CHALLENGE 11 - It is Happening Again

Had to get this one in pretty early since I will out-of-state for the holidays and away from the goods lol. Also hoping this one clinches for me that awesome 10-challenge award, since I was unable to complete #9...

20221120_095517.thumb.jpg.ebe1d4365d173c1c45f1a113d790ae11.jpg

Top Gun: Maverick - the sequel I believe everybody was waiting for. I didn't think it could be as good as the original,  but I was wrong. Quite possibly the best film of 2022, this sequel brought to completion all of the emotional hangups and insecurities of Tom Cruise's Maverick. A great film full of action and emotion.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - the best movie of the franchise, hands down. The pairing of Ford and Connery was absolutely brilliant and also brought a great element of humor to the story. I'm also a huge fan of the subject matter of religious conspiracies and treasure hunts for lost relics, which is why I also loved Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - what more needs to be said about the conclusion to one of the most iconic epics of our time? For me, it's always the last films in a franchise or series to which I'm most drawn. Probably because we usually get the great conclusions to our favorite stories and characters (we hope), while at the same time also hoping the stories never end. ROTK did not fail in this regard. For me, the absolute best part of this film is at the end of the coronation sequence, when the whole of Middle Earth is bowing before the Hobbits. All of the stories, emotions, heartaches, perils, friendships, and joys of the entire 12-hour Trilogy, are all expressed in that scene. And with just seven words.... Sometimes I will fast- forward through the whole movie just to watch that ending...and then rewind and watch from the beginning.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - I always enjoyed Return of the Jedi more than the other films of the original trilogy. But I have to go with ESB here simply because it's the key to the rest of the film franchise. You have absolutely the greatest plot twist EVER in cinematic history, which definitely leads to the most satisfying conclusion of that story arc in ROTJ.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day - Arnie in the role of a villain was always hard for me to swallow. So when the franchise villain morphed into one of the best franchise superheroes, I was hooked. T2 is also a masterpiece of design and special effects. Some of the best films Arnie has ever done.

While neither undervalued nor underappreciated, The Goonies was always a movie for which I hoped for a sequel. While the original film was wrapped up pretty conclusively, I still feel there is plenty of material for a sequel. And this is one of my all-time favorite childhood films. Maybe the original Goon Docks clan is all grown up with little Goonies of their own, off chasing a new treasure on a new adventure. Or maybe the second generation discovering a long-lost link to an common ancestor between them and One-Eyed Willie.... So many possibilities. I believe there was great interest for a sequel amongst the cast, and even some new script ideas, but WB wasn't onboard for a sequel. Such a shame.

Thanks for another great challenge idea, @ethnosax!

CHALLENGE 11 : IT'S ALL HAPPENING AGAIN

1.  Attack of the Clones - Lucas was very brave to make a comedy in the middle of his space opera. Man, I laughed and laughed.

2. Ironman 2 - "My bond is with the people, and I will serve this great nation at the pleasure of myself.

If there's one thing I've proven, you can count on me to pleasure myself" - Tony Stark

3. Godfather II - The origin story of the origin story intertwined with the result of the origin story.

4. Duel at Ichijoji Temple - The lonesome journey to become a real samurai is more interesting than a lost dude hanging from a tree.

5. HGs Catching Fire - The existential journey to become a heroine is more interesting than a circumstantial do or die.

Movie I wish had a sequel: Almost Famous - Let's see Jeff Bebe coming out of rehab and joining the Bee Gees.

btw @ethnosax, you can tell you're a writer by trade, your rules were fun reading.  Where can I find other research by MediaPsy Co.?

HALLENGE 11 - It is Happening Again

The Dark Knight

Heath Ledger as Joker...he will probably never be portrayed so well again.

And again Zimmer's Score. One of my all time favorite scores. So many titles that I listen to on a continuous loop when I'm on my bike.

Spoiler

Prometheus

Many fans consider Alien to be the best film in its genre. I prefer aliens. Since I don't have a Premium Edition for this yet, there is a photo of Prometheus. ;)

Spoiler

Blade Runner 2049

I couldn't relate to the first film at all. Even if Vangelis' score is unparalleled in the original... Zimmer's score for 2049 carries me through the film.

Spoiler

Star Trek: Beyond

I just love the modern Star Trek. Even though I watched the first series and films as a child, I'm more of a fan of modern films.

Terminator 2 - Judgment Day

Masterpiece in the early 90's. Hard to beat in terms of action and suspense of its time.

Spoiler

I Am Legend

There are many films that I would like to see continue but just wouldn't fit. Green Mile or Shawshank Redemption...

I Am Legend is far from being underrated or forgotten but with Man Of Steel and Tron Legacy: this may be the film I wish there would be a sequel.

@Casiusco we want to know your hero weapon/villain weapon also! 👊

You're right!

The villain weapon would be the Anton Chigurh weapon, or even Leatherface's electric saw.

The hero weapon.... I'm between the sword of Excalibur, or maybe the laser sword of Luke. YEs, this last is the best. Of course. ;)

@ethnosax I have heard many good things about the Sunset trilogy, and have wanted to see it for awhile! I own all three Criterion versions, just never got around to sitting and watching them. Too many things to watch!

For anyone who was at university in the mid-1990s, I think Before Sunrise perfectly captures that era and generation. Before Sunset is a wonderful addition to the ongoing conversation. Before Midnight is, for me, a disappointing mess. It's also fun to understand that all three movies were kind of an equal collaboration of the director and two leads. They all worked together on the dialogue, so each film kind of represents each of those three creators at those points in their lives.

Challenge 11.

1,  Star Trek II:  Wrath of Khan.  After ST The Motion Picture,  which was just plain boring  to me.  Brought back Khan from the TV show and brought the action and death.  My favorite ST alone with First Contact.

2.  SW:  Empire Strikes Back.  Expand on Star Wars and brought in a dark aspect where the good guys don't win.

3.  Blade runner 2049.  Expanding on the Replicants and bringing in back stories connecting the original and  even after 30 years, still widely discriminated against.  Not better than the original though.

4. Toy Story 2.  Giving Woody his back story and Jesse's tragic past.  Probably my favorite of the 4.

5.  Hellboy 2.  Just Expanding on the universe.  Bringing in the elfs.  Much better antagonists than Rasputan.

A film I would live to see a sequel would be Dredd.  Karl Urban did such a great Job as Dredd.  Just had trouble getting box office when released.  Thanks Stallone.   Might work well as a TV Series.

Challenge 11

1. Star Trek Into Darkness:  Can't remember much about this movie, but it has Benedict Cumberbatch in it, so that is one superior thing in it than it's predecessor.

2. X-men United:  Nice to see heros and villains of the first movie have to work together to survive in the second movie

3. TMNT2: Vanilla ice and super shredder, enough said.

4. Far From Home: Prague, Venice, Austria, Berlin, London, and the Netherlands scenes are amazing while Homecoming is confined to the US.

5. The Dark Knight: What can you say, best Joker ever.

The movie that I most want a sequel to really doesn't seem forgotten, neglected, or underappreciated, but it still lacks a film sequel, and that is Fight Club.

Challenge #11. Quick note: These are my top 5 favorites I could find. My actual 2nd favorite sequel is Aliens, which I have boxed up and have no idea where it is right now.

#5- The Lost World 4k (from Jurassic Park 25th Anniversary 4k set).

spacer.png

In my opinion, The Lost World was the best movie out of the six in the Jurassic franchise. Better story, action, and thrills than the original.

#4- The Dark Knight 4k (from UHD Club set).

spacer.png

The best Batman movie ever, with the definitive Joker performance by Heath Ledger.

#3-  The Empire Strikes Back 4k

spacer.png

Probably the sequel I've watched the most, and the first movie I ever went to a theater to see. Better than a New Hope or Return of the Jedi IMO. The Lightsaber battle is still my favorite and one I would always try to emulate with my Star Wars figures back in the early 80's.

#2- Terminator 2: Judgement Day 4k

spacer.png

Still to this day, my favorite movie experience in a theater. I was not prepared for how good this was, even better than the stellar original. By the way, this movie was the 4th straight classic release by James Cameron. He had a run that may never be duplicated by another director: Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, and T2.

#1- The Godfather Part II 4K (from the 50th Anniversary 4k big boy set last year).

spacer.png

My third favorite movie of all time, behind The Godfather and Pulp Fiction. In some ways it was better than the original, with the old New York scenes a standout to me. A perfect movie, and even darker and grittier than the original (but not better IMO).

A movie that never had a sequel, that I would l like to see made is Trading Places. This has always been my favorite Eddie Murphy movie. And I would love to see how Eddie and Dan would be doing now. I've been waiting for this ever since the Dukes made their brief cameo in coming to America.

  • extantsrevenge changed the title to Media Psychos Psycho Challenge! Week 11 Challenge is live!

we all understand why this trend of 💲equels/prequel💲/reboot💲/etc is going on but the original scripts are not supported by the film studios as these are now considered as potential financial bombs. it is sad because at the beginning of each series or franchise there was an original script... there are few exceptions (christopher nolan and jordan peele come to my mind) but it is not enough.

ok, here are my sequals chosen for this challenge:

  • the dark knight - i wanted to avoid the classical selection like T2 or SW: ESB but in case of the TDK i couldnt overlook it as it is one of the best films ever IMO; the main difference from the previous film (batman begins) is that it has strong villain and it makes the movie go on smoothly
  • the bourne ultimatum - even when the 2nd film in the franchise (the bourne supremacy) had the same director as this one, this is the perfect ending to the whole trilogy, it is the synonymum of the nonstop movement with the strong focus on the physical presence in the action scenes; ...and the editing and sound are superb
  • star wars - the revenge of the sith - for me this film is the perfect connection of the sequals to the prequels and it shows the birth of the best villain in the galaxy
  • captain america - the winter soldier - putting captain america to the present days was a good choice, it is more serious than the first film (or most of other MCU films), the physical action was great
  • casino royale - it is rough and raw, daniel craig's james bond is full of emotions (anger, pain, love...), he looks like the emotionless machine, but he is still a human and the emotions have a stong impact on him (what is visible also in the next films)

IMG20221121142958.thumb.jpg.687e3d6eacfedd769cdd172aee662f06.jpg

a film that is a great underrated gem that had the possibility to get a sequel or two (or even more - as it is based on the book series) is master and commander - the far side of the world. the low box office was probably the main reason why this one never had the sequel. now it would not make much sense as it has been almost 20 (!!!) years since its release, but in the mid 00's i really wanted to see another great story.

Yeah man, good call. I forgot about this one.  What a fantastically crafted film.  I can't imagine what a sequel would be, though.  I don't want him to continue to chase the Acheron, that ending was perfect for me.  But, I'd be in to another Jack Aubrey adventure of some sort, for sure.  (the lesser of two weevils)

Challenge #11

here is my selection of sequels for this new challenge, thanks to for this one

Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Man's Chest

I loved this franchise, the first opus is a must and this sequel is simply brilliant, I  like the atmosphere and the challenge of this second

Top Gun Maverick

what about this sequel which is simply enjoyable even 35 years after the first, it's a successful bet and what a love

XMen Days Of Future Past

I don't  didn't think of a superhero franchise at first but this film in the xmen universe remains for me one of the best with a Hug Jackman who burst the screen once again, I love this film and the trip to the past

Indiana Jones  And The Last Crusade

this sequel is for me the best of this franchise, the Connery Ford duo works wonderfully and it's a big hit, I always remember this first  re scene in the desert and the pursuit on the train with young Indiana, everything is there

The Lord Of The Rings The Return Of The King

I could not do this Challenge without placing this film which remains and will remain for me the must of any film sequel  , an epic and a battle , the greatest and most emotional in all the history of cinema ,

just Whoua

Ok, time to earn that trophy! Sequels...I wanted to choose some that had not been mentioned, although I agree with/would have posted others that have already been shown!

John Wick 2 - The first set the tone, so the second could hit the ground running!

Kingsmen 2 - I don't think the sequel was better than the first (You can't beat that church scene!) but it was a great movie in its own right!

A Quiet Place 2 - I enjoyed the flashbacks to how it started, and the continuation of the story!

Sicario 2 - I did enjoy this one better than the first! So good!

Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard - More Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L goodness!

I had a couple movies I wished a sequel for: Ferris Bueller's Day Off (maybe now he's in his 40s, and he sold out and got a corporate job, like we all have to, married Sloane but they are unhappy, etc, so this time Cameron calls him and convinces him to call in sick, I thought it'd be Ferris Bueller's Day Off Work), and Serenity (which I know will never happen. Thanks for the challenge, and thanks for reading!
