CHALLENGE 32 - The Sticky End

Thank you @Scary Hair for this most interesting of challenges! I had to think about this one for a few days, as I pored over my collection for some titles to satisfy the criteria. I chose two for each of your categories, and they are thus....

20230509_183844.thumb.jpg.43c78f2dae50485dd2fc8ec4e7985864.jpg

Protagonists Who Met an Unwelcome End

Walter Chang (Tremors) - the affable shopkeeper was eaten alive from the bottom up by the Graboid.

Dizzy Flores (Starship Troopers) - the girl-next-door, unrequited love interest of main character Johnny just couldn't catch a break. After finally getting together (romantically and carnally), she is brutally impaled by the Bugs shortly after.

Antagonists Whose Sticky End Was Too Good For Them

El Presidente de La Hermandad (Man On Fire) - this very deserving soul was blown apart by C4 explosives inserted directly into his ass for his role in the kidnapping and presumed murder of Pita Ramos.

The Big Deadly Spider (Arachnophobia) - the creepiest of Creepy Crawlies was shot with a flaming arrow and then flung into its own egg sac where it was burned alive.

And my favorite Sticky End is, of course, Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I guess you could say he died of very rapid onset aging and then just seem to melt and waste away. At least that was how it seemed the first time I ever saw it. Used to give me nightmares for a while lol.

Challenge 32: The Sticky End, brought to us by @Scary Hair

image.thumb.jpeg.c5dbd1b19b3dc3e9e0a347885c1c7e7a.jpeg

1. Total Recall -- Vilos Cohaagen meets an absolutely wonderful sticky end after being blown out onto the surface of Mars and is subjected to the vaccuum of space, prompting his optical nerves to freeze into bloody stalks as his eyeballs are sucked out of his head. It's sick! (In the best ways, of course.)

2. John Wick -- hot damn, a whole lot of people meet their justifiably sticky ends at the end of uber-assassin John Wick's plethora of guns.

3. Evil Dead (2013) -- this might be the stickiest freaking movie of my collection and it practically bleeds red corn syrup. Mia squares off against the Abomination while the sky rains blood, and limbs get chopped off so they spray even more blood everywhere. I even some sympathy pains watching Mia forced into amputating her own hand in the grand finale. Sticky stuff, indeed.

But for me, The Ultimate Sticky End has a nice bit of childhood nostalgia with it. What's better than watching Nazi's get their faces melted off in some awesome, horrific, goopy fashion? Not much, I'd say, which is why Raiders of the Lost Ark is a standout for me!

By far, one of my most favorite creepy crawly movies! There have been a ton of knock-offs, but none near as good as the OG Arachnophobia. Took me forever to find a physical copy, too lol.

My wife is part of the Disney Movie Club so we can get some movies for the kids. She ended up with a bunch of points to redeem and she asked if I wanted anything. Arachnophobia and The Rocketeer were my picks, but I haven't watched either of them in the few years we've had them... 🤣

Challenge 32 - Sticky End

Great challenge @Scary Hair! Thanks so much.

My Selections.

1.  Friday The 13th - the final decapitation of Momma Vorhees.
2. Mandy - Red finally exacting revenge on Jeremiah Sand by giving him an eyeful.
3. Slither - the whole movie is super sticky and goopy and Grant’s final demise is a masterpiece of goopy stickiness.
4. Drag Me To Hell - our protagonist fulfills the title of the film in the very last frames.   Just brutal.
5. Scanners - not the infamous head explosion, but the final confrontation between Revok and Vale.  One of them died.  But who?

my favorite though is definitely Friday The 13th (and the most amazing jump scare at the very end)

CHALLENGE 33: INTERMISSION

Seth Meyers Lol GIF by Late Night with Seth Meyers

Settle in and get ready for the long haul. This week's challenge is all about the movies that keep us sitting still for a looong time. For this challenge, show us five movies (any format) that are each at least three hours long.

As an optional extra feature (as if this challenge weren't already long enough), tell us about a time you left a movie to use the bathroom or grab a snack, and when you returned you found that you'd missed something really important.

Challenge #32: The Sticky End. Thanks to @Scary Hairfor this tough challenge!

z9nCsLh.jpeg

1. The Godfather: Don Vito Corleone. Sad when he went. Fitting that he died playing with his grand kid as he was a family man.

2. Scarface: Tony Montana. For a fleeting moment I thought he would make it out alive, but too much coke and bullets.

3. Goodfellas: Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci). He was a terrible guy, but when I first saw this as a teen, I didn't expect him to get popped the way he did.

4. Casino: Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci). An even worse death than the character he played in Goodfellas, I can't think of a more scary way to go.

5. 300: Leonidas. It really made me sad to see him die, even though I knew it was coming.

q73rfRv.jpeg

Ultimate Sticky: Avengers Endgame: Tony Stark. Only the second time I've cried during a movie death, (the other being Apollo Creed when I was 8). The whole sequence of events is a teer jerker.

Thank you @ethnosax for our longest Challenge 😄. Don't forget to share your own selection 😉

I decided to go without LotR, Godfather 2, Titanic or Endgame as I figure they will show up anyway, so I have selected:

1965 Doctor Zhivago (UK Steelbook) 3 hours 17 Minutes

1939 Gone with the Wind (UK Steelbook) 3 hours 58 Minutes

1962 Lawrence of Arabia (German 4K Steelbook) 3 hours 38 Minutes

1954 Seven Samurai (UK Steelbook) 3 hours 27 Minutes

1978 The Deer Hunter (UK 4K Steelbook) 3 hours 3 Minutes

1990 Dances with Wolves (US Steelbook) 3 hours 1 Minute or Extended with 3 hours 56 Minutes 😍

2009 Watchmen Ultimate Cut (UK 4K Steelbook) 3 hours 35 Minutes

2022 Babylon (German 4K Steelbook) 3 hours 9 Minutes

Challenge33.thumb.JPG.b00fbfe907de371b53fcacfb6f171297.JPG

I really like a long movie if the story is good enough and you nknow it is when you don't look at the clock during watching.

As for your bonus question, I have actually never left a movie in the cinema and at home you can pause the film, which I rarely do. I did however fell asleep during Die Hard with a Vengeance when I watched it in 95 in Cinema. I went with a few friends and we just returned from a class trip, so everyone was super tired, I was surprised about a few parts when I saw it the 2nd time at home years later 😅.

CHALLENGE 33: INTERMISSION

IMG_3355.thumb.jpg.7706ad49912c6c4ff9111b5846b3eb4b.jpg

1. The Green Mile (3 hrs., 9 mins.)

2. Seven Samurai (3 hrs., 27 mins.)

3. A Brighter Summer Day (3 hrs., 57 mins.)

4. The Ten Commandments (3 hrs., 40 mins.)

5. Lawrence of Arabia (3 hrs., 38 mins.)

I don't usually leave a movie once it's started, but I remember the first time I watched Isle of Dogs in the theater, I had to leave for a bathroom break, and I missed the scene where Atari and Spots first meet, which really sets up a lot of the movie. I still loved it, but my family had to explain that I'd missed a key moment. (I've now watched that movie countless more times.)

Thanks @Scary Hair for the challenge

1. THE OUTSIDERS - Let's do it for Johnny

2. CITIZEN KANE - With every success and broken relationship, Charles Foster Kane inches toward his own hollow death

3. AMADEUS - Wolfy in a pauper's grave, covered in quicklime, while the choir sings the Lacrimosa

image.thumb.jpeg.cb30524f789188aa75139db57db7b78f.jpeg

HONORABLE MENTION - the least sticky ending in history : Oh My God, They Killed Kenny!!

I remember the first time I saw Kenny McCormick die, I couldn't believe it.  After 5 years and over a 125 gruesome deaths, the little guy in the parka was finally gone . . . wait . . .  is he?

When they killed him at the end of season 5, "for good" it was so heartbreaking.  Ironically all the previous 125 deaths had numbed you to the fact that anything bad could ever really happen to the muffled mouth fella, right?  If death can't stop him, nothing can.  But man, this episode, where the boys say "bye" to him, was truly unique for any death of any character in any story.  You didn't know if he was coming back or not, you hoped, but you didn't know.  It was a weird space to be in:  I can't own my sadness for the boys because I don't know if it's real, but it feels real, but is it real?  A truly unsticky stickiest of endings.  In the last episode of season 5 and then through season 6, you had heartbreak every episode Kenny didn't show up to do his duty . . . to be killed.   His spirit inhabited Rob Schneider and other characters, but still . . . no Kenny.  Truly missed the little bro, and so did the boys.

If you watched season 6, you know the rest.  Merry Xmas Kenny.

Never Walked out of a movie.  Came close of The Two Jake's back in the early 90's.  Just did not appeal to me.  I'd i was by myself,  probably would have just gone.

I did leave without finishing The Disenguished Gentleman.  2nd run theater and the print broke and they couldn't fix.
