Although I think that it has not been named here, as of July 1st, the Psychos who live in the European Union have an additional problem for our little purchases from other territories: there will no longer be the exemption from paying VAT or customs fees for orders of less than € 22.

 

In the case of Spain, the problem is not paying VAT, 21%, but rather that the management costs for a small order are around € 19. Legally, you can pay the VAT on-line yourself, and thus you don't have to pay that 19€ management fees; but in practice this is not so easy.

 

First, because the postal service and courier companies do it in advance on your behalf -without ask permission....- and when they notify you it's already done. And you already have to pay them for having done it.

And second, because here the system to manage it yourself and pay VAT yourself is not only complex, but it does not offer you the necessary information to do so. It's made so that most are discouraged, and prefer to pay for the management.

 

This has made many people have started to place orders this month, so that they reach customs before July 1st, and avoid problems.

It's absurd that if you buy a CD of € 7 or $ 7, with 5 of shipping costs, instead of paying 12 you have to pay 33.5 (7 + 5 + VAT 21% + 19 of managing). For large purchases it may make sense, but for small purchases not.

 

It remains to be seen how it is finally implemented.

 

Good luck to you who are doing this type of shopping these days. I hope your purchases arrive at customs before the change.

@Casiusco I have never understood the European way of taxing, I think it is awful & unfair... I hope we NEVER get that kind of tax system...
