No I’m not talking about insulting anyone in the streets, a comedy club type setting is not the streets and you know what you are getting when you go in… it’s all in FUN not to be taken seriously at all! ;)

I agree with @Veum Will smith has lost the plot he began by laughing at Chris rocks joke originally then saw his wife's reaction. He also can't take a joke yet he's ok with other blokes sleeping with his wife makes sense.

He should have been chucked out when it happend yet he was allowed to stay and then applauded when won a Oscar no wonder Chris rock didn't press charges.

One other thing that I find intriguing regarding this incident is the fact that Smith chose to slap Rock rather than punch him in the face.

it's perfectly possible he was debating what punishment to inflict on Rock while he was approaching the stage and finally decided to go for the bitch slap.

hmmm-thinking.gif

Could be several reasons for that:

1. More humiliating.

2. A punch would have caused visible damage to Rock, effectively ending his hosting/roasting duties for that evening.

3. Almost certain ban from attending future Oscar events as well as prosecution from Rock.

Are you telling me that a prestigious award ceremony is a Comedy club setting? 😁 I’m not buying that one Mike. Think this particular swipe wasn’t in the dress rehearsal (something else that comedy clubs don’t have).

Its all good though. Each to their own and all that. I’m just saying people shouldn’t be offended or up in arms that a Man made a stand to protect his family after being publicly insulted.

You know also Chris Rock told his friends that he did not know Jada had alopecia, then what was wrong with the shaved head joke for GI Jane 2… it was just a funny saying her head was already shaved for the next movie 😂

There was no maliciousness done on Chris’s part at all! 🤷‍♂️

@damships @Veum I’ve never understood the American “Roast” comedy. As an Englishman I personally think it is just straight up cringy and offensive. I don’t see it is as clever in anyway. Can’t say I blame Mr. Smith after having his family targeted for years by Mr. Rock (and others) and for what? So that he can get a public laugh at someone else’s expense? He couldn’t pick a more public place to insult someone.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not fussed either way as it makes no difference to my life, so I’m not riled in any way. I just don’t think it’s right to target people like that, especially when it’s medical related. There’s being funny, and then there’s just being a Co*k. He’s lucky Will had the foresight to only make it a slap IMO. 🤷🏼‍♂️😁

I think it's as @Veum stated. It may be a cultural thing. But a "roast" to us means, in an odd and peculiar way, that you have enough rapport and respect for the person that you're fine with them just talking crap to you. You can't just help laugh at yourself.

As for just random comedians doing it (again, in a peculiar way), it's almost like a shout out. I'm sure Chris Rock has nothing but respect for Jada and Will. But that respect means he can still talk crap and shout out to them all at the same time. This was a bit sensitive though due to her medical condition. But when you're a public figure, you have to be open to that happening. I've seen so many roasts on Comedy Central where things that were said were much, much "worse", but everyone still laughs at the end of the day.

It's really about the beauty about being able to make fun of one another and still maintain love and respect for one another. That's the essence of roasting. It's an odd dichotomy or paradox, but that's how we see it lol. I can see how others can view it differently though! No one is wrong. Definitely subjective.

I think roasting can be very funny but it takes a special kind of performer to pull it off without ruffling any feathers.

Here is a prime example by the man who turned roasting into an art form. Most of the 'victims' were Rickles' personal friends but he was always careful no to cross any lines and every roasting ended with Rickles expressing his affection and admiration for the 'roastee'.

No cuss words or cheap shots, just pure class and always very funny. Rock's performance had neither of these attributes.

I miss this guy.

You're right. He was THE King of Roasting.

I remember them showing this footage from behind the scenes of "Casino" where he's giving De Niro a hard time for forgetting his line. 😄

as everyone one about smith im with @Pbsw23 you cant make jokes about peoples medical conditions, what becomes next wheelchair jokes for the disabled?

no its not on and @waxenol is right these jokes have been going on for years at both of them from rock.

my question is this can rock not be funny without say you got this medical problem is he that untalented ?

how smith reacted was completely unwarranted, he could simply shouted out that rock was out of order and pointed out that poking fun at someones medical condition is his best comedy, i would have ripped it out of rock to the point of embasement for rock cringe worthy.

also you have the point this is supposed to be a film award ceremony and not a rip it out of the guests each and every time, keep doing that you have not guests.

there is a line that has been well and truly crossed by rock and if oscars have any sense they will ditch all "comedians" and save all this mess that it is.

is not entertainment anymore it becomes simple abuse.

@Basil you still are not getting it, Chris said privately to his friends that he was not talking about Jada’s medical condition, he was mentioning the movie GI Jane with their military haircuts, so she was ready for GI Jane 2!

Chris certainly did not deserve the treatment smith gave him!!

Let's agree to differ on this one

You got your  view fair enough and I have mine.

We don't always have to agree

I only agree smith should not behaved like he did.
