not Tarantino when that search is what led me to premiums in the first place?? Because I was struggling hard on which editions to choose (only 1 of each... at the time 😬), as well as digging deep into my soul (and wallet 💸) to determine if this was really a hobby I wanted to invest in more seriously and hook myself on.

Spoiler

It was!

So with editions finally chosen, I give you my 2nd ever order and the result of my first Covid stimulus check...

20221010_155049.thumb.jpg.1eaa915be07ac7bff4e8af38728d8d29.jpg

yelling the lord of the rings GIF

3. I'm a sucker for musicals and this is a shared favorite of both the girlfriend and me, so snagged this one shortly after the first two to help try and justify the new hobby and "investments" to her... plus it's just dang pretty!

20221010_155220.thumb.jpg.9cf1ba757a9d88b53456afe305ba499e.jpg

4 and 5, and the very first of the MP group buys... I wasn't sure how to choose. I was originally led to MP when I decided to jump on a premium Marvel collection (VERY late in the game) and wanted to check out both what MP was all about after the little I'd heard and to try and get myself into the Endgame GB. That journey led me to Cinemuseum and their release of The Goonies while waiting on the Endgame GB to open. So...

4. Very first MP GB joined.

20221010_160310.thumb.jpg.f537ca976c248112f704f37f8628ab80.jpg

5. But, very first MP premium paid for and received (cause you know... CM wait times be like *taps watch).

20221010_155627.thumb.jpg.e07fc065a28e81e36e1a3e3a0e5ad89a.jpg

Honorable mention to CM The Grinch. Actually my 2nd ever MP GB joined, but that thing didn't release until forever and a day later ⏱️🥀

thank you for a fun challenge @Gary K.

Here is my submission for Psycho Challenge - Week 5, There’s A First Time For Everything, a/k/a We Were All Newbies Once

I've been interested in Steelbooks for a long time, I would import them from Japan and I used to have nice collection. Overtime that changed and I only followed Best Buy releases.

I stumbled onto my first premium this past December/January, through eBay no less. I was searching for an Amazing Spider-man steelbook and came across listings for WeET FullSlips. Never heard of them, but bought one anyway, and after that it has just been a snowball effect. I pretty much instantly sold the FullSlip I bought, and got the OC instead.

Still using eBay I started to randomly search films using terms ('Steelbook, FullSlip, One Click'). I came across an OC for Insidious from Nova and bought it without hesitation. I love James Wan and had never seen a boxset like that for one of his films. It also started my love for low numbers as I got lucky and somehow got number (002).

I found Black Barons next, and was blown away by the titles they offer. I love horror and they have some of the best. I really hope they start to release more editions. I believe I heard something about Malignant being a possibility? Anyway, I bought IT Chapter 1 and 2 first from them.

Last, is Pet Sematary One Click from Cinemuseum, and this is what brought me to MP. I started doing google searches for Cinemuseum titles and found a forum/thread on MP. Made an account and was asking Scary Hair about group buys and how to make sure I wouldn't miss out on the Batman from CM. Now my collection has a lot of CM, well over thirty titles when you include (CME/CMC/CMA).

Challenge #5

I don't remember what I got or when I got it these past ten years, but I can think of some early gets that "evolved" me as a collector.

1. "Les Miserables" (Target) - "Oh hey, that's a fancy edition in this store. I should get more of these."

IMG_20221011_003439.thumb.jpg.3ae57b3e494bef60f85c66dfc6daa341.jpg

2. "Cleopatra" (Multi-Retail) - "Oh cool, a Japanese 'Premium' edition. I hope it's not cheaper on a separate website."

IMG_20221011_003800.thumb.jpg.c1040f97a88e66be4adf98c68852e792.jpg

3. "Birdman" (FilmArena) - "I'm glad I spotted that. It's gorgeous. I should keep up with this website."

IMG_20221011_003827.thumb.jpg.9b878b1b3629672c3be5a86f7969c1eb.jpg

4. "Whiplash" (Kimchi) - "These things are awesome! I can't wait to get more!"

IMG_20221011_004427.thumb.jpg.b8c987d2becff2984fc55a5107ba7600.jpg

5. "Pulp Fiction" (Nova Media) - "I just spent how much for three copies of the same Blu-Ray? Just because they have different slip cases? Well, I guess this is my thing now..."

Happy Sunday challengers.   After a fun week 4 challenge from @raylight that was all about going places, it’s time to announce week 5 where we will be dusting off our way-back machines and going back in time, so without further ado…

Psycho Challenge - Week 5

There’s A First Time For Everything

a/k/a We Were All Newbies Once

For week 5, members need to dig back deep to when they first started collecting premiums.

To satisfy the week, you must post 5 different premiums from at least 3 different retailers that represent the first (or close to the first) you ever owned.

In addition, this week is all about our origin stories so for each release, please let us know why/how you found and acquired that particular edition and what about it motivated you to continue collecting that retailer or premiums in general.

Finally, one of the editions should be the one that you first bought when you joined MP, or the title that led you to MP.

Let’s see how we all got started!!

Lets Go Jeopardy GIF by ABC Networkseason 10 episode 21 GIF

also don’t forget - if you have an idea for a weekly challenge let @extantsrevenge know by saying so in your submission.

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops II

My very first steelbook, and I didn't know it was a thing back in 2012. I didn't even know it came with the Hardened Edition, I just wanted the Nuketown DLC and stuff. Ahh, sweet innocence.

20221010_220939.thumb.jpg.5d7bb1ce3ad321f36da9fc8c2c162bdf.jpg

2. Alien

From Filmarena, this is my first intentional premium purchase. I bought it because Alien is a classic, and the slip looked pretty cool. It wasn't until I got it that I realized just how awesome it was, and solidified my opinion of FAC as a quality retailer. Too bad everything else solidified them as slower than snails 😂

20221010_221224.thumb.jpg.51960852889eb1d68b6ed33448e601b0.jpg

3. From Dusk Till Dawn

This is a KimchiDVD buy from eBay, the price made me wish I got into this hobby much earlier. But damn if it wasn't worth it, the slip is just gorgeous. I don't have much more from Kimchi, but they do good work.

20221010_221431.thumb.jpg.af2f96e441c16de3f132bb89367a7203.jpg

4. Hellboy II: The Golden Army

I think this is technically my second movie premium, I had pre-ordered it before buying the previous ones. The first would have been Shaun of the Dead, but EverythingBlu dragged their feet on that one. In any case, this is a good premium, simple yet elegant. It's too be EB went under.

20221010_221751.thumb.jpg.a002c4c7f193d4b33a0c42749ff9eb26.jpg

5. Spider-Man Trilogy

One of my earliest buys from Media Psychos, and the first premium to be delivered. I think my very first was Lord of the Rings, and we're all still waiting for that 🤣

What can I say? The movies are awesome, and WeET is awesome. The boxset is awesome. Awesome awesome awesome.

1/ Mon premier achat : Avengers Endgame (Weetcollection)

4/ Mon quatrième achat (Mon premier chez MP) : The Eternals (SM Life)

En lisant des commentaires sur les réseaux sociaux, j'ai entendu parler de MP, par curiosité je m'y suis inscrit. Et me voilà donc parmi vous, dansMon cin cette superbe communauté

5/ Mon cinquième achat : Venom Let There Be Carnage (Weetcollection).

Julien.

perfect challenge as many psychos share their movie stories. great reading 🙂

i have always loved watching films and having them at home on dvd was the best way to watch whatever i want and whenever i want. i started building my dvd collection when i was at high school. few years later i bought PS3 to have bluray player and i slowly began with blurays. this was the time of my university and shortly after that when i got married, started family, moved to our own flat etc - so there was never enough money. as i loved movies, i was looking for the best prices for the films i wanted and in 06/2013 i found website of filmarena. at that time they used to have regular videos about new films (mainly unboxing videos), they showed the versions of released films and this was the first time ever when i noticed something like steelbook. the first steelbook i ever bought was skyfall

skyfall.thumb.jpg.fc2af139504e2b8c82046a236087647e.jpg

i believe this changed the direction of my collection as i started to look for the steelbooks also from other countries, usually via ebay. at that time steelbooks were appearing only sometimes here, not like in other countries. in 01/2015 i made and order in FA with my first premium editions - interview with the vampire and heat, but i wanted them mainly because of the steelbooks themselves.

fac.thumb.jpg.f14091b2c9884d54a7a97fccb1de9b27.jpg

but when i saw the edition and the extra goodies, i was very surprised. again i turned to ebay to search for many films. here i found out that there are many international retailers that focus on premium editions. in the next months and years i have made some direct orders from several retailers (i think that argo was my first order from hdzeta (2017), constantine from mantalab (2016) and kill bill 1 (on the photo together with 2nd part) from novamedia (2017); i am not 100% sure about the years...)

argo.thumb.jpg.720b9a81de12a461006b8da26f39225b.jpg

constantine.thumb.jpg.4335b60b3c2b9694d30cbb3a0dcf8170.jpg

1141900361_killbill.thumb.jpg.fff8a93f6d6b99b4b528b2502f80a224.jpg

in the meantime i was still looking for some films that i was not able to buy when they were released (i didnt know about them, i didnt have money for them, i missed the preorders etc.) so ebay was very helpful. during the years i bought some films via this channel.

ebay.thumb.jpg.496fe87f926e6e917d19dd968513028b.jpg

anyway, when i was looking for some information about new releases, i found MP website. i used to come here from time to time and read about the planned realeses or released titles (to see the actual photos, to find out what language is on the bluray etc). the moment i signed in was (if i remember correctly) the batman trilogy by hdzeta. these films obviously deserve the special treatment but on the other hand i had no experience with any group buy, the editions were very expensive and i was not sure if i ever see the editions (or my money back). i have seen plenty of risks, but finally, i decided to join this special community in 2018 and i dont regret it.

1644548334_MP-BATMANTRILOGY.thumb.jpg.524cfc1ac31ce3b4214f48864bb46337.jpg

since that time MP became part of my breakfast ritual when i am working (from the office or from home), i almost always:
- check the NHL results or other sports results
- read the newspaper online
- check the movie news from a local website
- check MP to see whats new 🙂

thank you for being able to be part of this great community of psychos.

Challenge Nr. 5  @Gary K  @extantsrevenge

It all started for me in 2019 with Weet Collection's Premium Edition from „The Amazing Spider-Man“ …. I saw the Edition and thought it was Super-Dupa-Mega-Awesome-Cool !! So I bought two editions, part 1 and 2 …. and since then I've been collecting Marvel and DC as premium Editions as well.

My first Premium Editions ....

image.thumb.jpeg.3ff38a93d12e3a7cc5a7761206eb77fe.jpeg

My first GB at MP

image.thumb.jpeg.48e49a8e08e49273685db5f28f96e3a3.jpeg

My cheapest Edition (...to date)

image.thumb.jpeg.1a4f49f905f7597a50d765fe9e28c1ed.jpeg

My most expensive Edition

image.thumb.jpeg.cab19312df6c6fa217213b6a6160e838.jpeg

Actually, I had made up my mind to only buy DC and Marvel because the editions are already expensive ... but things turned out differently

Manta Lab releases "Godzilla vs Kong" and what can I say, WOW ... what a great Edition.

So I expanded my collection circle to include SciFi & Fantasy 😅

Am I too late?  Late submissions allowed?

It's 1997, I was living in Gramercy Park in New York.  I walked down 3rd Avenue and went in to a store called Blockbuster.  There was this new thing called a DVD.  There were only about 30 of them in the bin.  I bought Amadeus.  I started collecting DVDs, at one point I believe I owned all that had been released in the US. (there weren't that many).  :)

.  247704083_20221011AmadeusVideoIMG_1935.thumb.JPG.77ce374837e803f1fd8c1582e67e65a0.JPG

My DVD collection and my Blu-Ray collection grew.  When 4K came out and I thought about re-buying titles, I was like nah, I'm done.

I'm an obsessive vinyl collector, and have been largely focused on that for a long long time, so I never really noticed Steelbooks.

Then . . . a month ago (09/22), I walk in to Barnes and Noble and buy these.  Okay, I get it, these feel like endgame video collectibles.

1238461200_20221011IndianaJonesSteelbooksIMG_1936.thumb.JPG.42e543da7c93bfb883fb1881e9d7e718.JPG

I start researching and discover this community called Media Psychos.  Wow.  I am a firm believer in finding the experts and learning from them, no need to reinvent the wheel.  And that's what the MP community is: a group of helpful, friendly, experts.

I make my first Group Buy for Manta Lab ZSJL.

722524094_20221011JusticeLeageMantaLabIMG_1937.thumb.JPG.84fbd6fdaf8c874341194e138cf526ce.JPG

 This . . . . . . . . . . this is fun.

As a filmmaker I am often asked to shoot in 6k, or 8k.  It's sexy, it's fun to talk about, it gives you cache, and yes it's more flexible for cropping and editing, but . . . 4K as a deliverable is as good as I will ever need for viewing on a large TV from 8-20 feet in a living room.

4K Steelbooks and the art on these amazing premiums feel like the sweet spot for movie collecting.

Looking forward to becoming a part of the MP community.

Hey Gary!  No, I left NYC a few years ago.  I still have clients there and am back frequently, but the Shenandoah Valley was calling.  I miss the city, and can see myself moving back, but Covid made it an easy decision to hide out for a while.  Where in Long Island?  I used to go to Montauk and Amagansett in the summers a lot.

Prob don't want to derail the thread too much, feel free to PM me.

Challenge 5

Probably my first blu fan premium purchased.  Been a while now so hard to remember :)

I got this through a group buy on another forum.  I was impressed with the packaging and had to have more blu fans and other premium releases.

3787E245-9278-4970-AE4D-AB9DB67782F1.thumb.jpeg.74f928c302208e6834d9c0d44727e20b.jpeg

One of the first few FACs that I bought.  This was acquired via a GB on another forum.  I enjoyed the Equalizer and needed a premium and I believe at the time, this was the only premium that existed.  I was impressed by the overall packaging and smaller print run, making me want more FAC releases in my collection.

This was one of the first few Kimchi releases I purchased directly from Kimchi. Very impressed with Kimchis offerings and  I have many other Kimchi releases in my collection.  This release was probably the one that really got me into Kimchi.

This was my first Nova purchase, purchased directly from Novas shop.  The quality of their slips had me coming back for more.  I wound up purchasing all the Avengers Nova premiums directly from Nova.  Still some of my favorite slips to this day!

And finally, I believe this was my first group buy purchase on this awesome site!      My HDZeta collection would be pathetic if it wasn’t for this community!  HDZeta is probably my favorite premium retailer, along with Weet.

So, psychos, attached my five editions.

I just will present the "real" premiums - I have editions, which are much older, but from retailers like Amazon in Germany etc. (Collector editions).

My journey into the world of premium editions began with the search for a worthy Steelbook for one of my favorite films - The Shallows.

I stumbled upon the Black Barons Full Slip, which also became my first Premium Edition, although I was initially shocked about the price of 70 euros (!) for a movie-edition at that time.

How could someone spend sooo much money for a movie, I thought??

I See You No GIF by Teddy Too Big

Yeah, and now I'm OC-pope at MP... 😂

pope.gif.ec1782539e1e6cd44e89a44ad3068ac6.gif

By the way...

@extantsrevenge

Nils, I would like to have back my title!

father.gif.1cbf608543827ce9ef924e08dbf73ac4.gif

Well, the second edition was Filmarena's Interview with the Vampire, which I bought at the german classifieds section.

After a view months I had "established" (😂) a good connection to a german online-shop for fullclosed protection-slips (the SCF covers).

The owner organized one of the low-collectible-numbers from Filmarena for me.

That was my beginning of collecting Premiums.

It was just a question of time, to get "caught" by Mediapsychos...

My first edition, which I have bougth via GB at MP, was the Aquaman OC (HDZETA).

Novamedias John Wick has been my way to the real OC-Love. At first I had the Fullslip, but I wanted more, more, more!!

It took a while to get the empty box for all three editions...

MantaLabs Constantine was one of my first premiums as well.

... and a fantastic movie!!

The editions:

@Gary K Well premium editions. Nice challenge but depends on the time and personal preference difficult to rate what is premium.

In the late 2000s for me the Steelbooks and similar cases were the premium editions of the movie releases. First BR Steelbooks were released around 2007 but I guess my first steelbook was a DVD Steelbook. During the last 15 years the releases changed completely from „simple“ Steelbook release up to the present SL/DL, FS and OC releases.

I guess I bought my first BR Steelbook in Germany around 2009/2010 but due to the contact with other collectors, mainly driven by „Schlumpfhausen“, my focus was changed to editions from abroad especially from Canada (FutureShop) and from Asia. This is quiet similar to what @extantsrevenge Nils wrote, but it seems my focus at the beginning was more on Blufans side than KimchiDVD.

I don’t know what was my first "premium", as I cannot remember. Therefore the shown editions are not matching the real chronology as there were more editions bought in between.

One of the first editions which I bought (GB from John) and which I would call premium (beside of regular WEA steelbooks at the time of the release) was a release for the 2011 ComicCon.

  • Sucker Punch (G1 fromat)

Psycho_Challenge5_1.thumb.jpg.afb3f7e9cb5417cb15ddcab17974e00c.jpg

Later in 2011 or beginning of 2012 I participated also in th GB for the first Blufans releases

  • Let the Bullets Fly – Blufans Exclusive collectors edition 01 (for Blufans forum), 2011 but bought later

HDZeta also started in 2013 with the Gold Label and in 2015 with the Silver label. I bought the first release of Lawrence of Arabia (via GB in 2013) but unfortunately the package was stopped in the customs and was never released. Therefore I bought it again later. Also King Kong was bought after release via GB.

Last retailer in my short round view of Asian retailer is Novamedia, also started in 2014. I remember I tried to buy the Winter Solder directly from the NM webshop but the server collapsed at the first time. Later it worked, but not free of trouble. In the same year also the exclsuive line was released.

  • Captain America – Winter Soldier (FS,SL) – Novamedia Choice #01, 2014
  • Drive – (FS, LS, 1/4 slip) – Novamedia exclusive #01, 2014 (I missed to include the ¼ sip), 2014

Filmarena in Europe started with their business around 2015. The release of As above, so below had only a print run of 100 copies. I guess I bought this edition also via a GB.

  • As above, so below - FilmArena Collection 001
