Hey, @BreakBeatDJ

I have an industry related question for you.

I've been reading about Coppola struggling to get the $100 million marketing budget he wants for "Megalopolis".

Do you think a streaming service such as Apple will step in to foot the bill, or do you think he'll have to reach some compromise with a smaller distributor like Neon or A24?

@Fortis93 sorry I missed this bud.  Was going through notifications and just saw it.

My connections are on the creative/production side and not on the studio side but I certainly can give you my thoughts.

There's something odd going on here, imo.  First off, it's actually $140 mil world wide, and that is probably a realistic P&A number for this type of film these days, and not as excessive as some would say.  I'm sure there are loads of quick turnaround backend bonus's for talent: that self-funded $120 mil production budget is prob closer to $150 when all the points are paid, so that makes the $140 he's asking for even less shocking.

I'm starting to think that this whole thing is part of the marketing of the film.  Poor Francis, can't find a home for his last movie, it's so convoluted, but brilliant, daring, but can't be positioned in the market, it's "batshit".  This is marketing gold, and look how much HR, Variety, social, etc, are talking about this film.  I wouldn't be surprised if he has a handshake deal already, and this is typical Hollywood shenanigans to create buzz at Cannes, and that was the "plan" all along.   Too conspiratorial?

Certainly Neon would be willing to do it, but they and A24 probably don't have the money to push this film out, and it isn't on brand for A24, really.  Searchlight or Focus would be a good guess, but Focus is signaling they're out, I've read.  Apple?  I just can't imagine Coppola would settle for streaming only, he is part of the fabric of cinema, and he wants this thing in the theaters, and while he's not looking for an IMAX deal, he evidently had some IMAX tech consulting on production so it could be shown in IMAX.  Even if he has to pay the P&A himself, and put the studio in first position to recoup distribution, I think he'd do that before streaming only (but I really don't know).  Would he sell it?  Yikes, it's hard to believe he'd give up any control, and this is most likely what he'd have to do for a buy out.

Or the movie could just suck and no one wants it.  But, it sure is getting a lot of "free" buzz, aye?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was part of their marketing ploy, especially if it'll save them a couple of bucks.

Reminds me a bit of the buzz and articles surrounding the release of Joker.

People were worried the movie would be controversial and encourage/incite school shooters. If that was part of their marketing, it definitely worked. 😅

It still surprises me how much that movie made against its budget.

🎬 💿 Fellow film aficionados I found a good YouTuber that explains some settings changes needed if any of your 4K discs skip/freeze on your Sony X700 4K player (a really nice guy! :))! 😉

I went ahead and changed my settings to his recommendations (I did have a few 4K discs skip/freeze on me and even cleaned them but still did not help, let’s hope this settings change helps me 🙏)!! 🙏

Happy Monday All!

After long lines and standing in the Rain on Saturday, Record Store Day 2024 was a success this year. Thank you @BreakBeatDJ for trying to help me as well, you are such a good dude! Were you successful as well @MikeH5856? After RSD, hit up a local comic convention, and found some old 90s books, I need to fill holes in my collection.

Sunday was all about Volunteer work, making breakfast for over 600 people at our local church. I hope all of you have an amazing week!

NOPE! LOL Not successful at all... I was only able to get to the store about 30 minutes before they handed out their stock lists to mark what we wanted, so I was at the tail end of the line, which wrapped around the block. There must have been a few hundred people ahead of me.

The Garbage album was the only thing I wanted, but it sounded like they only got a couple of them... Oh well. Hopefully it'll get an iTunes release soon. There's no way I'll be able to miss that one! 🤣

Congrats on the comics haul, man! Funny story (not really) -- my parents were hoarders and I had a long box of comics still in their basement that I'd been searching for after dad passed away back in September (mom predeceased him about 9 years ago). But it was so freaking cluttered, I was never able to locate it. We had the estate sale last week and guess what the sellers found?! I didn't even know about it until I saw photos online of all that they were selling and I was so freaking bummed/ticked off to see all my childhood classics up for grabs. All the issues sold, which I guess is good news (more for the estate sellers pockets than mine, of course... 😡), but man, seeing all the pictures of The Punisher comics I had worked so hard on putting together entire runs of as a teenager freaking hurt. So now I'm on the search to find a complete run of The Punisher Final Days event because I really want to revisit that now. 🤣

Man that sucks to hear about your Punisher comics. oof I am feeling the frustration on that. I'm trying to stack as much of the old stuff as I can before the normies buy up what's still available for cheap as they go through their comic phase. One of the flea markets I mentioned before that I visit regularly has it's fair share of comic sellers. Mostly older guys who aren't beating you over the head in price and still charging anywhere from $1-5 per comic maybe 20 if it's a special or limited run and if you buy enough they cut you a bigger break like half off or 7 for $10 which even includes key issues or hard to find prints. It's even nicer when they recognize your face and you as a repeat customer. So they will put aside things they know you are looking for or trying to track down if you tell them. If I go to a guy around my age (mid 30's) they want $20-50 per comic even if it is a non key issue or specific run. I guess they see comics like retro video games are a good way to pull in capital.

I'm sorry to hear that. As a comic collector myself, that hurts my heart seeing they get sold that way. That 80s/90s Punisher run was so good too.

Yeah, I loved those comics back in the day. Especially Jim Lee on Punisher War Journal and the crossovers with Wolverine. Then Chuck Dixon's big 6-part opener for Punisher War Zone. I was thinking of tracking down the Epic Collections, but it looks like even most of those are now out of print... man, it's frustrating. But at least the Kindle editions are still available and half the price of the paperbacks, so I might spring for those. And I'll have both of Ennis's MAX omnibus books soon (got volume two recently, and am waiting on the reprint for volume one). I'll just have to be happy with what I do have. :)

Yeah, that was a tough one.  My local (7th in line) didn't even get one.  Then the other two stores in town, no dice.

Bummer! How did you make out with your other albums?

@nathan_s82 I was delinquent and didn't ask you how you did with RSD either! Sorry, man... I'm juggling too many plates right now.

Uh . . . It think you're the good dude @nathan_s82!

It was fun texting across country hunting for records on record store day.  Such a great vibe everywhere.  I stood by a guy who came to visit from Michigan, ended up chatting for an hour about music.    @nathan_s82 what is your experience when trying to talk about premium movie editions with the vinyl crowd.  Year after year on RSD I try to find someone, and they are oblivious, and have never heard of FAC, HDZ, even steelbooks.   I try to educate, but no one seems interested.

I got the two I wanted, which at this point in my waaaaaay too big of a record collection, is enough.   My Everybody Digs Bill Evans mono re-issue is pretty much a gem, but suffers from a little piano warble (I believe it's from 70 year old tapes stretching), but I've listened to it 4 times in the last three days.  Also, Jazz Dispensary is the only compilation series I collect.  Every year, it does not disappoint.

I couldn't help @nathan_s82 or my cousin, or another bud, that I was trying to find stuff for, but it was fun scrambling around trying to find stuff.

I was able to get Malkfunkshun, Screaming Trees and Team Sleep which on the top of my list. I got there a little later than I wanted and was still number 42 in line.

I was talking to some people in the line, and ironically they were all there for Taylor Swift. I've tried discussing premiums, and it goes on deaf ears, lol. Especially when I talk about Mediabooks, UHD, HDZeta and Manta. But it was fun to talk to the newer generation of Vinyl Collectors to see what hey are into. Ironically, I learned about some Metal Music I need to listen to.

Wow, that literally hurt to read that.  I sure hope you can find replacements, but there's nothing like the one's you held in your Cheeto's stained hands as a kid, right?

A not quite similar story for me, but with a happy ending . . . I'm also an avid Stamp collector (no, I'm not old 😆), my dad got me started when I was 5.  My first real album was a Scott Liberty in two volumes.  My sister used to go in to it and get mint stamps to send her postcards, etc.  Bummed me out.  So, when I was about 13 and had a pretty awesome/valuable collection, I went in the basement and hid it in the drop ceiling.  I climbed up on a chair, and lifted a panel, then pushed both volumes to one side to hide it from my sister.

Well, football season started, then school started, then I met a girl, and before you knew it I forgot where I put it.  Then, one day, my dad comes home and says we're moving (it was a rental so it happened quickly).  I tried to find it, but couldn't, I swear I looked everywhere, and no dice . . . and then we moved.  I was pissed off.

Years later, like when I'm 35, my mom and I were driving by our old house (we'd moved to Florida) and I said, let's stop in, I want to see if they found my stamp collection.  The people were really cool about it, I told them the story, they laughed.  I went in to the basement, and the friggin first panel I lifted up, in the back corner by a non-structural wall, I saw the edge of the blue spine of the album.  When I pushed to the side when I was 13, it had slid down a bit on the other side of the non-structural wall, so I couldn't see it when I was much shorter.

I couldn't believe it.  Just crazy, 20 years later to have that back.

So, long story to say, I'm sorry you won't get your comics back @MikeH5856 my man.  Although replacing them will be fun too, you get to relive buying them again.

I appreciate that. It just won't be the same, you know? Especially if I end up having to go the digital route with these big collected volumes... However, we have a comic convention coming to town next month, so I may see if I can swing that and check out the vendors. It'll be my first-ever comic con if so! lol

And lucky you rediscovering your stamps collection! That's fantastic!
