The Criterion Collection

Citizen Kane just got dethroned as the worst digipak Criterion has ever done. The GITD effect doesn't make this awful packaging any better.

What's the point of releasing a 4K disc if it comes in such flimsy and cheap packaging? Why can't they stick with the true and tested scanavo cases which are not only sturdy, but also look better on the shelf. I'll be getting the bluray only edition as it most likely comes in one of those, based on past releases.

Yes! Couldn't agree more. Scanavo cases are so much nicer. Citizen Kane drives me nuts, it sticks out on the shelf like a sore thumb. This Trainspotting edition looks like it won't stand the tests of time very well...

It just drives me nuts. This guy received his edition directly from Criterion and it already has creases on the edges.

Luckily I'm not one to insist that every movie in my collection needs to include 4K, otherwise I'd be even more aggravated by such incomprehensible marketing decisions.

But the 4Ks rule if done correctly❣️

I agree! But sometimes I think 4K discs are simply gravy, not the meat and potatoes. Especially when a BD is sourced from the same transfer as the 4K.

Of course that is right… as long as it is not just an 4K upscale of said movie! 😉

The real problem we have with this “controversy” is that it focuses solely on resolution. Yes, there is, objectively, a difference between an Ultra HD Blu-ray movie that was upscaled to 4k versus one that was 4k native. But there is more to the Ultra HD Blu-ray release than just the resolution of the image. The color gets re-graded which allows for more colors than you can realize on a traditional Blu-ray release. HDR is incorporated for a more realistic image. Sometimes, object-based audio is walled off behind the Ultra HD Blu-ray release (even though it doesn’t have to be). There are a lot of benefits to the UHD movie release that you won’t find on the other versions (streaming, Blu-ray, DVD). Crying foul over pixels seems a bit short-sighted.
