Hi Guys,

I am a complete noob when it comes to Anime, and @extantsrevenge has pointed me in this direction 😁

I am in for Akira, I am watching Voltron series on Netflix, and I have long been aware I need to look up Gundam.

My main entertainment interests are Marvel, Monster Movies, Sci-Fi  & Fantasy, so my fellow Psychos, Any anime suggestions that you may have and think I would like? (& where to find them, or best editions to hunt for).

Cheers!

Anime fans @Grendel @Terje Iversen @KingRagnar @Hatori @DarthEd and others get in here ☺️

I already recommended some stuff here, but let me add a little @Pbsw23 ☺️.

As for Gundam, I would try to see the Original series, or if you want to start with something shorter the 8th MS Team Series is absolutely amazing, that is one of the best (I'm currently rewatching myself on Blu-ray 😍). From the different timelines I think Gundam 00 and Gundam Wing are the best.

As for Fantasy, the original Record of Lodoss War is a must see. Also 12 Kingdoms or Scrapped Princess are terrific. But here you have to check out the Ghibli Movies Nausicaä, Princess Mononoke and others. Check out the original Berserk Anime that has Fantasy and Monsters, Claymore would be a series that has also both elements and is simply amazing.

I have to stop now, otherwise you will be overwelmed and Ialso want to hear what others members have to say 👍

Ooo welcome! :D @Pbsw23 Anime is one of those things that can be so varied by genre! There are all kinds of series! My wife was the one that actually got me into anime, she kinda “smoothed” me in with some of the more popular series. We started off watching Attack on Titan, Tokyo Ghoul and some of the really popular series! One of our favorites right now is Rising of the Shield Hero. I would highly recommend a subscription to VRV, it’s $10 a month and has a TON of series. If you like mech series I highly recommend Darling in the Franxx. My Hero academia is extremely popular right now as well.

Awards

Welcome @Pbsw23 to the Red headed Step-child of the Forum community! 🙂

Hmm, ya leave the door open pretty wide as for your "likes" but let's see what we can do;

Fantasy:

Well, ya gotta start with the staples;

- Berserk (NOT, repeat, NOT the 2017/18 version!!!)

- Hellsing Ultimate

- Vampire Hunter D

- 12 Kingdoms

- Record of Lodoss War

Then break in some new titles;

- Made In Abyss

- Attack On Titan

- Overlord

that should get you started. 🙂

As for Sci-Fi:

Again, do your homework;

- Akira (be aware, a new release by Kimchi is in the works!)

- Ghost In The Shell

- Cowboy Bebop

- Outlaw Star

- Evangelion

As for new titles, well, most of them suck...😉

For just "monsters", well my fantasy listing has them but I guess if you mean human monsters;

- Elfen lied (new Steel coming!)

- Tokyo Ghoul

- Parasite

- Saga of Tanya The Evil

I think that will keep ya busy this year my friend.

As for purchasing, you have a few out of the way choices besides Amazon;

- Right Stuf: (USA)  https://www.rightstufanime.com/

- Tokyo Otaku Mode (TOM): (USA)  https://otakumode.com/shop

- All The Anime (AtA): (Englandhttps://www.alltheanime.com/collections/

Membership in some of these also has its' perks wrt % off or advanced sales notices. Not too pricey for membership either.

Best of fortune to you my friend!

🤗

^^ Also, @Pbsw23, be aware that Anime is unfortunately, not cheap and sometimes the prices are a bit nuts.

I tried to steer away from some of the pricier titles (i.e. Space Battleship Yamato and Fullmetal Alchemist as you will soon discover there are "good" releases (i.e. Aniplex, Manga) and "not as good" releases (i.e. Funimation). Mind, Funi also has the largest catalogue, so what ya gonna do? Not buy it?

Not a worry, that's more from a purist sentiment (cough, @extantsrevenge, cough cough 🤡).

Cheers!

I have not heard about the subtitle issue, was it for a new release?

From the multiple releases I own I only have opened 1 to watch, which is the 2009 Blu-ray with both the original and 2.0 version. Wich was okay. In japan they have already released the movie on 4K and from what I understand it is the best presentation, the Blu-ray included on that is also remastered. I'm still thinking about getting that, but it is expansive like all japanese products.

Hi There my friend and welcome warmly to the Anime sub-forum!

Your question is actually a bit tricky in fact, as an answer depends on the following;

- what country (Region) are you able to play?

- what can your wallet afford"

- how deep down the rabbit hole are you prepared to fall?

As a stand-alone, basic, reasonably priced NA version, I'd suggest you purchase the Anchor Bay 25th anniv Blu. (only $10usd!). Region A.

Link (amz.com)

https://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Shell-25th-Anniversary-Blu-ray/dp/B00L6AW2MC/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=ghost+in+the+shell+anime&qid=1561875190&refinements=p_n_format_browse-bin%3A2650305011&rnid=2650303011&s=movies-tv&sr=1-1

From there you can get determine if you want to pursue the series further with the sequels and spin-offs, such as;

-GitS: Stand Alone Complex

- GitS: Arise

- GitS 2: Innocence

- Gits: New Movie

If you are in Europe, perhaps this combo pack would suit your needs; Region B.

- Gits 1 & 2 Blu (Manga) = 10 quid.

Link: (amz.uk)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ghost-Shell-Movie-Double-Pack/dp/B01N2IQAWQ/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=Ghost+in+the+shell&qid=1561875547&refinements=p_n_binding_browse-bin%3A383380011&rnid=383379011&s=dvd&sr=1-2

I'm hesitant to recommend the pricier versions (i.e. S. Korea, region A) until you determine your fondness for the films. 🙂

All the best to ya buddy and please continue to cruise this sub-forum!

Cheers!

Good Afternoon @aj101097 .

I think I should explain something wrt my GitS recommendations before you truly wish to hate me;

The Anchor Bay Blu release is the one with issues you mentioned but perhaps you can digest them without too much concern.

- The PICTURE quality I would suggest is top-tier.

- The English dub I suggest is very good

- The English SUBS however leave a lot to be desired as I think the translation was c/o by the a studio member's son still in first year English class.

A LOT of mistakes.

Now, the sound quality and as I mentioned, the Eng Dub, are both really good and I'd suggest watching it with those selected.

For a more purist viewing, it's gonna cost more, as I would need to recommend either the Japanese or South Korean release.

So, for 10 bucks, I'd say it a good watch.

Please send all death threats via PM, as I don't want the thread to get cluttered.

😀

@Veum since the other thread is more for showing collections, I would continue here.

In addition to @Grendel's great list I would add a few more.

You can never really go wrong with Studio Ghibli they are like the Disney of Anime...especially Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Also the works of Makoto Shinkai like Garden of Words, Your Name and Weathering with you.

If you like a little psychological with supernatural elements I would suggest Death Note.

For fantasy with a lot of women go for Claymore. For more classical fantasy which plays out like a pen and paper RPG, watch Goblin Slayer.

Also a bit more on the brutal side would be Deadman Wonderland.

Also the Garden of Sinners movies a visually stunning and a little crime but more supernatural/fantasy orientated.

Oh man if you want to go full p*rn there are a lot of hentais (genre of anime p*rn basically) but I don't know any titles for them 😂

But there is one I remember which is something about people getting powers through...breastfeeding...well yeah...title is The Qwaser of Stigmata.

Vampire animes as mentionend above Hellsing Ultimate, Vampire Hunter D and also Blood - The last vampire, Bakemonogatari (which might be a bit too weird for you...or anyone really but there are girls with big boobs so there's that), Shiki and Vampire Knight (though this is more aimed at teenage girls think Twilight-esque).

Some great recommendations you've put forth @Trianna...🙂

Mind, before you get confused @Veum, Trianna was referring to Vampire Knight as the Twilight-esque show, NOT Shiki.

Shiki is a mind trip as well as a very unsettling Vamp flik and is a rough watch for the un-initiated (not a go-to for boob and panty shots either, heh).

Absolutely fantastic though and relatively inexpensive right now if I recall.

I did enjoy Vampire Knight as well though.

My Dear @Veum ;

As @Trianna mentioned, there are a LOT of anime with solicitations of sexual innuendo, mostly in the form of boob and panty shots.

AS for listing ones with a relatively decent story-line included, I'd suggest;

- High School DXD (many seasons)

- High School of the Dead

- To Love Ru (many seasons)

- Testament of Sister New Devil (S-1 & S-2)

many others

Also, I'm not being snide but if you go to PornHub, and type in Hentai, you would be AMAZED at what has been produced!

Hentai, which essentially means "pervert" in Japanese usually is pretty tame sex scenes but they can get bizarre (it's linked to tentacle porn for a reason, heh).

It's also pretty amazing that PornHub has a number of anime shows IN FULL that can be viewed but this requires a membership in some cases and I have no interest in that.

There are some shows you can watch without though, i.e. Shiny Days, which is fully uploaded and sexy as hell without going over the line into the bizarre.

Anyway buddy, with all the info we've deluged you with as of late, and all the pics we've provided in these many threads, I'm sure you'll get a handle on things.

And, always, ask, questions!

Cheers my friend!  🙂

I’ve got a few anime, however I’ve not pulled the switch as of yet to invest into a lot of anime... maybe here soon I will!🤔

Finally got around to watching GANTZ-O this morning and dya know what.... I’d love to see a Premium release for that. Very visually entertaining with tonnes of monsters/beasts. Right up my street.

@Pbsw23,

What is it about & is it worth a blind-buy from a somewhat “newbie”?🤔

Its on Netflix buddy. I did a quick google search to see what formats are available to buy, but didn’t find much.

You never actually get an explanation as to what has “Happened”, but it’s about a group of random civilians who die, but wake up in a room and form a Monster Killing Team. Bizarrely they are now in a Game, but the game is taking place in the real world?! 🤔 Never seen anything like it before so quite original (In my Newbie opinion 😁).

But if you like Monsters, Sci-fi shoot em ups and some gore, then I’d recommend adding it to your “to watch” list. 😁👍🏼

 Unfortunately we do not have Netflix (do not plan on getting it b/c we have AMZ Prime vid & spending money for it right now would not be economically wise for us😉), so I’d have to see this much later, Ce Le Vie (I’m glad you enjoyed it!👊).

@LeGonze Maaaaaaaaaate…. I just sat down, cracked a beer open, switched on Netflix with the FULL intention of starting AOT and…… It’s GONE! 😫😭😭😭😤

So for my sins, I have randomly decided to start Pacific Rim: The Black. Only 2 episodes in but seems decent enough.

Struggle to find the time to properly enjoy much watching at the moment, and have a stack of movies to get through, but I certainly plan on trying to watch AOT, Goblin Slayer & Ajin sometime soon.

Wow can't believe they took it off. What type of anime you looking to watch? There's a couple fighting ones I really enjoyed was kegan ashura and baki. I watched record of ragnarok couple weeks ago really enjoyed that it's about God and humans fighting. The humans are trying to stop the gods from wiping us out first fight in that is thor vs some crazy person only 12 episodes at the minute.
