Challenge 23

Thank you @Fortis93 for the great challenge! My favorite genre would be Mystery / Thriller’s. My favorite of all time will come as no surprise, Mulholland Dr. In my opinion it is the most beautiful film ever made. Multiple people can watch it all at the same time & almost everyone will have a different experience and different conclusions as it unfolds.

The film that changed everything for me was Blue Velvet. I saw it when I was 8 or 9 years old, & I quickly realized that there was a whole different world of Cinema out there.

MAG Das Boot

@Gary K has one, I think he's pretty pleased with it.

Just FYI, for another option.

Wow, that sure is a pretty set. Just filled out the form... let's see if I can get lucky. I'm thinking the last slot was taken about an hour ago. 🤣

Challenge #23

So many genres that I like! If I have to pick just one, I’d say Martial Arts. Oddball choice, much neglected in terms of steelbooks, let alone premiums. Indeed, it’s not even listed in the challenge.

Top 5 favorites:

1. SPL

2. Flash Point

3. Ip Man

4. The Raid (1 & 2 tie)

5.  Ong-Bak (replacing Kiss of the Dragon since I no longer have a copy)

And the movie that started it all - Fist of Fury.

Sorry I've been missing in action for the last few of these awards but as I'm generally not as big a collector as many on here I find many of the challenges beyond me & my collections so Sadly I'll have ti just pick & choose where I can get involved...sorry all :(

Anyway this weeks challenge - 23 is one I can do...YAY go me :)

So my favourite genre will probably have to be Animation/Anime as it just covers so many bases & encompasses all varieties from action to Comedy to Horror everything & no medium can touch it for what can be achieved when making them.

IMG20230302133415.thumb.jpg.9e21185ecb5ad06e0839f2b5d60a5878.jpg

So my Top 5 choices are -

1) Transformers: The Movie

Probably my favourite film of all time & one that I will never tire of watching, Still remember seeing in the cinema in 1986 & every time I watch it I am transported back to being 9 years old again & it never fails to make me smile...well all except that one part anyway ;)

2) Akira

Has to be in here, no animated movie has ever confused me as much as this one or been as influential to practically everything that has gone since

Remember the first time I saw it & I was not expecting the spectacle that I was presented with...I had no idea what I was getting into when I saw the VHS in my local comic shop...I only actually bought it at the time because I had never seen a "15" rated cartoon before & my curiosity got the better of me...so glad it did, what an amazing ride & spectacle it was.

Got me fully hooked on the Anime genre from then on & that love still continues & grows every day

3) Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
The finest animated Superhero movie period, the art style, the story all top notch & even better is seeing it in 3D...such depth to the proceedings & some fantastic effects, simply breath taking to watch & just so much fun

4) Vampire Hunter D
After Akira I got into picking up practically everything that the MANGA label put out in the UK in the mid 90's & from everything I had Vampire Hunter D still stands as one of my all time favourites, great story, beautiful animation & brilliant characters
Many people prefer the sequel: Bloodlust but for me I never got the same feeling from that as I did this movie & it's why it will be my favourite

5) Fox & the Hound
Wouldn't be a list of Animated movies without a Disney in there somewhere & Fox & the Hound is by far & away my favourite Disney movie of all time

Loved it since the moment I first saw it, the animation is beautiful, love the story & no matter how many times I see it I will NEVER not get upset when the widow goes to give up Todd :( lol

There was absolutely no way I couldn't include it in my list :)

So that's my top 5 :)

Now if we are asking what started it all?

Well I guess that it would have to be Transformers, now I know I saw other animated movies before this but nothing hit me like TF: The Movie did, from the opening arrival of Unicron to the Decepticon attack the art was just beautiful, the story engaging & characters that I've known almost all my life brought to life (& death) in ways I never expected, from getting home after the cinema I truely understood what animated movies could achieve & how amazing they could be

So there we have it that's my Week 23 challenge complete :)

Thanks for reading :)

Awards

Thanks @Fortis93!

I’ll start with the most recent challenge:

Week 23: Genre Bending

My favorite genre is Drama/Oscar Contenders.  Every year, my wife and I see all the Best Picture nominees in the theater, as well as most of the major categories.  We get excited for The Oscars and watch with friends. My top 5 are as follows:

1. Inception: this is my favorite movie of all time.  I adore the tragic love story and the mystery that the end leaves us with.

2. Raiders of the Lost Ark: Okay - technically, this is Action/Adventure.  But isn’t it much more?  It’s drama, romance, comedy - really an everything movie.  Most importantly, it’s my 2nd favorite movie of all time.  It sat a top of my favorites list for 30 years.

3. Shawshank Redemption: Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’. But make sure you watch this movie before your dyin’ days.

4. Schindler’s List: this really is a masterpiece, and Spielberg has made many - two in my top five.

5. The Hurt Locker: This movie is in my top 20, and it’s the very next Best Picture contender on my list.D591236D-4587-4211-A8CE-B49BB33C0056.thumb.jpeg.e6a1a39359e2cf69b91554daee078b09.jpeg

6. Lord of the Rings: I know this is a trilogy.  I know this is a fantasy/adventure, but at the heart of this movie, it’s a drama of the struggle of nature vs. industry, kindness vs. power, good vs. evil.  Plus it’s a bonus entry.

@extantsrevenge Here is a make up from Week 1.

It’s my favorite Lenticular edition.  It’s KimChiDVD’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  I love that the effect had Clementine fading out laying next to Joel.  It’s a genius effect.

My favorite lenticular is one that changes images.  Here are another 2:

@extantsrevenge and @R1s1ngs0n here is a make-up for Week 2 Challenge:

My favorite premium editions are as follows:

1. Manta Lab 1-Click Steelbook Fight Club: The first rule of Media Psychos is you must own this one click.  The second rule of Media Psychos is… The pink slip case resembling soap is just perfect!  It’s the best - no doubt.  It’s also quite the collectable.

2. WeeT 1-click Steelbook Antman and Wasp: The design of of this is possibly the best designed 1-click.  Love or hate the movie, it’s a great design and great shout out to the movie.

3. HDZeta 1-click Steelbook Sucker Punch: I’m not a fan of Zack Snyder, but I did like some of his early work.  I really love the look of this 1-click, and the movie is better than most give it credit.575E0ED0-9DBB-4885-B225-BC9ED18940DB.thumb.jpeg.905afd407ed37e92982a57f653574b86.jpeg

4. Steelarchive Steelbook Spring: I wish that I could say that I was an early fan of Benson and Moorhead, but I discovered them late, and I paid a bundle to buy this from someone on MP. I love having this due to how hard it is to find and that it’s by two of my favorite up and coming directors.

5. Blufans 1-click Steelbook The Dark Knight: My favorite director? Check. The best superhero movie? Check.  My favorite premium Steelbook company? Check. One of the best performances in modern cinema? Check. I love Blufans, Nolan and this movie.  Why wouldn’t it make my top 5?

Ok, the shame from missing one challenge has gone on long enough! I picked up some soundtracks so I can rectify this horrible short-coming! My missing is challenge 9, thanks @Gentleman for the challenge!

F2FCB3E9-5A4B-47B4-843B-7769388757CF.thumb.jpeg.94f8f36466916ffcc189cc02a43ecb93.jpeg

So I have Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2, and Dazed and Confused! All of these (with the exception of possibly Top Gun: Maverick at this early point) are iconic, with the most classic arguably being Dazed and Confused!
My first soundtrack was probably the score from Krull, which I no longer own due to switching all my music to digital years ago. Krull is just such an epic score, and it always takes me back to my childhood and makes me want to watch it again, even though I have seen it (no exaggeration) around 500 times! Thanks for reading!

Challenger No. 21 - "Love is in the Air"

love-is-in-the-air.gif

This week romance takes center stage in our challenge.

We want you to show us at least 5 editions with only couples or romantically involved characters on the front.

No children, no three, four or more people are allowed on the cover. Only minor additional things that don't distract from the couple shown would be okay, unless the title says Valentine's Day (then you can also include it no matter what's shown on the cover). No "Dirty movies are allowed".

All media are allowed. VHS, Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, 4k UHD and also CD (Soundtracks).

We also would like to know what your favorite romantic movie is. This movie would count towards the 5 editions needed for the challenge even if the cover shows more people than the lovely couple (but they have to be on the cover).

giphy.gif

Okay here goes!

1) Lady and the Tramp

20220904_153952.jpg.104ff77078120210a75bb045e57e7ada.jpg

Get out of there, stupid cats!

2) Wall-E

20230303_012852.thumb.jpg.1ce7d7b6626bcf41c7e24aad8569be3b.jpg

Such a lovely couple... of robots!

3) La La Land

20230303_012658.thumb.jpg.dbaaaee7b510e75c8859171dd3f883df.jpg

It's funny that this is like the third movie with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling romantically together.

4) Ant-Man and the Wasp

20230303_012522.thumb.jpg.9e4a510a559685769711b52c3fada255.jpg

Kind of a crappy couple tbh, but hey they're together.

5) Her

20220904_195643.jpg.5e31c264c53e679d0bed5f67d6f6e0c6.jpg

I'm gonna cheat and say that because Theodore is wearing that earpiece, that means Samantha is with him in the cover.

CHALLENGE 23

I don't think I have a single favorite genre, so I'll just pick one that's become very special to me more recently: anime. I didn't grow up with anime, but several years ago it became something that one of my sons and I shared together, just the two of us. It helped us through a challenging time, and I'll always be grateful for every time an anime would play for a night or two at the cinema. Here are five films I enjoy, from five different directors:

IMG_2644.thumb.jpg.52029649526d12715862fb6bcfec3dff.jpg

1. Akira (Katsuhiro Ôtomo). The first time I watched this was on the big screen, at a rerelease a couple years ago. I wasn't sure about it at first, but by the end, and contemplating all the questions it raises after the film finished, I understood why it's so beloved. Also, I think those of us who have this lenticular steelbook edition like to take any opportunity to let everyone else know that we have it. ;)

2. Weathering with You (Makoto Shinkai). I also love Your Name, but for me, Weathering with You goes even deeper.

3. Porco Rosso (Hayao Miyazaki). I also cherish Miyazaki's big, epic spectacles, of course, but I am very fond of the smaller, quirkier films he's hade—The Cat Returns, and this one, Porco Rosso, which was maybe the most surprising anime I've seen. For anyone who loves noir and war films, this is just pure delight from start to finish.

4. Belle (Mamoru Hosoda). I don't know that this is an all-time favorite, but it was pretty spectacular on the big screen. It attempts more than any single film can probably accomplish, and I admire it for that boldness.

5. Patema Inverted (Yasuhiro Yoshiura). I don't hear as much about this one, but I've watched probably as many times as I've watched any anime. Something about it really enchants me. It's a beautiful world, with constant unexpected twists and turns along the way.

The film that made me fall in love with the genre? I'll mention two. One is Spirited Away, which feels like it was a classic as soon as it was first released. Miyazaki tapped into deep wells of storytelling and mythology that cause that film to continue resonating every time I watch it. (And I am super-excited to see the film of the stage version next month!) The other is Angel's Egg, which is such a magnificent jumble of imagery and symbolism, it feels like I'm in a different world while I'm watching it.
