What did you watch last night???

Based on some recommendations here, we watched Wonka . . .

Overall enjoyed it.

Timothée Chalamet was fun to watch.

The plot was a little . . . meh.

Loved the foreshadowing, Oompa songs,,Slugworth, etc. . .

My fav thing was the production . . . so great to see actual locations and sets being used for fantasy.  There was still the digital post-prod sheen on the look, but still, a great production.

Lotta Easter eggs.

But the one I thought was the best was . . .

In the beginning, Wonka is giving away his money, and he has one coin left, flips it in to the air, and it goes in the sewer drain . . . only to be found by Charlie Bucket 25 years later? . . .  did wizard Wonka put it there for Charlie to find?  Oooooooooooooh

This is awful, but I’ve only seen the Depp-Burton version, and it wasn’t for me though, typical for Burton, the production was sometimes impressive.  To be honest, it’s been a long time since I connected with any of Burton’s work.  It just feels soulless to me.

My son is halfway through the new one, seems to really enjoy it, but I haven’t really paid attention.

I have to say too that I always find myself impressed with Chalamet these days.  Before I watched him in The King (a Henry V adaptation, for those who don’t know), I thought “yeah, he’ll do fine as young, callow Hal, but there’s no way this little wisp of a lad will be convincing when he makes the turn to become King Henry”.  But I was wrong, he absolutely nailed it.  Really impressive job by any young actor, it’s a tough thing to pull off.

Enjoyed it solid watch. It's been a dream of mine to own a Donzi go fast boat. One day I'll be soaking up the sun in Florida driving my go fast boat with the company of an exceptional and wonderful spicy senorita hopefully still into physical media lol. Video I included shows what these boats are capable of.

Actually just rewatched the end of the first season, going to start the 2nd season now.  Really enjoyed the first season, have been holding off on this one until the entire 2nd season was out but couldn’t wait any longer.

And to prove how much I love Michael Mann (produced this show and directed the first episode), I just ordered a 4K Ferrari steelbook from Italy.

This show is based on a book, based on a true story.  Think I would like the book, but don’t want any spoilers.

So we finished the Tim Burton Remake of Willy Wonka, and it is definitely on the bottom of the 3. It is such a difference compared to the original. The multiple copies of the same the Oompa Loompas was kind of a let down, and the sarchasm of Johnny Depp was too over the top. Gene Wilder nailed it with have the right amount of tact with sarchasm which made it funny. Now for the Prequel, I absolutely loved it, and Chalamet's acting was right on point. So my ranking is the Original Willy Wonka, Chalamet's Wonka and lastly Burton's Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.

With this being one of my most anticipated films of the year, my expectations were high going into the movie. Long story short, Late Night with the Devil met and sometimes exceeded those expectations.

For about 10-15 years, as someone who grew up on so many horror movies thanks to my Dad being a diehard fan of the genre, I have felt most modern day horror movies have become stagnant and unoriginal. Too much focus on jump scares, gore porn, tropes, clichés, etc., and not too much focus on creativity. Hereditary, Midsommar, Get Out, The Witch, Ready or Not, A Quiet Place, and a few others I feel are shining examples of modern horror movies that really stand out from the majority of films that bathe in mediocrity. Late Night with the Devil I happily consider to be in this list, as it is a highly creative, unique and fun horror experience.

The acting really carries this movie, and brings this 70's late night show to life. You seriously feel as-if you were watching a real broadcast, and it's done flawlessly. The entire cast knocked it out of the park, and as a result creates a wonderful sense of immersion into the story and what happens. With the overall theme, I cannot express enough how well the directors nailed the 70's TV show aesthetic. The cheesy jokes, the outfits, the camera aesthetic, the zoom-ins and zoom-outs, the set design, etc. It's all masterfully crafted.

One thing to note: You will get a huge laugh at the beginning, as for some reason there are 9 studio logos back-to-back. It's a bit absurd for an indie film, but still great for a chuckle.

Late Night with the Devil is easily one of the best horror movies I have seen in years, and cannot recommend this wild ride enough.

The Tim Burton remake is the only movie in my entire life where I walked out of the theater. It's terrible in so many ways.

Experienced this for the first time last night, was so surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I mean it just has everything a stereotypical male would love, the director's first name is Rowdy for goodness sakes. Action, comedy, nudity, explosions, monster trucks—the movie goes hard.

I understand the Peter Griffin references now. Not going to bother with the Gyllenhaal remake.

This was really well done. Fascinating concept and top-notch execution. Nicolas Cage is fantastic in it.

Thanks for this . . . the algorithm has been throwing this movie in front of us daily, I sorta said no, just because, but we'll take a watch now.  Thanks Cam.

The making-of documentary is actually worthwhile.  It’s called I Thought You’d Be Bigger, used to be available on YouTube.  The amount of effort that went into the big fight with Jimmy, and the amount of real pain involved (though I know it don’t hurt) was nuts.

Vinegar Syndrome has an excellent Road House set, btw.

Thanks! I'll take a look at the documentary, love those. I've been browsing around eBay for copies of the VS release, I'm gonna need to secure that in the near future

Chill day at work so I watched some anime

Macross Plus: Two old friends/rivals find themselves rival test pilots in competing projects while a mutual old flame returns to them with her own secrets.

I'll say this one has been a long time favorite of mine since my early days of watching anime. Some entries into the franchise are better than others but this I feel is one of the better Macross projects. It can be watched in episodic form or a movie edition which is what I have on vhs. In my opinion one of if not the best dogfight scenes in Japanese animation set to a fantastic score. chef's kiss.

Ninja Scroll: A vagabond swordsman is aided by a kunoichi and a spy in battling a demonic clan of killers - led by a ghost from his past - who are bent on overthrowing the Tokugawa Shogunate.

One of the best anime films out there and still to this day one of the gold standards that set the bar high. The first animated movie I saw as a kid and boy did it shock the water out of me. I was hooked since.

“Are you alone, Mr. Gittes?”

”Isn’t everyone?”

Looked great on the big screen.  Just an almost perfect movie and it’s hard to nail down why, exactly, it’s almost like a magic trick.  Yeah, every performance being perfect is part of it, but it’s deeper than that.

The first time Faye Dunaway’s face fills the screen you think “oh yeah, that’s what a freaking movie star looks like.”

I love this movie so much. My Wife & I watched it for the first time last year, and we instantly fell in love with it.

Rewatched this last night for the third time. I love this movie so much. The documentary style of filmmaking works so well for this story. I've read some accounts that it's not all that accurate, but I still enjoy it for what it is.

I’m with you, I have to imagine this becoming a kind of classic over time.  Howerton is so watchable, great performance.

What'd you think?

I thought there would be more scenes of the actual fight but it was still pretty good. I read some reviews criticizing it saying it starts off great then gets boring. I mean it slows down in areas but not enough for me to call it boring. great music score though too
