The Killing (1956)     ️

*1st time watch!

A heist on a racetrack from some lowly crooks is the plan and what a plan it was but this is what finally happened….

Very enjoyable film with exquisite shots from the master Kubrick, highly recommend! :) 🎬

I love this movie, I think it’s as good as a lot of the work that Kubrick is more famous for.  Very rewatchable, a great time, full of magnetic performers

I watched the International version; both it and the original are available in 4K, there’s a Blu ray of the director’s cut.  I love Michael Mann, but it’s easy to understand why this movie was unpopular.

Sometimes it’s gorgeous, sometimes it appears to have been filmed in 16mm.  There are multiple looks all over this movie.

It starts off very well, but I don’t think it really makes you care about the characters who are trying to solve the central mystery.  Until an explosion about halfway through it feels very dull, but picks up again after that.  I think this probably is Mann’s weakest work, but there really are some beautiful shots, the locations often look amazing, all the money spent to make this is up there on the screen.

I will probably watch the director’s cut soon to see if there’s a better movie in this material.  I think if the actors were more magnetic, that would make a big difference.  Seems like Hemsworth never connects with me when he’s playing an ultra-serious character.

Noirvember 2023 - 30 days of film noir

The Third Man (Blu-ray)

The Third Man (1949)

*1st time watch!

Writer Holly Martins travels to post-war Vienna to look up his friend Harry Lime who offered him a job only to find out he has been killed. Martins seems to think this is not really an accident but his friend was murdered. Lots of running around and the real action starts in the last frame but I find this too slow and some of it uninteresting for my taste although the cinematography was great, meh disappointed.gif

Masterpiece!

It's a pity we never have collector editions for films so great like this.

I'm very curious about that Director's Cut...

Mann is an interesting director, and he told about this cut for long.

Let us know your opinion if finally you watch it any day. ;)

The Mob (Blu-ray)

The Mob (1951)     ️

*1st time watch!

Police detective Damico (Broderick Crawford) has been suspended after witnessing a mob-style execution but looses him. He has a chance to redeem himself by the chief of police and go undercover as a longshoreman who has a record from New Orleans to find the mobster killer Blackie Clay who controls the rackets around the longshoreman.

To my surprise we even see the great Charles Bronson as a longshoreman and another great Ernest Borgnine as a thug… enjoyed this film tremendously my ‘cup of tea’! icon_biggrin.gif

Love this movie.  “She tried to sit on my lap while I was standing up” and a hundred other great lines.

Of course, had to watch this again with my son after the WeET box arrived.  Still wonderful, one of the best MCU movies in my humble opinion.  I think my favorite part is the entire sequence starting with picking up Liz for the prom all the way through Keaton figuring out that he’s Spider Man and threatening to kill him.  Great movie, great box set.

Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema (Blu-ray)

*1st time watch!

Some ruthless convicts plan an escape from prison bringing with them a extortionist who has hidden $200,000 in Colorado’s Royal Gorge National Park and these dangerous thugs find out their own destiny… a exciting cast with the likes of Broderick Crawford, Charles Bronson and Lon Chaney, Jr. and the cinematography is gorgeous! icon_biggrin.gif

I like Fuller, especially Shock Corridor and Naked Kiss.  Really wild, kinky stuff for the time period.  Haven’t seen this one yet.

Not quite in keeping with the topic, watched it tonight instead of last night:

IMG_9715.thumb.webp.ddfa8cd787809b15de3b7fdeca4dcb01.webp

Pure, uncut Fincher in terms of style.  The real dope.  Riveting, beautiful to look at.  Doesn’t stay with you after the end to the extent of a Seven or Zodiac, it’s breezier.  I had a great time, wish I could’ve seen it in a theater (Netflix showed it almost nowhere, closest viewing to me was over 4 hours away).

Every supporting performance is excellent and memorable.  Best fight scene of the year, with a really interesting, perfect score in that scene to boot (true at several points throughout the movie, but especially in that scene). Gorgeous location shooting in multiple locations (don’t really want to spoil much of anything, even that).  Would be great to get a physical release at some point, but Netflix sucks.

Just finished watching this one and, yeah, a 4K disc release would be lovely. Automatic purchase for me. Really dug this one. 👍
