What did you watch last night???

Basil

So with trepidation, I elected to watch;

Star Trek; Into Darkness

So yeah, they remade "The Wrath Of Khan"...already.

Only so very much worse.

Why does this movie exist?

What audience did they think they would be tapping into?

Surely not those whom loved the original version because if so, omg, you need to fire your marketing team.

I'd actually enjoy deconstructing this slap in the face but alas, space precludes me from doing so.

Suffice it to say, I believe that this flik is once more an indication of not what the audience necessarily wants but what Hollywood believes we want... flashy lights, break-neck speed pacing, plot devices that are ret-conned within 3 scenes and dumb as hammer characters that are very very very very lucky...

- Star Trek

- Star Wars

- Alien

- Predator

- Terminator

...remember them?

Well it's 2020 sunshine so, "forget the past, kill it, if you have to"...

I got nothin.

So, I hear my fine Psycho friends sayin;

"Okay Grendel, you charming and witty neanderthal, you have the answers, what should they have done?"

To which I'd reply; okay, even sticking to their bat-scatt idea of redoing The Wrath Of Khan, let's look at the essential plot device;

- put Khan's crew in stasis in torpedoes and have him rescue them and I dunno, take over the universe or something

How about, nah. How about lets put 'em on a planet in a stasis chamber, Khan escapes but needs a bigger source of power to extract the rest of the crew. On the way to getting this ( I don't care, black market, Federation turn-coat, whatever) he discovers Admiral Robo-Cop, who put him and his crew back in stasis as a Captain, is now running the whole shebang. Well, gotta kill that dicky. Ah, so Kirk, not demoted and promoted every 5 minutes is called in to answer to a fake distress signal but;

You EXPECTED ricardo But it was me, dio! | Make a Meme

"Oh No! It's Khan! what-ever shall we do ?!?!?!

etc...

KK that was me pumping out garbage while drunk, in 2 minutes. They had 2 YEARS to develop this.

Still got nothin...

I watched the Skywalker Trilogy (as it now seems to be called) over the weekend. Culminating with "Rise of.."

Watched as a Trilogy, "Rise" brings it all neatly to an end. It was a great stand alone movie too.

Once again JJ Abrams works his magic.

I would like to see him move on to a Fantasy trilogy next. There is plenty of material out there to choose from.

We need a new Middle Earth type series of films, and he is the man to pull it off.

the thing that i find a little GGRRR with JJ Abrams is the fact he seems to short cut some og the endings and can leave the viewer hanging .

YES the Middle Earth / Fantasy is begging for expansion with new eyes and scripts .

What we do in the shadows (2014, Jermaine Clement & Taika Waititi)

I liked it and I didn't like it. I had a good time, it was an hour and a half quite entertaining; but, at the same time, it seemed to me more like a (very) long gag, than a movie itself. More a special episode of an entertaining TV show, than a funny movie.

I don't say this in a way of criticism, but trying to describe my own experience by watching it. Which, obviously, is -and must be- very subjective.

I had a good time. It was funny. But I won't watch it again.

Its a great Movie to stit Brain in neutral and enjoy .  A I will not put in on Movie more  a watch IF its on type movie and a breath of fresh air

With that I will now watch where the gaping plot holes exist that I had not seriously thought about before .

That being said I have yet to watch Star Trek Beyond as The Enterprise was seeming to be a lot like the Bionic man and HOW MANY TIMES WILL THEY RE - BUILD IT Calculate Figure It Out GIF by Minnesota State University Moorhead

FINALY Now I put something on for me to watch

Interstellar  4 out of 5

After all this time I have finally seen it .

NO spoilers review

The Sound recordist / mixer needed sacking  for the muffled dialogue  THANK FOOK For subtitles .

Casting was Perfect apart from Anne Hathaway she is so inanimate and makes watching paint dry more exciting than watching something that she is in .

Matthew McConaughey NO one else could have played Cooper as well as him . He made Matt Damon look like male version of Hathaway .

Rewatch HELL YES .

Premium Not so sure as for me not seen the artwork yet that matches the movie in my eyes .

Then again as Rich and the kids point out I'm akin to

I fully understand the issues you mention wrt "What...Shadows" and thanks very much for sharing your thoughts @Casiusco. 🙂

I truly enjoy the movie but more for the love-letter they are writing to the old cinema Vamps than the on-again / off-again humour.

You are right though also, in suggesting there was a long running gag that was less than obvious; in my estimation it was a slap in the face to the new and latest supposed "Spooky Horror" fliks pumped out today off an assembly line.

Some of the humour though was very subtle and nuanced, which I very much appreciated as it would be meaningless to those outside the know of which they speak, however;

that does not give them a pass for the padding they did in some scenes that just went ooooonnnnn.... (i.e. "I'm a Vampire!"....)

Anyway, the pros outweigh the cons for me but it's not a monthly watch choice, heh.

edit: oh, just wanted to point out that the clip you included "Shame...shame" was a funny tribute to "Interview With a Vampire" (Pitt, Cruise) where the same offence had the vamp(s) incinerated by sunlight. So again, a joke only the devout would even get.

I found your answer quite interesting, @Grendel.

And I think my opinion agrees with yours on some things. I enjoyed because I found it funny, and with a certain charm; and also, like you, I liked those little details.

Maybe it's that padding you said that threw me out of the film sometimes; if some characters had been given more run -or the succession of some small stories- perhaps that wouldn't have been necessary.

In fact, maybe padding is more clear in movies that you find funny, because you feel the drop even more, and that makes you unsettle. At least I do.

But thanks to you I have realized that I haven't seen "Interview with a vampire" for too long. Many years. I had forgotten the detail of that tribute until I read to you. And it needs a solution: I have my numbered edition just a couple of meters from my computer ...

This movie entertained me, no more. I remember it very well because I bought its steelbook in Amazon without having seen the movie, when the order arrived I couldn't review it for several weeks, I had a lot of work ... my head wasn't for this kind of things; and when I finally started to look at the steelbook calmly, I saw it came with a bang, but it had been too long and it was too late.

By the way, if you didn't like this one, I'm curious to know what you think of "Star Trek Beyond". In my opinion it is much worse than "Into darkness".

Last night I was watching "The Company Men".

450_1000.jpg

It's entertaining, time passes quickly, and it has some good things, but I did not like it.

And although somebody may see it as a contraction, precisely, I see it as an attempt to be coherent.

First, if you can put together so many great actors, you have to try something else; do something else, risk a little, challenge yourself. Be somewhat ambitious. You cannot limit yourself to putting them to do something that a mediocre actor can do, something that for them is simple, without the need to get involved, to make an effort. It's not that the director did something wrong, or that there is not a good direction of actors; it has been too conformist.

The four names that appear on the poster can give more -or do more- than what was done. They could have taken on other challenges, another height. And, in general, I think that the narrative lacks what specialists call "dramatic pulse".

Second, the 2008 economic crisis had a great impact on many people, and in many countries. For millions of people it was a tragedy; for others, just one more problem. But it had a global impact. In this context, you can choose to make a serious, deep film; or try to make a fun, entertaining film that takes on this situation with humor.

For me, a great failure of John Wells in this film, or maybe of those who put the money to do it, you never know..., is that he doesn't try one of this two options, he remains in no man's land, floating, without positioning himself. It's not a serious, profound film, that impacts you or makes you reflect; but it's not a comedy, nor is it intended to be a light film.

And all that, as a whole, is what makes me have had a good time, but not for this reason I haven't been able to see its shortcomings as a film. A type of lack of those that you have sleeping in the head and that later make you think about what the film could be, and it's not.

It's a standard product without risks. Or at least that is how I see it. If the protagonists were second-rate actors, or if it had been done with less means, my assessment would be more positive. Sure. But having this pieces that the game had, it must have been something more.

Last night I watched a movie from July last year

A couple and several friends travel from the US to Sweden to visit their friend's rural hometown for its fabled midsummer festival, but what begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult .. very graphic in places and quite disturbing at times .. made me wince a few times ...

I felt exactly the same, I enjoyed it.

It was a bit longer then it needed to be but Ari Aster is certainly the new blood for a squeamish ride with this and Hereditary. Which I didn't enjoy at cinema but on second viewing I did. Have you seen that one @ukade2327

I watched Midsommar without having seen Hereditary. A few weeks ago I watched Hereditary, and I think I like Midsommar better. I haven't seen the director's cut yet, but I'm curious to see what brings new. It is not a perfect movie, but it has very interesting things. I had fun watching her. And it would give a lot of visual & aesthetic play for a collector's edition... ;)

PD: I just remembered that we had already talked a little about Midsommar in this thread...

I had a great time watching it. And I like it. This reminds me that I have to buy it when I can. It's not quite as good as some of us who love Terminator think it should be, but I still think it's a better movie than a lot of people think.

But.... hey, if the opinions about cinema are subjective, with Terminator I'm not trying to be objective, never!. And let's be clear: I had a great time with this one and also with Genysys. Great nights! 😎

My problem with some films presented today, especially those that try to serve as an additional chapter in a long running franchise (like Terminator, Predator, Alien, to name a few) is not as much what they did to the latest installment but more what they failed to do, especially when I consider the amount of time, money, casting and FX that is dedicated to the production.

I won't mention the political themes they all seem to believe is relevant to the watching experience, as I'd rather drink a bottle of bleach to wash down a mouthful of ground glass than waste time on those.

but;

- why does the action need to be consistently chaotic? Why are they afraid to give us opportunity to discover who the characters are and then determine if we even like them? (antagonists as well as protagonists)

- why do the scripts need to be so convoluted? What's wrong with a simple premise that we can latch onto and enjoy the bumpy ride to conclusion?

- I'd appreciate it if the filmmakers perhaps did a bit of research on their own previous films, thereby eliminating the need to ret-con or completely alter previous events.

- Perhaps I'm naive in believing that a good script can save bad acting but award winning acting cannot save a bad script... but I do.

- if you (the filmmaker) determine that subverting my expectations every 10 minutes is the key to my entertainment and if I don't understand the genius behind your efforts It's my fault, well you haven't exactly redeemed the film in my eyes, just made it more pretentious.

I actually believe that most filmmakers, initially approach a subject with inspiring new ideas they are excited to present but then either from external sources or their own second guessing, fail to present those cool ideas on screen in favour of frantic pacing, wild plot tangents they forget to develop or simply throwing as much eye candy at the screen as the budget will allow and see what resonates.

Anyway, no one forces us to watch a film but it is fun to discuss them either prior to viewing or after.

There's a LOT of films out there to choose from and I'm glad we have a built in (civil) audience here to share them with.

I will never tell someone they are wrong for liking a film and would of course appreciate the same courtesy if they discover I hated it.

And on that note, if you haven't seen and enjoyed the following, you're doing it wrong ...🤡

Brotherhood Of The Wolf:

Another great pic @Scary Hair with the great "Rogue" !

Watching "Lake Placid" after initial release,  rekindled my fascination with huge crocs I'd had as a young lad from watching cool National Geographic shows.

Especially the whole legend of "Gustav" a real life giant croc in Africa reputed to have killed hundreds and from which the script for "Primeval" was haphazardly cobbled ( did enjoy it though, 🙂)

So of course, I set out to find as many big croc fliks as I could.

Alas, I think the only critter with more screen time than crocs, is sharks, as there are a LOT of 'em!

Needless to say, many don't quite succeed but a few do and I think Rogue is definitely one of them.

Yes, it gets a bit campy if not dang near impossible in some scenes but then, ...it's a giant croc movie...not "Casablanca".

If you like natural monster fliks (crocs, sharks, apes, etc) I think you'll have a lot of fun with this.

I also think that Radha Mitchell is an excellent actress that needs far more screen time. 🙂

edit: of course if you do end up liking Rogue, I suggest also;

- Lake Placid 1

- Primeval

- Black Water

- Crocodile (2000: Tobe Hooper)

I have yet to see "Crawl" but I'll check it out.

Lake Placid is the tops of the fun yet gruesome again the plot is above all the others in its class .

Then the one liners that have me in fits of giggles the darkness that just hits the spot on my sick sense of humour .

A firm favouite that hits the spot every time .

Dark Water was a little slow and the boat was more like a canoe , There is no way you'd get my fat ass in something small even on a duck pond .

4 people in that deserve to be eaten for being so stupid .

Primal I have seen bits not the whole movie

Crocodile now you have recommended , I had never heard of it by the way AND Crawl that i do want to see are well and truly on the list .

Note to self  I also need to revisit ALLIGATOR with the late great Robert Foster .

Richard Jewell (2019) 🎬🎬🎬🎬🎬 Directed by Clint Eastwood

Directed by Clint Eastwood and based on true events, “Richard Jewell” is a story of what happens when what is reported as fact obscures the truth. “There is a bomb in Centennial Park. You have thirty minutes.” The world is first introduced to Richard Jewell as the security guard who reports finding the device at the 1996 Atlanta bombing-his report making him a hero whose swift actions save countless lives. But within days, the law enforcement wannabe becomes the FBI’s number one suspect, vilified by press and public alike, his life ripped apart. Richard Jewell thinks quick, works fast, and saves hundreds, perhaps thousands, of lives after a domestic terrorist plants several pipe bombs and they explode during a concert, only to be falsely suspected of the crime by sloppy FBI work and sensational media coverage.

It has the classy Peter Cushing & Forrest Tucker & some great snow scenes, however even these could not rescue this film, that should have had potential w/said Title. However not even enough of the Yenti in it... disappointed ☹️ I think my film score icons were being a little generous LOL 😝
