This thread is about membership tiers. This is not where you participate in Group Buys.

I’m confused. I thought you needed a membership tier to be a part of the group buy, or rather, be guaranteed a copy of it the higher the group tier you are?

No you don't need it to participate, only goes to tier if it's a limited print run.

How do we know which are limited print runs. I'm assuming popular ones like The Dark Knight (which is the one I want lol).

With your avatar, I was expecting nothing less. lol You can still join a group buy as a regular non-tiered member, which is what you are right now. If you do get a tiered membership like gold or platinum when they become available, it does help your chances even more of securing a copy on the popular group buys. Group Buys are first come first serve except when the demand for it is high and copies become limited. Then the group buy is first come first serve by tiers with platinum first, gold is next, and then regular members like you are right now. good luck my psycho friend.
