A challenge after my own heart, @Gentleman! How can I choose just five? I can't, so I'll share six, and there are so many more I'd love to geek out about. There was a time when I dreamed of being a film composer. In college, taking music theory and composition classes, I wrote a letter to Danny Elfman, asking if I could possibly work with him in any way. He never wrote back. Who knows what other pathway in life I missed out on because of that? ;) But I still love listening to and studying film music. Here are some that I value very highly. On any given day, any of these might be in my five favorites.

IMG_1189.thumb.jpg.555292b10881272a4e60b3820988558b.jpg

1. Vertigo, Bernard Herrmann. Why not start with the greatest? The Hitchcock/Herrmann partnership was so, so good. For me, Vertigo is the pinnacle. Herrmann's music perfectly matches the dream-like tone of the film, and it's just really great music all on its own.

IMG_1187.thumb.jpg.269de69dc128dfe65e456c2f7261d6a3.jpg

2. Three Colors, Zbigniew Preisner. The Kieslowski/Preisner partnership is another one of the all-time greats. They did a lot of excellent work together, and the Three Colors trilogy is a masterpiece.

IMG_1186.thumb.jpg.0ae7509793555949e508949ccffdaaae.jpg

3. Blade Runner 2049, Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch. I love everything Blade Runner, though it took me a couple of viewings and listenings to really get into the sequel. Nothing quite tops the original film and score, but I love what Zimmer and Wallfisch have done here. There are moments of overwhelming power and grandeur in their music.

IMG_1183.thumb.jpg.a0bf3cca1bcfb637536bc40bf28a7129.jpg

4. Rogue One, Michael Giacchino. Star Wars music has been a part of my life for almost all my years. John Williams was probably my biggest musical inspiration through my teenage years. With very limited time to work, Giacchino created some beautiful themes for Rogue One, which was, in my opinion, the best that Star Wars had ever been...until Andor (which also has an amazing soundtrack).

IMG_1185.thumb.jpg.383eee10013feff7adfe7eef6a2013f2.jpg

5. Kubo and the Two Strings, Dario Marianelli. I don't know much of Marianelli's other work, but what he created for Kubo is beautiful, epic, heartbreaking. And Regina Spektor's cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" totally rocks.

IMG_1184.thumb.jpg.2eba920df115e3b225eaad7a8b0efc21.jpg

6. Tenet, Ludwig Göransson. Yes, I'm the only person who firmly believes Tenet is one of the great films of the century so far. I can handle that. :) Göransson's score is fantastic, especially when you learn some of the details he put into it, to match the plot of the film. I have listened to this soundtrack more than any other in the past few years.

Challenge 9.

First ever Soundtrack I bought was Ghostbusters back in '84.  Main reason was I was 11 and basically played the song on repeat.

Favorite all time Soundtrack is the Singles Soundtrack.  Came out when I was in college,  just such a eclectic mix.

Current time. The Last Night in Solo is really good.  Such a great mix of artists.

I’m going to pull a @R1s1ngs0n here and submit my 5 favorite concert films, the soundtracks of which got even more play in my house over the years.

also submitting the films of the 5 soundtracks I played the most when I was younger including the first I ever bought - the soundtrack to Jonathan Demme’s masterpiece Stop Making Sense.

I realize this may not count, but what the $&@!

This is a great challenge, @Gentleman.

So lets enhance collecting a bit with soundtracks:

The first one I bought is pretty easy for me to remember. That was Blade Runner.

As well as the movie, it left a great impression. Like you, I judge a soundtrack on how it suits or even enhances a movie

and in order to be in the rank of the best, it also has to stand the test of listening to it exclusively.

If it still moves you, evokes a certain mood and stays with you, then its really a work of greatness.

It was pretty hard to choose and - with the exception of Blade Runner - I tried to find a few examples that most likely won´t be

immediate choices:

Challenge 9: "Don't stop the music". 🎹 🎶

In the Challenges so far, we've mainly focused on all kinds of editions for movies. This time we want to highlight an important aspect that can make a movie so much more memorable - the Soundtrack. Music is an integral part of any Movie experience and many of them have amazing soundtracks/scores. Sometimes the soundtrack has become even more famous or successful than the movie itself. Therefore, the upcoming challenge will also be about the music that is closely related to the movies we love.

We would like to know your 5 favorite soundtracks. Take one or more photos of 5 movies and the corresponding soundtrack. Both must be in physical format. Which format doesn't matter (Premium Edition, Steelbook, Amaray etc. for movies / CD, Vinyl etc. for soundtracks).

We would also like to know what the first soundtrack was that you bought. Please tell us something about how you came to buy this soundtrack.

We are really excited and look forward to the challenge and your posts. Have fun and let the music play! 😉

We've got a mad man here, my goodness!

Can I cheat a little and use a Tarantino greatest hits Vinyl for Death Proof?

Exceptional choices and I couldnt agree more. All of their collaborations are exquisite.

Preisner´s Requiem for my friend in honor of Kieslowski is also a magnificent listen.

Haaaaaaaa!  I was actually editing the post when you commented and then I couldn't submit my edit.

You're soooooo quick @Veum    See . . . it's called blame shifting.  :)))

- Oh forgot.  My collection is organized by publisher of the edition.

The exceptions are the big franchises: Star Wars, LOTR, James Bond, etc., those are all together.

My multi-retailer, Zavvi, Best Buy, Target exclusives are organized by . . . last one received goes at the end of the shelf.

Then, there's the inevitable re-shuffling that happens when MP Challenges come along.

Thank you so much for the new challenge @Gentleman. I'm a huge fan of soundtracks it is actually the music I hear most as you can have it running in the background when you read a Book, Comic or Manga. And for me a great score can add so much to a movie and make it really great.

There are so many soundtracks I really love to many to show, so I'm focusing on a few ob my absolute favorites.

The Soundtracks to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy from Howard Shore are simply magnificent. I hear them all the time especially the Complete Recordings CD Boxes are such an amazing release, as you get all the fantastic music from the Trilogy, a must have.

840887611_MPChallenge91.thumb.JPG.bd3b9e3e2d69555a957c190555abfbb4.JPG

John Williams is an absolute genius when it come to great music that complements the pictures on the screen to perfection. The Soundtracks to the original Star Wars Trilogy are simply legendary, I also love the prequel Trilogy Soundtracks. He made so many more great Soundtracks with Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and more Spielberg movies among others.

1861063698_MPChallenge92.thumb.JPG.f07504fdbd1218b7102c3892b19ee98f.JPG

A composer that possibly some of the younger Psychos don't know is Basil Poledouris (sadly deceased). His score for Conan The Barbarian is another of my most beloved Soundtracks, but he also did the terrific and iconic music to Robocop or Starship Troopers.

1471266030_MPChallenge93.thumb.JPG.40bcd61e5d1725ca219c387b5fc33917.JPG

The original 1989 Batman Movie and the amazing sequel Batman Returns are also so good because of the stunning music from Danny Elfman. He made lots of other good Soundtracks, but these 2 are perfection.

1127628889_MPChallenge94.thumb.JPG.43dff6e611319a2c386884e59eb1bb3c.JPG

When I was younger I always played the Game HeroQuest with my brother and friends and most of the time we had the cassette for Batman Returns running ☺️.

Another composer I admire so much is the great James Horner (unfortunately also deceased). He made so many iconic soundtracks. I simply picked the first 3 jumping at me. Aliens, Avatar & Braveheart, he made so many more great Soundtracks, like Star Trek 2, 3, Willow, Legends of the Fall and more.

1866631443_MPChallenge95.thumb.JPG.df2a2aa8fcd74569afac404a855deabe.JPG

I can't belive that I already finished showing 5 (+ a few extra 😄) and did not even have the chance to show any of Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry or Bill Conti 😲.

The first Soundtrack I ever bought was the LP for Star Wars. Now I only have CDs. I'm extremely annoyed by the companies these days, since almost no one is still releasing Soundtracks to new movies anymore, most of the stuff is only released digitally or you get low quality CD R disc releases (Warner 😨). Very sad. Thankfully companies like La La Land Records, Intrada or Varese Sarabande focus on getting new extended or Special Editions out for many classics soundtracks.

Week 9 Challenge, all of the LPs are from Mondo.

Jaws (love the LP artwork)

Big Trouble in Little China (great artwork as well but the soundtrack lacks some of the musical interludes/segments that I like the most)

B463A4B5-1D1D-4366-B086-87F896F35B8E.thumb.jpeg.8a5d4be92cc60a236187045aaeb5a2d1.jpeg

Bonus 6 entry is my favorite. Recently released and remastered Rancho Deluxe and the freakin sealed cassette tape I found at my local record store last week for $2. I love the Big Lebowski and this film definitely has early shades of it. I’m surprised more people didn’t enjoy this rerelease with how big of a cult following Big Lebowski has.

I’m not the biggest soundtrack fan honestly. A lot of the scores are more compelling with the movie/visuals and I don’t really listen to soundtracks on their own. I suppose my favorite composer would be Ennio Marriconne (sorry for the horrible spelling, and sorry John Williams) and my favorite score of his would be The Great Silence.

I wish I could say my first soundtrack was something cool like Purple Rain but it was probably Young Guns 2 cause of Bon Jovi. I honestly don’t remember my first soundtrack.

Hmm might be able to stay in this and scrape 5 together with a mix of movies and games if you fancy allowing game sound tracks?

Some are amazing such as many Final Fantasy games.  Been to see that played by orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall.

This is Media Psychos, not Movie Psychos after all 🙄

Im trying here……. 😄

Oh My God Wow GIF by The Roku Channel

I'm a little shocked to see so many comments already from people that do not have any physical soundtracks left 😲. I actually anticipated that this challenge would be harder and some might not be able to do it, but I had hoped (since we are into movies and buy multiple editions of them) that most will also have a few CD's, LP's or even a cassette of their favorite soundtracks lying around.

I mean for me music is such an important part of a movie and I listen much more to my CD's than I wantch the movies.

😱, I'm not sure how we could add showing digital soundtracks members own?

If anyone has an idea, feel free to post, and I will think about it.
