Thanks @Gary Kfor this new challenge.

I've never been a fan of the Oscars. It just seemed like an excuse for a lot of sheltered and self-centred elites to pat themselves on the back for their "art".

With that said, some of my favourite films have been Best Picture winners...but these films would've still been as great and timeless as they are if they hadn't have won.

Here are five of them:

20230307_235117.thumb.jpg.3e90b175d91533bd895ab814f726c305.jpg

1. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)

2. Casablanca (1942)

3. Ben Hur (1959)

4. The Apartment (1960)

5. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

And if a vote of mine ever did count towards anything...I would've chosen American History X for Best Picture of 1998 rather than Shakespeare In Love.

Love seeing the week 24 challenge entries

Sadly this another I'll have to forgo, I don't think I have 5 films to use to enter lol

I'll have a look but I've never been big into Awards season & the majority of the films I watch are too low brow for the Academy ;)

I'll sit patiently & wait for the Week 25 challenge & hope I can get back on track then

Despite @Gary K delicate sensibilities (lol), a film that won an Oscar in ANY category will count. Many of us were just trying to keep it to the Big Four.

I'm not a fan of the Oscars either. I had to Google a list of award-winners. You might be surprised to find a few films in your collection that won awards for stuff like Sound Editing lol.

Ha ha I'll have a look at the list of winners later & see what I have, as you say if they are any category I might have something :)

Thanks

I think Raiders won 5 if you include special achievement…. Which is…. How do I put it politely….. Befuddling?

Week 24: “And The Oscar Goes To….”

Here are my 5,

1) The Godfather (Best Picture 1973)

2) Forrest Gump (Best Picture 1995)

3) Interstellar (Best Achievement in Visual Effects 2015)

4) Blade Runner 2049 (Best Achievement in Cinematography & Best Achievement in Visual Effects 2018)

5) 1917 (Best Achievement in Cinematography/ Best Achievement in Visual Effects & Best Achievement in Sound Mixing 2020)

image.thumb.jpeg.57ec1174b4b01a4edac6d615fdcf9cb5.jpeg

As for what I think should of won best picture I’d probably have to say the following,

2000: The Green Mile over American Beauty

2003: The Pianist over Chicago

2008: There Will Be Blood over No Country For Old Men

2011: This is a hard choice but I’d say it’s between Black Swan or Inception over The Kings Speech

2013: Django Unchained over Argo

2015: Whiplash over Birdman

2017: Another hard choice but I’d say it’s between Hacksaw Ridge/ Hell or High Water & Lion over Moonlight

2018: Get Out over The Shape of Water

Well the list cold be longer but one of the biggest fails in my opinion was 2014, 12 Years a Slave. I guess Her or Wolf of Wall Street were my favorites in this year, but also Dallas Buyers Club or Captain Philips were better films than the winning movie.

Lol…”delicate”. I’m many things, opinionated, outspoken, argumentative at times, occasionally pedantic and almost always curious, I’ve never been accused of being “delicate” …..until now.  So THANKS FOR THAT, lol.Stay Safe Mental Health GIF by jayjay_illustration

I didn't know if you'd explode if I submitted a film NOT in the top 4 Oscar categories lmao.

Just think of it as one more item to add to your already impressive resume! We still love you lol.

Funnily enough, I mentioned this to my wife - who knows me best - and she said “well, I wouldn’t exactly say delicate but you are at times super sensitive so they aren’t far off”.  So, you’re in good company if my wife basically agrees with you!

Thanks @Gary K for the challenge. I chose to stick to Best Picture for my selections.

Parasite (2020)

Return of the King (2004)

Forrest Gump (1995)

The Godfather II (1975)

The Godfather (1973)

My own Best Picture pick…Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon should’ve won best picture in 2001. Yes, Gladiator is a great film but Crouching Tiger is a better overall picture. Likewise, Forrest Gump was probably the THIRD best movie of 1995 behind Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction. Forrest Gump and Gladiator are both great pictures but they were both outdone in their year for Best Picture.

(I know we got a lot of Gladiator fans, don’t stone me!)

Here is my last catch up entry @extantsrevenge.

Week 22 Challenge from @Reagh

Adaptation

All of mine are entries based on comic books but with a twist.  They’re all origin stories with first appearances.

1. Spider-man (2002) - Spider-man omnibus with reprint of Amazing Fantasy 15 which is the first appearance of Spider-man.  I consider the origin and trials of Peter Parker to be one of the great stories of of the 20th century.  With great power comes great responsibility.  Peter didn’t want the power, but what he did with it is Amazing.  Peter Parker is my favorite Marvel character.  The movie is WeeT Lenticular.

2. Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (2022) - This is the movie where Marvel fans meet America Chavez.  The match which I have for it is the first appearance of America Chavez in Vengeance #1.  This particular issue is graded a CGC 9.8 Mint+ and a short printed variant.  It’s valued at about $4000 and one of my pride points of my comic collection.  The movie is the Best Buy Steelbook.

3. Logan (2017) - My 2nd favorite Marvel character is Laura Kinney, X-23.  Logan is her first movie.  It’s one of my top 5 favorite comic book movies.  The source material is NYX #3.  It’s the first appearance of Laura Kinney.  I have two copies of this issue graded as a CGC 9.8 Mint+.  These two copies are the books which I sought after the most. The movie is Manta Lab double lenticular.

Some very nice comics you have there, my friend! I remember a few of those from my comic collecting days. I did have a copy of NM #87, since Cable was one of my favorite Marvel characters. Sadly, my collection is long gone. My only wish...that your copy of Amazing Fantasy was the real deal lol.

:) if only I had six figures to spend on a comic book.

I’m very happy with my copies of NYX 3.

I also have the complete set of Civil War 1-7 Michael Turner (RIP) variants graded at CGC 9.8.  My Aspen variant is signed by Michael Turner and Stan Lee.
