Did some irresponsible late-night ordering last night, but I think it was worth it. Picked up a bunch of Criterion titles. Most of these were inspired by @Nadam's "Movies That Stay With You" thread, which I think many of us really enjoyed engaging with yesterday.

I've never seen any of these, and I'm ready to experience some great films. Thanks @Nadam for starting the thread and suggesting Ikiru. Thanks @BreakBeatDJ for suggesting The 400 Blows. Thanks @R1s1ngs0n for suggesting 12 Angry Men. I've also got WKW's In the Mood For Love arriving tomorrow, which was on @Casiusco's list, and The Seventh Seal, which I really should've seen by now anyway.

@LeadFarmer I'm going to rewatch Event Horizon this week (which I already own), and @Veum & @Gary K, I've... never seen The Godfather films, which pains me to admit. I've already got that 4K trilogy though, so I'm finally going to give it a spin.

It makes me so happy that you and others enjoyed that thread. To be honest, it put a huge smile on my face seeing the amazing movies that you and everyone suggested. I cannot wait to hear about your experience with Ikiru! You MUST let me know once you have finished watching it. That movie is a powerful reality check about taking more time to enjoy life. I watched it for my first time 2-3 years back, and it still remains in my thoughts on an almost daily basis (I had multiple Cancer scares at that time, so this movie really hit me hard). It is one of the main reasons I stopped making YouTube content, as with my scares, I realized I was spending more time working than enjoying life, and this movie opened my eyes so much. It's one of Spielberg's favorite films, and same with Patton Oswald (there is an interview with Oswald talking about how Ikiru, After Life [1998] and Groundhog Day being the "I need to re-think my life right now" films). I am so excited that you get to experience this masterpiece!!

I still need to pick up "The 400 Blows" and watch it for the first time. I have heard so many amazing things, but never saw it. I just put in an order for Kor-eda's "Still Walking", so I will need to snag 400 Blows as well, haha.

Here is Patton Oswald discussing Ikiru:

The first step to recovery is admitting I have a problem 😆

This . . . may actually be a good thing.  I first saw it as a kid, had less context for it obviously, it became foundational.  Getting to see it and analyze it for the first time as an adult who has seen a lot of movies, I actually envy you.  Seeing it now, you will probably have already seen a ton of movies that it influenced and I wonder how that will affect your interaction with it.   I do envy you, getting to see that for the first time.

I assume that this particular group, looking at how often it has come up, knows that Event Horizon is available for preorder on 4K?

Yeah but I already have this one (the one for pre-order is a reprint 😉), however I need to put it in my “to watch pile”… I’ll watch it when my AcornTV subscription runs out this coming Monday (got to catch up on a few TV series’ on there 😑)! 🙌

Not yet! Going to check it out soon though. Wanted to make sure I had the Criterion Fire Walk With Me at the ready for when I get there

Was thinking about how a person might receive that movie if they hadn’t seen the series.  Also wonder how that series plays today to someone seeing it for the first time.

Not sure how old you are, but my niece was staying at our house a few years ago, she was 14 or 15, and I put it on.  The show sometimes plays with soap opera and 50s Americans tropes and I thought that stuff was probably flying right by her.  Soap operas have been practically obsolete and, via the pop culture of the time I got a good dose of 50s iconography growing up in the 80s, but people growing up in the last few decades are probably less familiar.

I feel like the show would still work, just maybe be a little less resonant.  Lynch did a great job, for Lynch (who sometimes is working in time periods that seem divorced from the real world), of making Twin Peaks: The Return feel modern, in my opinion.

Sorry, love that show and Lynch, have probably spent too much time thinking about this stuff :)

I'm 32. Regarding Twin Peaks, I expect to end up liking it; so far I haven't encountered any David Lynch films that I haven't liked! But I'll report back when I finally start it, I'm really looking forward to it.

I'll definitely report back, Nadam! What a story though, I'm glad you're still with us, that sounds like a harrowing and traumatic experience. I hope you are in good health these days.

Sadly, you are not the only person I know of who hasn't seen it. If you have never seen the Godfather trilogy you are in for a treat. The first two movies, along with Pulp Fiction, are my three favorite movies of all time.

@hansreinhardt Everyone has to start somewhere! In my opinion, and I know I'll get blasted for this, although the Godfather movies are excellent, and absolute classics, they are a bit overrated. I like Goodfellas better, and Casino is right on the same level. If you enjoy heist movies (I understand those are gangster movies and not heist movies), I'd also recommend Heat, which I consider an almost perfect film!

I haven't commented on the movies that stay with you thread (been very busy at work) but my top choice for that would be Requiem for a Dream (my second favorite movie ever). Anyways, enjoy checking out all these new (to you) awesome gems! And please also check out Seven Samurai, if you haven't already!

Last 2 weeks. Man of Steel from our GB, thanks @sobmaster for the secure shipping 🙏. Great Box for the German Monster Steelbooks and 2 regular Steelbooks, both very nice.

A real shame that MoS has ugly J-Cards on the back, that said I personally think it is the weakest WeET Exclusive, not such a promising start for them making DC. I guess Warner is mostly to blame with all the restrictions they have 😥

I'm going to rewatch Event Horizon this week

Event Horizon is the only film I've ever walked out off in the middle.  A movie about a ship that goes to hell and comes back.  Hmmmmm.

Is there some onomastic piggybacking going on : Paul W. S. Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson?  :)  Maybe my career would be going better if I changed my name to Stephen Z. Spielberger.

I know people love this movie, and that's cool.  Sam Neill is fantastic to watch, for sure.  But, @hansreinhardt curious to see what you think on rewatch.

I can agree that Goodfellas is great, my favorite Scorsese movie, but did you just say the Godfather movies were overrated... and Casino is on the same level as Goodfellas ...

It’s not a perfect movie by any means, but I enjoy it. I think the long lost extended cut would solve a lot of pacing issues, apparently the footage has been lost but hopefully it’ll turn up one day. Trimmed to the bone, there’s not enough time to ponder what’s going on, it’s too “go go go”

Goodfellas is one of my favorites! By contrast I have started Godfather three times, but never made it through to the end.

I was completely unfamiliar with Journey to Space, just looked it up on IMDb.  Looks like something that would be cool to have in 4K.

Reminds me:  I have the Criterion blu of For All Mankind (not the show, the movie that pieces together a trip to the moon), have been skeptical that the 4K would be much of an upgrade considering the age of the source material.  Suspected that the blu ray had already maxed out the source material.  Anyone seen it in 4K?
