I don't know if there is something relatively similar in English (because many expressions in Portuguese we find versions used in the same exact way in English, if we translate), but we have an expression in Portuguese that I love, which is "ele/ela tá parecendo pinto no lixo" ("he/she is looking like a chick in the garbage"), to communicate that a person is very happy.
