Week 19 Challenge from @lunazero- "Through the Decades - a Cinematic Journey"

  • 1930s - hell's angels - because this is my only film from the 30s 🙂
  • 1940s - casablanca - because it is one of the best films ever, the classic that never gets old
  • 1950s - the bridge over the river kwai - because i always hear the main theme couple of days after i rewatch this film
  • 1960s - the good, the bad and the ugly - because it is the perfect conclusion of the dollar trilogy
  • 1970s - serpico - because al pacino is a legend
  • 1980s - dirty dancing - because my wife loves the film
  • 1990s - jurassic park - because it is the first film i remember we were watching at home on vhs
  • 2000s - the lord of the rings - because it is the greatest trilogy ever
  • 2010s - the avengers - the end of phase 1 of MCU successfully combined plenty of superheroes - and it worked!
  • 2020s - tenet - because only christopher nolan had the guts to give the audience possibility to enjoy his film in the theatre despite the pandemicmp19-decades.thumb.jpg.bc90c7caebe753f454a096bb30bec67e.jpg

the end of 1990s and beginning of 2000s was the time when i started watching films quite a lot and also started buying dvd (at that time...).

Week 23 Challenge: BEST OF THE BEST

i dont have the favourite genre, i like plenty of them. i always say that i need a mood for watching specific film/genre, sometimes it is action film, sometimes comedy, than sci-fi, animation etc.

anyway, when i have to choose, i would go with the "crime" films, problably mainly due to "seven". i remeber watching this one at home a looooooooong time ago and it was extremely tense.

  • a most wanted man
  • american gangster
  • l.a. confidential
  • gone baby gone
  • seven

@extantsrevenge I think that I’m close to running out of time, so this will be a fast post.  I’d like to say that great minds think alike @Gary K.  I suggested an Oscar Challenge as well.

Week 24: And the Oscar Goes to…

I’d like to start this post out with citing my love for the Oscars and Oscar-caliber films.  I’m a huge fan and will be watching this Sunday.  I am a firm believer that if you make it to the nominations, you’re already a winner.  I believe that most years one single film does not stand far and away above its fellow nominees.  The following Best Picture winners are some of my favorite Premium and Steelbook copies that I own.  That said, my top five favorite Oscar-caliber films were listed in a previous post, so I’m going with this angle:

My six favorite editions which I own of Best Picture winners is as follows:

1. The Godfather I and Godfather II (and Godfather III (Blufans Steelbook)

2. The Sting (Blufans Steelbook)

3. Casablanca (Zavvi 80th Anniversary Steelbook)

4. Amadeus (HDZeta Steelbook)

5. Crash (Korean Digibook)

6. Forrest Gump (Blufans Steelbook)

DED1DCB5-1B9C-4998-9B3A-6E063B7703B3.thumb.jpeg.ccb886ddaefd30123330447abaefdf68.jpeg

That brings me to my picks for movies which should have won Best Picture.  For the most part, I believe most winners are deserving.  I do think that Crash was deserving.  Brokeback Mountain may have been better and more timely, but Crash wasn’t as bad as Brokeback proponents made it out to be.  The same can be said of Green Book, Dances with Wolves and Ordinary People.  I’m also a huge defender of Shakespeare in Love.  The movie is delightful.  The script is charming.  The love letter it paints to stage theater is a chef’s kiss, and the acting is top notch (even if the acceptance speeches all were not).  Saving Private Ryan was a masterpiece, but it did have problems.  Its book ended by a poor opening and closing.  That said, I’ll say it again.  It’s a masterpiece.

That brings me to my pics for movies which should have won Best Picture.  They just so happen to be my three (best?) favorite movies of all time.

1. Inception - this was my toughest contention for criticism of the winner.  I love The King’s Speech (what can I say? I have a soft spot for Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush - also in Shakespeare in Love), but Inception is a masterpiece.  There are those who also believe Social Network should have won that year, so Inception didn’t have much of a chance, but I’ll tell you this: you’ll find yourself stopping to watch Joseph Gordon-Levitt running down that rotating hallway more than you will Colin Firth saying “F***, F***, F***,” or Andrew Garfield flipping out on Jesse Eisenberg.

2. Raiders of the Lost Ark - Chariots of Fire is a fine movie, but can anyone recite a single line of dialogue from it?  Is the only thing that you remember about it is its great Musical Score (was that even better than John Williams bah bah BAHHHH)?  I’m not sure if Steven Spielberg makes Raiders if he’s a little older, but had he done that - he’d have had the reputation to give that Best Picture good a run.

3. Shawshank Redemption - was Forrest Gump better than Shawshank, or did it happen to ride a great soundtrack, nostalgia, and the box office zeitgeist to Oscar gold?

The Academy/Oscars have always had a habit of turning their noses up at what they refer to as "genre films".

Genre films can be just as good, if not better than a lot of the "artistic" fare that's usually nominated (e.g. The Godfather Part I & II, The Exorcist, Jaws, Alien, Star Wars, etc.)

I think that's why movies like Return of the King winning Best Picture are noteworthy.

It's one of the rare times where the Academy/Oscars recognises that these types of films, which they normally shun, can be just as impeccably crafted and transcend those genre boundaries as the stuff that's normally catered for these types of awards.

It hasn't really happened since.

It’s going to happen this year - though Everything Everywhere All at Once is quite eclectic in what it wants to be (SciFi? Romance? Action? Kung Fu?).  It’s genre bending and truly everything.  I adored this movie.

I would also argue CODA wasn’t artistic.  It was more like a really good “after school special.”

Here comes my contribution to Challenge 24. In order to not always show the same films, I have not selected my top 5, but 6 other films that in my opinion have also quite rightly received Oscars in different categories.

Ben Hur - 11 Oscars (1960)
Spartacus - 4 Oscars (1961)
Bonnie and Clyde - 2 Oscars (1968)
Titanic - 11 Oscars (1998)
Moulin Rouge - 2 Oscars (2002)
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button - 3 Oscars (2009)

And like many others I think that Saving Private Ryan 1999 deserved an Oscar for Best Picture. Especially when you compare it to the winner "Shakespeare in Love" from that year.

PSYCHO CHALLENGE - WEEK 24

"And The OSCAR Goes To...."

Academy Awards Oscar GIF

To celebrate the 95th annual Academy Awards, it seemed only fitting that this week’s challenge ask participants to select their five (5) favorite academy award winning films from over the years.

Winning in any category will count, though I think it would be more fun to keep it to the major categories (picture, directing, acting and cinematography).  Being nominated doesn’t count since no one likes a loser, lol.

In addition to the five (5) winners, you must also present your favorite film that you think SHOULD have won best picture.  This film doesn’t need to have been nominated (but may have been) and is limited to best picture.

Submissions can be in any format (premiums, steelbooks, amarays).

Let’s see what you loved!

And the Academy Award goes to… These five motion pictures that are personal favorites of mine and overshadow any cares at all about whether or not they should have won (cough:Gladiator:cough).

One film that was nominated for Best Picture and, as far as I’m concerned, should have won was L.A. Confidential. Unfortunately, it lost in favor of popular appeal and box office power in 1997 to James Cameron’s Titanic. Shame, shame, shame.

CHALLENGE 25 - "THE MULTILINGUAL PSYCHO"

Since MP can be rightly considered the leading international community for collectors of physical media, with members of different nationalities interacting (and in some cases even meeting in person) with each other on a daily basis, it is time to introduce a challenge that celebrates this wonderful diversity.

Show at least 5 editions of movies in different languages that are not in English or your native tongue.
Movies where several languages are spoken are accepted, provided only one language is chosen from each movie and it has to be used prominently throughout the film (Inglourious Basterds can be accepted as either a German or French speaking film but obviously not Italian).

HandsomeHairyAmericanmarten-size_restric

Lastly, list one or two foreign language films for which you’d like to see a Premium released.

Challenge 25

M (German)

Time Of The Gypsies (Serbo-Croatian)

City Of God (Portuguese)

Oldboy (Korean)

Kung Fu Hustle (Chinese)

Pan’s Labyrinth (Spanish)

image.thumb.jpeg.dd08571ae69351bece78fc8496639094.jpeg

Memories Of Murder - I have the extremely rare and long out-of-print digipak edition from CJ Entertainment but would replace it in a heartbeat should PA or Kimchi give us the Premium treatment this masterpiece truly deserves.

The aforementioned Time Of The Gypsies - in fact, almost any Kusturica film deserves a Premium (WCL’s announced Black Cat White Cat is one of my most anticipated releases of 2023) but this one in particular.

challenge #24

Again, a challenge, where it's impossible to decide, which ones are the best (for me at least! ;) ), so I thought: "let faith decide!"

I went to my first row of BDs and picked up the second ones, that I've found there:

1. The Untouchables - Oscar for Sean Connery!

2. The Bridge on the River Kwai - Oscar for best picture (next to many others!)

3. Whiplash - Oscar for J.K. Simmons!

4. Braveheart - Oscar for Director Mel Gibson!

5. The Fighter - Oscar for Christian Bale (next to Leonardo DiCaprio, one of the most ignored (by the Academy!) actors of our time! 😤)

And the Movie, that should have won all awards, including an Oscar for best picture - of course:

AMERICAN PSYCHO!!!

GIVE IT TO US:

THANK YOU:

@R1s1ngs0n thanks for this challenge! Even though I spent a year in South Korea, I'm not a huge fan of foreign language films, with several exceptions. But I have seen many, and do own some!

The Raid (Indonesian)

Oldboy (Korean)

Pan's Labyrinth (Spanish)

M (German)

L'avventura (Italian)

The foreign language film I'd like to see get a premium is Cronocrimenes (Time Crimes, a Spanish movie). Thanks for looking!

20230312_201139.thumb.jpg.352af98b681bac791aba067f6c7ff14e.jpg

2. Le Trou (French)

3. Operation Condor: Armour of God II (Chinese)

4. Harakiri (Japanese)

5. Once Were Warriors (Maori)
