What did you watch last night???

Friday, we took a night off, since I have Live Streams on Youtube. So we watched House by the Cemetery on Saturday to finish up the Gates of Hell Trilogy by Lucio Fulci. The Blue Underground Blu-ray still holds up, but can't wait to see how the new Arrow 4K version looks. We just need a 4K of The Beyond now!

Sunday, we watched Shout Factory's 4K Rendition of Clive Barker's Nightbreed. I went with the Director's Cut Blu-ray, since I have not seen that version in a long time.

Last night, we watched Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. We watched the Uncut 4K Version. Arrow did an amazing job with this release, it was such a treat. The Black and Grays were nicely done, no DNR that I could tell. Plus, the DTS: X soundtrack was a nice addition to this. We thorougly enjoyed it. (Can't wait to to get the Cinemuseum version with the House!)

The Haunting (1963)

I had only ever seen the Jan De Bont remake and boy, does the 1963 version put that one to shame. Completely blown away, eyes glued to the screen the entire runtime. Cinematography and lighting are tasteful and careful, the scares and atmosphere are incredibly effective, and the characters are well-acted with fascinating personas. The house is arguably a character as well, as it's ever present.

Love the opening monologue. I would say this film is a masterpiece of horror! Robert Wise's work here is truly remarkable. The remake completely missed the point, I really enjoyed the psychological horror aspects of this film.

Mike Flanagan's adaptation of the original Shirley Jackson novel was truly excellent as well, but being a TV show I don't think it's really comparable.

Monsters of California

Despite some bad acting and clunky plotting, I really enjoyed this. It was fun, with a similar vibe to Super 8, Stranger Things, etc.

This being Tom DeLonge's first feature film from To The Stars, it's laden with a thick dollop of conspiracy and UFO lore around every corner, which DeLonge says are "easter eggs" about the real truth of UAP. Because of that, DeLonge tries to cram in too much, heavy-handedly—there just isn't much nuance. But if you can get past that, there are some fun characters and themes here, with a lot of big ideas to spend time pondering.

Despite the issues plaguing Monsters of California, I do think it's worth a look!

I'm a couple of days behind, but we've watched Psycho II, III & IV. Such a treat from Arrow, but IV is always special as I remember watching it over and over as a kid on TV.

Really tempted by this set.  Psycho 2 is the one that I watched over and over on HBO as a kid, loved it.  I’ve never seen 3 or 4, need to correct that.

Loved the cinematography, the elaborate sets (inside the Christian Church was mesmerizing)and the exceptional acting. Enjoyed seeing the beginning of Father Lankester Merrin losing his faith against the evil Nazis regime in 1944 during the final days of the Nazi occupation. It is the story of Good vs. evil personified! 🙏

I wish they had let Schrader finish the movie the way he wanted.  Really great atmosphere all the way through, then you can kind of tell where they cut him off at the end.  But really creepy and a good character study at the same time, I thought Skarsgard was great in it.

So my niece stopped by unexpectedly last night, I put aside our viewing plans and put on something I thought she’d like (below) (*sigh*, goodbye Best Buy).  She seemed to enjoy it.

Today there’s been too much activity around the house to really pay close attention to a movie so I put on some things I’ve seen a lot that I could jump into and enjoy at any point if I came into the room:  His Girl Friday and Night of the Hunter (the Kino remaster looks excellent!) (the youngsters weren’t excited about all the B&W but they were mostly doing other things anyway).

For my money, the best of the Friday the 13th movies.
