Absolutely! Long live the new flesh! Great movie, great transfer. I’m pretty much a Cronenberg fanboy, and I think this is his best work.

Multi Retailer The Abyss (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital) [USA]
Heywoodmoutaw replied to Gary K's topic in 4K
Put in The Abyss last night for 15 minutes or so while I was cleaning up around the house, just looking up here and there to check out the transfer. I thought it looked great; very clean for a movie from that era but not too much so. I’m not hearing good things about Aliens or, especially, True Lies. Will know firsthand pretty soon on Aliens (skipping True Lies for now; was better than I expected at the time but I didn’t love it). Edit: fixed a grammatical screwup. -
Speaking of shame . . . I’ve never seen the original. So many people say good things that I considered pulling the trigger on a 4K preorder anyway, but I haven’t done it yet.

I thought it was excellent. Saw it in the theater and loved it enough look up the name of the person behind it (Alex Garland) and make sure I followed his work. I’ve really enjoyed everything he did other than Men. Devs had kind of a weak lead, but the story was so good that it didn’t matter, to me anyway. I thought Annihilation was very good as well. But Ex Machina is still my favorite work of his. I think it’s Oscar Isaac’s most impressive performance, and Vikander and Gleeson are both superb as well.

This and That (Where Great Conversations Are Happening)

Have any of you guys seen this and, if so, thoughts? I like the look of the Second Sight set, but I haven’t heard anything about the movie from anyone that I know. -
Same. I’ve had this one bookmarked on Kanopy for probably a year, but I want to watch it, if not in one sitting then at least in one day with small breaks. Unfortunately I have few days off work; when I have them I’m usually doing something with Heywood Jr. Really want to watch it, I love a slow paced, deliberate film when I have time to soak in it, like a nice warm bath.

I can’t believe he already has another one out so quickly after Poor Things. A lot of the cast is in both movies, they must have filmed almost simultaneously.

I have to admit, I’m pleased that these are selling so well that they’re having trouble meeting orders. Hopefully tells them there’s enough demand to justify releasing lots of older titles on physical media, and support the upgrades to 4K. -

Man, I am no good at picking movies for you. Sorry about that. -

At the beginning of the day I’m Lynch, by the end of the day I’m the thing behind the dumpster. -

1200? Can’t believe it’s happening, but the English speaking world has finally been overwhelmed by the Germans. -
Well, it is what it’s reputation says it is and it’s always as satisfying as I remember it being. When I was a kid, I thought old movies were cheesy and kind of simple minded. Now, especially compared to what we normally get now, the characters in the great movies like this one seem so dark, cynical and complex.

Went to see if my local theater, a Regal, was showing Ex Machina on the 27th. They aren’t, but they *are* having a $5 50th anniversary showing of Chinatown. I don’t know if that’s nationwide, obviously.

I hate that Prime now has ads; if I didn’t use them so much for shipping I’d drop Prime. Tubi has ads but it’s free, and may even have a better selection than Prime (though Max and Prime are probably the paid services whose selection I like best). -

I assume you mean the original, 1920 Caligari? There was a time when I wouldn’t give silent films a chance, but I’ve really liked several in the last few years. The Passion of Joan of Arc might have the best acting performance I’ve ever seen, no speaking necessary. I love Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler as well, set me off on a Fritz Lang kick that is still ongoing. -
This beauty showed up today. It’s beautiful, I want to thank @deckard99, @DodgyDave, @Masterblaster and especially @BreakBeatDJ for helping this happen. Already one of my favorites. This may sound silly but I think it’s a high compliment: this one feels like it was put together by people who really love the movie. I don’t understand how some of you have the willpower to keep from opening these. I have to play with my toys; though I hope to be an adult someday, today’s not the day. Booklet has old publicity pieces about the movie, it’s excellent: Victor Laszlo’s papers! I’m not sure how much I even love this next movie, haven’t seen it in 20 years or so, curious to see how the rewatch goes. But it’s a pretty cool steelbook: Really looking forward to watching this one, but after Casablanca (which I already have on and looks amazing):

Currently on Hulu, Kanopy and Hoopla! Another FYI, for folks who don’t know, Kanopy and Hoopla are services that are free, you sign up with a library card. I like Kanopy in particular, lots of Criterion movies. Hoopla’s app can also be used to check out audiobooks for free, they also have a massive graphic novel collection, all free. -
Ok, 2nd watch for me but it’s so good. Great revenge flick, also made me laugh out loud multiple times.

I’m going to try to get better at recommending movies for you. I’d already seen this, put it on to fall asleep last night, ended up watching the whole thing again. It’s a combination of revenge movie and comedy about dorks:
