Challenge 26: Women in Film

The month of March is Women’s History Month in the US and for this challenge we would like you to showcase 5 films that were either produced by a woman, directed by a woman, or featured a woman as the movie’s main character. All releases are eligible for this challenge. Additionally, we want to know your favorite woman in film and why she is your personal favorite. This can be your favorite actress, character that they played, director, etc.

20230319_172948.thumb.jpg.66db5b467a0472c946ad7d6972680638.jpg

1) 10 Cloverfield Lane - A great thriller starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a woman trapped in a doomsday bunker with some fat weirdo. Also aliens.

2) Alien - The sci-fi/horror classic, starring Sigourney Weaver as the last one standing on a spaceship, trapped with some fat weirdo. Also aliens.

3) Everything Everywhere All at Once - One of the best movies of last year and almost sweeping every category it was in, Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Wang, a multiversal badass.

4) Terminator 2: Judgment Day - Sure, Arnold is who everyone loves, but Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor is THE protagonist. It's her story.

5) The Witch - Anya Taylor-Joy's breakout role, and a funny title to say. The VVitch!

Favorite woman in film? Hmmmmm. I'm gonna cheat and choose a tv character, since I don't want to choose Ripley or one of the usual suspects.

Thanks @Mrdugan for the challenge! Here are my choices:

Everything Everywhere All at Once-Michelle Yeoh

Serenity-Summer Glau

It Follows- Maika Monroe

Fifth Element- Milla Jovovich

Kill Bill-Uma Thurman

Favorite woman in film is a tough one; there are so many! My favorite is probably Jennifer Connelly, I especially love her in Requiem for a Dream and House of Sand and Fog! Probably have to give honorable mention to Zoe Saldana, who I loved in Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, Columbiana, and Avatar! Thanks for looking!

Challenge 26 - Women in Film

Great challenge @Mrdugan and one I was eager to complete… until I had a look at my collection and realized how poorly stacked it is with movies featuring strong female characters, not to mention not a single one is directed by a woman.

Nevertheless, I hope my submission will do for this one:

Jill in Once Upon A Time In The West

The ladies in Picnic At Hanging Rock

The eponymous Jackie Brown

Rita Vrataski in Edge Of Tomorrow

Lady and Maid in The Handmaiden

image.thumb.jpeg.7d63540bba8575007e192219479f6049.jpeg

My favourite heroine is the resourceful, beautiful and just plain awesome Jackie Brown, played by the magnificent Pam Grier.

Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman and Diana Rigg’s Tracy Bond also deserve honorable mentions.

Challenge 26: Women in Film

Another great challenge to my liking, thx @Mrdugan!

Here are my entries for Women in Film (in no particular order), even though there are far, far more:

- Neve Campbell in Scream and Wild Things (both quite genre-defining roles with Scream reviving the Horror genre

- Brie Larson as Captain Marvel (one of my favorite Marvel Origin movies)

- Alica Vikander in Tomb Raider (I only really came into contact with the Tomb Raider Reboot games and really loved them. Alicia Vikander does Lara Croft real justice in the movie)

- Kate Beckinsale in Underworld (Basically every installation she's a power house, albeit Rhona Mitra does a great job of portraying Sonja in Rise of the Lycans.)

- Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman (Another great Origin movie, this time for the DCU thanks in no small part to Gal Gadot's performance)

- Rosa Salazar as Alita Battle Angel (Rosa Salazar's interpretation of Alita got me into reading the Manga in the first place, really hope there'll be a sequel)

- Salma Hayek as Santanico Pandemonium in From Dusk Till Dawn (While not strictly a main character, her entrance is all the more unforgettable)

- Jessica Alba as Nancy Callahan in Sin City (with a similar entrance, albeit a way bigger role).

20230320_121244.thumb.jpg.571ef5f54f9da77271e384bc9a65d526.jpg

My favorite woman in a movie would be Neve Campbell as Amy Post in "Three to Tango", I love her performances but in this one she's just on another level - so lovable and funny.

1) Lucy

2) Black Widow (same as Lucy, I just love Scarlett)

3) Captain Marvel (powerful super hero, I really like Brie Lawson in that role)

4) Birds of prey (directed by Cathy Yan)

5) Hunger Games (I love the character of Katniss)

And so my favourite woman/character is Katniss in the Hunger Games played by Jennifer Lawrence. Just loved already the books, and really enjoyed also the movies.

Kind regards

Steve

challenge 26 - women in film

what a great idea @Mrdugan

kathryn bigelow - the list of women in film cannot be complete without this director. the woman in the director chair are not so rare these days (but still there can be more of them), but what amazes me is that kathryn bigelow was able to get the success in the action genre that is almost strictly connected with the men directors. she may not be among my favourite directors but she must be on my list.

bigelowIMG20230321095710.thumb.jpg.e4647b3cd8de067d631cbd96fb3c358d.jpg

fran walsh / philippa boyens - the femlale duo that together with peter jackson was writing and producing LOTR. i dont think there is anything else that needs to be said 🙂

boyensIMG20230321100523.thumb.jpg.2a256bae7d441fd00f2d1fee7568aa34.jpg

j. k. rowling - i dont want to discuss what she said or didnt say. i only want to focus on her input into the world of film and literature. even after more than 20 years, the wizard world she created is magical. totally. recently i rewatched the whole HP series with my kids (again) and i still can say that the series is still great. she was producer on the last 2 films.

rowlingIMG20230321100231.thumb.jpg.86cb440442cb7c5a7a3dfe7374f22dcd.jpg

thelma schoonmaker - this lady is the editor, mostly of the films by martin scorsese. she is the master in the area of the film (editing) that is often overlooked and no other woman comes to mind. films like goodfellas, raging bull, the wolf of wall street, aviator and many more would never be so good without her.

thelmaIMG20230321095439.thumb.jpg.b1c379ac585f35c84b12c2c3bf465f72.jpg

audrey hepburn - i think that i have mentioned before that i consider her as the best actress ever. she looked fragile but she was able to play any role. when you know her life story, you can see that her life was not easy. but still she was giving everything to her films. thank you, audrey.

My favorite is Meryl Streep, simply because of her life's work and the great acting performances she has consistently given for so many years. And I think she has a lot of good views in her private life as well....

Challenge 26: Women In Film

Thanks @Mrdugan for a terrific challenge.  I guess I'm not entirely surprised it took 6 months to get a challenge theme involving women.  Sad really, but predictable.

Five of my favorite female directors for this challenge:

1.  Portrait Of A Lady On Fire - Dir. Celine Sciamma

2. The Babadook - Dir. Jennifer Kent

3. Raw - Dir. Julia Ducournau

4. Near Dark - Dir. Katheryn Bigelow

5. Promising Young Woman - Dir. Emerald Fennell

 IMG_1138.thumb.jpeg.ea534d85caffaa5e5a7c048fef67009c.jpeg

As for my favorite woman in film, that's pretty much impossible to answer so I'll say - just for today - it's the absolute bombshell Giallo queen -  Edwige Fenech.  If you're not familiar google is your friend, but check out her classics All The Colors Of The Dark, Your Vice Is A Locked Room (and only I have the key) and The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh just for starters.

Challenge #26

Women in Film

a20322105a905edd957c8e455a9e90d2.gif

I’ve decided to post favorite women lead characters - let’s get going:

1. Dorothy Gale - The Wizard of Oz - Dorothy is a big deal.  The damsel in distress turns out to be the film’s inspirational heroine.  She helps The Lion find his courage, The Tin Man find his heart, and The Scarecrow find his brain - all while standing up to the Wicked Witch and defeating her.  This was a classic movie that was watched on WGN every Thanksgiving for years.  Judy Garland took the world by storm and this 1941 movie wasn’t considered a box office success until its rerelease in 1949.  It only earned $3 million during its first release while spending $2.7 million.  Decades later, it became a household tradition in millions of homes every Thanksgiving.

2. Scout Finch - To Kill a Mockingbird - Atticus gets all the buzz in this movie, but many forget that the story is really Scout’s first coming of age experiences.  As the narrator and prime protagonist, we learn from her.

11F8EEB7-53B1-4DE3-82CD-65100F1ED7B7.thumb.jpeg.b4026a550c239a37c4d9762b7139de99.jpeg

3. Mary Poppins - Mary Poppins - Mary brings the family back together and demonstrates that she’s the smartest person in the room at any given time. Julien Andrews steals the show and is perfectly paired with stop using inappropriate language Van Dyke.  It’s an Oscar worthy performance.

8287362F-812B-4BDB-9C71-B78AA3AFB528.thumb.jpeg.c50bb1c13bc45ca3f85cbc53b8c01a6c.jpeg

4. Marge Gunderson - Fargo - this is the first of three lead acting Oscars for Frances McDormand.  One more will earn her a spot with Katherine Hepburn.  Marge is such a well fleshed out character, and Frances brings so much life to her with small details that only she can.

40522A1F-EDCF-461D-9857-493F85C133F6.thumb.jpeg.c5447151bad8847a3121010b9ae92d9f.jpeg

5. Major (Motoko) - Ghost in the Shell - so I do not own a copy of the Mamoru Oshii anime version, so this will have to do. Major Motoko is a great character, and ScarJo does a fine job with it - even if it was a white washed roll.

D5C03A57-8372-4328-B372-6E603E7407BD.thumb.jpeg.b572e10574f8651d3d871062eeeaca2e.jpeg

Favorite Actress - Frances McDormand - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri is my single favorite roll by a female.  Her tough tenacity makes this movie special.
