I have the same dilemma Basil has. I would be VERY interested to buy this one (OUCH) but I want art first. The price is a hit but known.

@Basil @WesternBronco  don't know the plan for this yet. I also hope it will match LotR. Best is to wait for the art to be released if you're unsure yet. I just hope they will not put us to such a shock moment like when the first art for LotR was revealed 😅

As i will not buy this and only looking the pictures the first one should be updated with a better spine color to match the artwork color. Like @Cornbuster already mentioned

The green one is great (Smaug), the grey (Five armies) is okay, and the blue with brown spine (journey) is a nogo.

I can't understand, why the have choosen the brown color. A complete mystery to me.

Aside from An Unexpected Journey needing a blue spine to match the outer colour scheme, I think these look fantastic.

I did enjoy these movies, but they're not near up to the enjoyment I derive from the LOTR trilogy. Although I would love to have this matching set for that, I'm afraid I won't be purchasing these. But the artwork is still stunning!

I am of the same opinion as Holger @Cornbuster. On 2 and 3, the spines match the front and back well in terms of color. 1 is somehow out of line and the contrast does not fit the concept of the other two to match it in color.

I definitely prefer Cornbuster's 3rd option. Blends so much better with the artwork and fits the color theme of the other 2 better as well. I'm hoping they take the feedback and update.

On An Unexpected Journey, I would swap out the brown spine for the middle option ( greenish/grey with the gold lettering). Other than that, I feel all three sets look great. The people complaining about the lack of Smaug on the front of Desolation of Smaug: I agree that Smaug should be featured, but then they would have to change the front of the other two sets, because I believe they are using the main theatrical posters, IRC.

They clearly focused on the Necromancer and Forest part with the colour design of the second movie. Smaug is on the third one, which is fine.

 

I agree that the spine of the first needs to be changed.
