So I must say, my fav tv series are not all included in these - but I don’t have some physical copies of series and it breaks my heart (Justified steelbooks, Banshee, and so on…)

but these ones I do adore. First is *Kingdom, the greatest MMA series ever made and can never be topped.
*Condor - which is an underrated spy series loosely based off of 3 Days of the Condor.
*Chernobyl - just an amazingly acted and well written series about an event that still effects us.
*True Detective - specifically s1, just an incredible show (s2 is amazing too)

*Westworld - I didn’t watch s1, I binged it before s2 came out and I fell in love with this series. Plus thx to @Masterblaster and his sale I was able to complete this steelbook series collection (s4 😭)

(if Punisher had steelbooks or even a decent physical release that would bump Westworld)

Challenge #13: What's Good on TV?

Thanks to @Catgirl for the awesome challenge and @extantsrevenge for the usual great job facilitating. I don't own a lot of TV series but I do have some good stuff. I'll start off by giving you the three series I need to own. I would like to own Stranger Things season 3 & 4 on 4K (yes I know that doesn't exist), Better Call Saul (The Complete Series) on bluray. I would like to also own my favorite comedy series on bluray, which is the Office (U. S. version). I grew to love this show binge watching it while getting my tattoos. Nothing like sitting through a six hour sessions while watching these!

5. West World (Seasons 1-3 4k).

spacer.png

I really enjoyed season 1 & 2, and liked season 3. I haven't had a chance to watch season 4 yet. Great show!

4. Stranger Things (Season 1 & 2 4k)

spacer.png

This show has been phenomenal, culminating with season 4, which might have been the best of the series. I'm an 80's kid, and love all the music, clothing, and atmospheric call backs of the show. I just wish they'd release seasons 3 & 4 on 4K.

3. The Walking Dead (Seasons 1-6 on bluray).

spacer.png

spacer.png

In my opinion, the first six seasons of this show are as good as the two shows rated above it on my list. I think it started going downhill in a major way after the famous season 7 premiere episode. But in its prime, the show was brilliant, dripping with tension and suspense.

2. Game of Thrones (Complete Series 4K Steelbook set).

spacer.pngspacer.png

For the first 7 seasons, this was my favorite show. I wasn't asking season 8 to be as good as the first six, but had it just maintained the quality from the previous season, and had been three or four episodes longer, GOT would have topped my list as the greatest show ever. This show was absolutely brilliant.

1. Breaking Bad (Complete Series on bluray).

spacer.png

spacer.png

spacer.png

spacer.png

This is my favorite TV show. There was not one stinker episode in the entire series, and the show got better each and every year. The performances from Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were stellar through the entire series. I cannot praise this show enough. What puts this ahead of TWD & GOT for me was the sustained quality of the series. Breaking Bad never dropped off in quality.

Challenge #12

I've never been particularly loyal to any directors. Everyone has hits and misses. But here's a list of some that probably fall near the top.

1. Peter Jackson - Simply for giving us the trilogy in about as flawless and timeless a form as it could have been (imo).

2. Denis Villeneuve - I'm just loving his style so far and always look forward to seeing what's next.

3. Tarantino - Not much needing to be said here.

I’ll be phoning this one in.

I lost a lot of my tv series box sets during Hurricane Harvey and I decided to stop collecting them. With all the different streaming services it just doesn’t make since to continue with them unless it’s a particular favorite.

These are the only ones left in my collection. Certainly not all my favorites.

#1 is of course Twin Peaks. I haven’t watched it yet, but I hear good things.

#2 LOST. A truly remarkable show. I never understood all the hatred and negativity surrounding the finale, I think it ended beautifully.

#3 American Horror Story. This one is more of the wife’s cup of tea but I enjoyed certain seasons.

#4 The walking Dead. Is still haven’t seen the last 3 seasons but it’s on my list.

#5 Community. The first 2 or 3 seasons were very funny

and as a bonus pick one of my Grandmother’s favorite shows was Murder in Suburbia, she used to record them and wait until I was able to come over so we could watch them together.

and since cartoons are not allowed, I feel obligated to add these

The shows I would like to have are

1. Rabbits from David Lynch

2. Bosch complete series 4K

3. Downton Abbey 4K

4. Sharp Objects 4K

5. Longmire 4K

6. Veronica Mars 4K

Challenge 12:

Just back from holiday and not well so haven’t put as much effort as I’d like in to this one.

1. Christopher Nolan:  I like everything he’s done up until Tenet as I’ve still not actually seen it the whole way through as yet.  The Dark Knight being the obvious favourite.

2. George Lucas:  While he hasn’t actually directed too many of the movies, he’s had a hand in so many more through writing and producing.  I’m going with A New Hope here just for what it started!

3.  Chad Stahelski:  This is where I’ve got a little lazy as it could have been any number of directors between Tarantino, Scott, Cameron or Spielberg but in fairness, John Wicks are some of my favourite movies of all so John Wick 2 as my favourite and looking forward to the next one!

Now, back to doing nothing on the sofa.

Challenge 13: What's good on TV?

Thanks  @Catgirl

Since no animation. Have to exclude my all time favorite,  The Simpsons.

backing up homer simpson GIF

1.    Band of Brothers.  Loved this mini series.   Still will watch once or twice yearly.   Great story and characters.  As for the Pacific.   I am not a huge fan. Where you rooted for the fellows in Band of Brothers. I just found everyone really unlikable. Could not get invested.

2.  Stranger Things.  Was really the first show I really binged when season 1 came out.  Well. Binge for me watching the whole season over a weekend.

20221204_164508.thumb.jpg.9ed5b1e7fb03f2989af95f07a918344e.jpg

3.  Westwood.

Found first season really entertaining.   2 fell off but got back on track with season 3.20221204_164602.thumb.jpg.103e51001fec5d8f3f271fdced8ba477.jpg

4.  Game of Thrones.  Watched this through again a few months ago.  Earlier season were the best on TV.  Too bad the show runners did not know how to finish.

20221204_164704.thumb.jpg.f137d6eebb15044a96858e213a01e4e1.jpg

5.  Breaking Bad.

A must watch,  too bad my set was only blu and not 4k.

Not really watching TV series anymore.  Would like to pick up season 3 and 4 of Stranger Things if they are ever released.

A Wandavision SteelBook would be nice.

Might pick up the House of the Dragon Steel when released.

challenge#12

in no particular order. And I would like to point out that this is something that changes for me constantly, just like my favorite films.

1. Stanley kubrick. Favorite for me has to be barry lyndon. This guy is pretty much my introduction to cinema on deeper levels. My entry to understanding film and its analysis and deeper meanings. A look at film from a artistic approach but yet still very entertaining. I think he is one of, if not the best director to strike the perfect balance between art and entertainment and has inspired many more directors that I love.

2. Jean Pierre Melville. An outstanding filmmaker and my introduction, along with kurosawa, into the criterion collection, which brings me in to the world of boutique labels. Because of this I've hit an explosion of genres and film I thought I'd never watch and after all that I still find myself still coming back to this man's brilliant work. One of the best noir/thriller filmmakers and my personal fave of the genre. My fave being Army of Shadows.

3. Akira kurasawa. What can be said about this director that hasn't been said. My love for westerns, samurai films, wuxia, kung fu flicks, and foreign film all stem from this guy. Discovered very early in my journey through movies and has made some of my favorite films. But for that no 1. Pick, I have to go with Ran.

So many directors that I love including the ones everyone has named for this challenge. It's so hard to pick so I went with some great ones that have not been mentioned quite as much.

Challenge #12 (amended!)

So after browsing more posts for this week's challenge I realized the instructions were 3 movies from 3 different directors EACH. Should have known it wouldn't be that easy. I spent the past 2 weeks in the Carriebean so i blame my sun-friend brain for this one. Here is my fixed post before time runs out and daddy @extantsrevenge comes around to yell at my failures. 🥺

1. Peter Jackson - Simply for giving us the trilogy in about as flawless and timeless a form as it could have been (imo). And because Tolkien is love, LOTR is life 💚

20221204_170559.thumb.jpg.337587907bee2e1b807100e3afcbe1f0.jpg

2. Denis Villeneuve - I'm just loving his style so far and always look forward to seeing what's next.

20221204_170022.thumb.jpg.596e2b3238f9a7e1a9ae6e9455779b93.jpg

3. Tarantino - Not much needing to be said here. Seems to be a very popular one this challenge!

Challenge #12.

Thank you @bossjon

They are three great directors, but instead of showing their best film, or the one I like the most, I am going to show one of their good films that are often forgotten, and that I love.

1. Stanley Kubrick

20221205-005949.jpg

The movie I love the most from his filmography is "2001, A Space Odyssey"; I can even say that, with Wim Wenders' "Paris, Texas," they are my two personal totems, my two favorite movies above all others. However, sometimes, when a director is very good, or when is a genius like Mr. Kubrick, the fact that he has made several masterpieces makes us forget about really good, talented, brilliant films that make his filmography go beyond the usual icons.

In his case, for me, "The Killing" is still a superb classic, a film that would be the dream movie to ber made for most of the rest of the directors. And that, for some reason, is not usually mentioned when talking about his cinema. In fact, there isn't even a collector's edition or at least a really good one.

Today we can see it as a habitual story, a used and repeated plot; but it is precisely there where the talent is seen, telling a well-known story with such precision, elegance, control, and charisma.

For me it is a great movie.

2. David Lynch

20221205-005939.jpg

David Lynch's filmography is a place with many different corners, and that different audience profiles may like -or dislike-, but which, beating in the background, has a very specific authorial perspective, and which has evolved over the years. I adore his cinema. I love his movies. Few authors today are capable of beating you, surprising you, making you uncomfortable; force yourself to go to the cinema to live an experience, and not just to recognize what you already knew previously. And also, with an unusual ability and talent.

"Inland Empire" is his last movie, and he probably won't be doing any more; at least not for movies. And this decision, far from being a whim or a marketing trick, makes all the sense. It is the zenith of that evolution, of his ideas, of his talent, of the growth and refinement of the resources he uses, both aesthetically and soundly, or even more importantly: narratively.

I remember the day I went to see it at a small multiplex, at night, alone, raining, far from home.

Going in and finding this, those three hours, yes, it's an experience. Only suitable for people with a very open mind, concerns, patience, and the adorable ability to know how to let go... Of not being afraid, or in a hurry. Not to go looking for an argument, but to wait to be immersed in a moment; in a calculated net of sensations linked with feelings. In this case, in an anguish. In doubts, darkness, and the search for a light. Capable of knowing how to recognize some feelings on the screen, not explicit, but at a sensory, subconscious level. I remember that in an interview a man asked Mr. Lynch to explain this film, and he replied: "It's a woman in trouble."

No more.

And it is true. My favorite David Lynch movie is "Mulholland Drive," but "Inland Empire" is so far beyond what we usually see, what we usually try to deal with, that I highly doubt there's a next step, at least the era. in which we all live. The art of non traditional nineteenth-century storytelling ends here.

And yes, it's crazy, it doesn't seem to make sense, but deep down we feel that it does... but it escapes us; other times we find it. It's somewhat magnetic.

In Spain, the critic of the most famous newspaper destroyed it saying it was a bad joke, ramblings of a lost David Lynch, or mocking the public. He said that several times during the viewing he wanted to kick the chair and get out of there, and that he only stayed because it was his job.

Twenty-four hours later he confessed that, despite all this, he had to admit that -for some reason- he was not able to get it out of his head, and that he needed to see it again. Repeat and clarify some things that he couldn't forget.

3. Wong Kar Wai

20221205-010004.jpg

My favorite movie by the Chinese master is "In the mood for love", although I have to admit that I have all his filmography at home. I'm lovin 'it.

However, there is a movie that, for some unknown reason, didn't find a great reception in the public, and has been semi-forgotten: "The Grandmaster". A film that is not only the story of Ip Man, but a wonderful film where the dramatic narration and the fight scenes find their most poetic and balanced side. A very special film where, despite dealing with a martial arts master, and his environment, the most important thing is the characters, and not the effectiveness of his blows.

I hope one day to be able to buy a collector's edition, and that includes the three existing cuts. Because Mr. Kar Wai created three different cuts for three different markets -or audience profiles- facing China, Europe, and an international production. And far from being usual different cuts whose most important variation is the duration, in this case the director went further, and he qualified everything he wanted as if in the end there was no single, or main version.

It's not the ideal film for those looking for action, but it seems to me one of the most interesting and underappreciated films of his valuable filmography.

So Folks...

Maybe too late for this Challenge as I just came home from business travel that occupied me the whole week.

(But maybe @extantsrevenge knows best that each squirrel must first secure its nuts before returning to the cozy tree hollow home 9_9

Anyway - even just for the fun of it - here is my late submission for this cool idea created by @bossjon

Challenge # 12: The Directors

Of course, many directors would be possible here, and I can't appreciate them highly enough.

Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator, just to name a few of his great works) James Cameron (T2, Avatar, Aliens) , Peter Jackson (LOTR, King Kong, ),

Sam Mendes (Road To Perdition, Skyfall, 1917), William Wyler (Ben Hur, Big Country), Charlie Chaplin (Gold Rush, The Tramp, The Great Dictator),

Dennis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, Dune), Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds) and many more.

Nevertheless I had to choose some of the 'usual suspects' - als Nils mentioned it -

quite simply because your works have not only written film history, but have either decisively shaped a genre or

- as in the case of the director I named first and foremost -

provided the spark without which the resurgence of the great Hollywood Blockbuster Movies out of the wasteland of the early 1970s,

and with it the cinematic dreams that have been given to us in recent decades -

in other words, the cinema as we know and love it today, might not exist at all.

1.

Steven Spielberg

As stated above, the modern cinema of major motion pictures (or Blockbusters)  would probably not have been possible without the success of "JAWS"

- as well as that of George Lucas' "STAR WARS A New Hope".

And with the iconic Raider Of The Lost Ark, not only was one of the most popular swash-buckler characters ever created,

but the great adventure film made a glorious return to the big screen.

"Empire Of The Sun" ...

This epic and underrated film of Spielberg's demonstrates his tremendous ability to bring extraordinary characters to life,

focusing on the lives and individual experiences of these individuals independent of the respective atrocities of the age surrounding them.

A circumstance that comes to bear not least in the scene, in which Jim, brilliantly played by the young Christian Bale,

although a prisoner in the camp of the Japanese army and thus a victim of this cruelty,

nevertheless salutes the kamikaze pilots flying towards their deaths and thus pays homage to their personal sacrifice

- regardless of the inherent governmental abuse of these soldiers' sense of honor -

in an almost transcendent understanding a child can achieve.

Moreover, Spielberg's cinema remains groundbreaking to this day thanks to the creation of almost archetypal visual concepts and camera movements.

Last but not least, it is Spielberg's special skill in how he gives greatness to humanity and embeds its due moments of triumph over evil in a way,

that is able to awaken in the viewer the desire to bring goodness into the world, that constitutes the emotional warmth of his works of art.

Therefore - although not displayed - "E.T. The Extraterrestrial"

(together with William Wyler's "BEN HUR", David O. Selznick's "Gone With The Wind and "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan")

will always be my absolute favorite one when it comes to triumphant final Scenes.

Together with the music created for this purpose by John Williams, accompanying the images with a heavenly tonal radiance,

the final sequence is and remains for me the perfect audiovisual expression for the feeling of sublime greatness,

when the spaceship of E.T. draws a rainbow in the starlight sky and the the camera moves to Eliot's face,

whose hair is blown by the wind and whose expression lets us be far from any doubt that he will now stand the challenges of life

- with the sure certainty of a unique being who has a friend that will be with him - always...

2.

Alfred Hitchcock

Nothing that has not already been written about this great representative, if not inventor, of suspense cinema, so I do not take the liberty of adding anything else.

Only that may be rightly emphasized again:

The congenial collaboration with the composer Bernhard Hermann, who has always created the tonal equivalent to the images of the master.

"Psycho" provides the example par exellence for this perfect pairing of Vision and Music.

3.

John Carpenter

It's not the frightening horror elements that make John Carpenter's work so special.

It is the atmospheric density he created that characterizes his films.

And to come back to final sequences - all films presented in the picture are provided with a terrific final scene, which I recommend to the worthy viewing of my fellow Psychos.
Of all Carpenter's works (although I really love "The Thing"), "The Fog" is the one that for me has the most outstanding sequences of atmospheric composition -

or as I always like to say: For me, it's the perfect ghost story...

So much for today.

Hope that You did enjoy my contribution !

(no matter if it still counts or not ... on the other hand... somewhere in the Universe it could still be Sunday...)

:)

what a nice challenge when we need to switch from movies to TV.

the thing with tv series in my region is the lack of them that have local audio/subtitles. like i mentioned in some threads before, i often watch films/tv series with my family and watching them in english is no-go for them. so the choice here is extremely limited..

here are my tv series:

  • band of brothers / the pacific - BoB is one of the best and the most realistic tv series ever. the pacific was not so great. i believe that there were some rumours about another series that would focus on planes. i dont know if this is true, but it could be nice

IMG20221205091923.thumb.jpg.d0d0e66132c8e88b00d88f488a4c8582.jpg

  • planet earth - this one does not need local audio. all you have to do is to sit and watch the spectacular images of our planet. wow!
  • chernobyl - fantastic tv show as the story is great (but sad) and based on the real events
  • true detective - to be honest, i like 2nd season a bit more than the 1st season. the 1st one was a bit too slow for me. but the duo harrelson-mcconaughey was extraordinary. 3rd season has never been released here

IMG20221205092021.thumb.jpg.b635921ae1a5af1dfa7eb23f49655b6b.jpg

  • game of thrones - while the seasons were based on the books, it was one of the best tv shows ever. but the later seasons were going down in the quality. anyway, still a great tv show. once i have been thinking about picking up the whole show in steelbooks but due to the price, i decided to go with amaray. later the 4k edition was released and it got me thinking again. i am still not decided about purchasing it in 4k (i know it deserves 4k and it looks fantastic!). maybe one day....

tv shows that deserve release on physical media would be:

  • ripper street
  • ozark
  • la casa de papel (money heist)
  • big little lies
  • narcos

maybe they were released somewhere, but none of these had "my" language. i dont say that these are the best shows, they just came to my mind.

"Sons of Anarchy"

Other great sets where that came from, but of the TV shows I want to be on Blu-Ray, there is...

"The Americans"

(Really, Disney, only DVD?)

"Homeland"

(Really, Disney, not even DVD?)

"Roadies"

(Well, I'm the only one who would want it on Blu-Ray/DVD anyway)

Awards

thank you for this weeks challenge, @Catgirl and @extantsrevenge.

Here is my post for Challenge 13: What's Good on TV?

As for what streaming shows I'd like to have a physical release -

- Servant

- Bosch

- Ozark

1) Mr. Show - best sketch comedy I've ever seen, love both Bob and David but Odenkirk is the funniest man alive. I remember when it would air, I would record the show to vhs tapes and show them to as many people as possible, and everyone thought it was hilarious.

1966540811_IMG-824310544.thumb.jpg.81da9b8a1b34caec7fcf63dae6c34936.jpg

2) the Knick - a very raw and real drama. The scenes in the operating room (theatre) are standouts.

887546094_IMG-824210545.thumb.jpg.613c6eea460a588bb4a4dff233db9166.jpg

3) Fargo - pretty much anything written by Noah Hawley is gold and Fargo is no different. Each season has had phenomenal casts.

108808179_IMG-824410549.thumb.jpg.7d9d0df1e9204da5c692a767936fa11d.jpg

4) True Detective - (Season One) is one of the best seasons of any show I have ever seen, and dig the Lovecraft themes.

1669611794_IMG-824110546.thumb.jpg.a4a37f5037c42e3eb4a5c57661deab62.jpg

5)the Strain - partly created by Guillermo del Toro, and about a virus outbreak / vampires. What's not to like?
