ACHTUNG: Roman incomming! Aber ich fühl mich ein wenig mitschuldig, weil ich die Diskussion losgetreten habe, und möchte mich daher auch mal zu diesem sehr komplexen Thema über das hier diskutiert wurde Äußern. Also, holt euch was zu trinken vor dem Lesen, und dann hier für Euch der Text: 😎

Oh jeh, da hab ich ja was losgetreten, mit meinem gestrigen nächtlichen Post. Ich versuche mal ein bisschen zu mediatieren, denn ich finde, sowohl @Catgirl als auch @Cornbuster haben gültige Argumente, und ich finde, man kann das nicht so pauschal sagen, sondern sollte bei sowas immer im Einzelfall unterscheiden.

Was man definitiv nicht weg argumentieren kann ist, das 180€ (umgerechnet immerhin 360 DM - na wer macht das noch :D ), sehr viel Geld ist. Und @Catgirl hat vollkommen Recht damit, wenn sie sagt, dass solche Preise nur deshalb möglich sind, weil Kunden die auch zahlen. Letztendlich sind wir in einem kapitalistischem System unterwegs, und da gilt halt eben dass der Markt den Preis regelt - jeder Verkäufer möchte so viel wie möglich für seine geleistete Arbeit haben, jeder Käufer so wenig wie möglich ausgeben und daher trifft man sich dort wo der Preis gerade noch attraktiv für beide Seiten ist. Da Unternehmen normalerweise im Wettstreit miteinander treten kommen halt Marktfaktoren wie Angebot und Nachfrage noch dazu. Diese Marktfaktoren werden beim Videomarkt leider ausgesetzt, da immer nur ein Hersteller die Lizenz für einen Artikel bekommt. Und das nutzen - auch da hat @Catgirl leider vollkommen Recht - viele Firmen aus, weil sie um ihre Macht wissen, und mit cleveren psychologischen Mitteln künstlich auch noch Bedarf beim Kunden schüren. Für letzteres muss sich hier auch Kochfilms den Schuh leider anziehen, denn überlegt doch mal bitte, wann Kochfilms zuletzt mehrere Posts zu einem einzigen Release verfasst und dabei auch noch ein mehrteiliges Unboxing hochgeladen hat? "Teil 2 gibt's morgen" - das baut Erwartungshaltung und Hype, und soll letztendlich nur dafür sorgen, dass ein Bedarf entsteht. Wie krass sich die Preise teilweise entwickelt haben, sehe ich als damals leidenschaftlicher Filmarenasammler, der ich mal war. Ich schreibe ja alles mögliche in meiner Excel-Tabelle zu meiner Sammlung mit, und kann dann auch so lustige Auswertungen machen wie die Folgende: 2016 hab ich im Schnitt 35€ für ein normales Fullslip-Release bei Filmarena bezahlt. 2017 waren es schon 42€ - gut Inflation, 4K, vielleicht mehr Extras, etc. Wisst ihr was ich 2020 im Schnitt bisher gezahlt habe? 62€. Innerhalb von 4 Jahren sind Filmarena-Editionen um fast das doppelte teurer geworden; maximum lag bei 73€. In diesen 4 Jahren ist das gleiche Produkt, das Filmarena in beinahe der gleichen Ausstattung (gut heute ist es XL mit ein paar mehr Karten und nen Ordner mehr - in den Produktionskosten dürfte das aber nicht mehr als 1-2€ ausmachen) ausliefert, einfach mal um 100% im Preis gestiegen. Das ist absurd. Und diese Beispiele findet man regelmäßig. '84 Entertainment, ein Mediabook-Label das ich damals als eines der ersten Mediabook-Labels verehrt habe. Die haben schon damals nur Repacks gebracht und die dank "Mediabook-Hype" teuer an den Mann gebracht: 5€ in der Amaray, 25€ im Mediabook. Aber natürlich limitiert, nummeriert, und mit 2-3 Disks im Doppeltray, dem ganzen Pipapo, mit dem sich auch der Sammler diesen Aufpreis schön reden kann. Heute pusten die bissl Watte zwischen und wollen für ein Mediabook plötzlich 50€. Willst Du das nicht, wirst Du gebeten 1 bis 2 Jahre zu warten, dann kommt definitv das unwattierte Cover - in 3 Auflagen, unnummeriert, unbekannte Limitierungshöhe, 1-Tray, 1 Disc, zu bis zu 35-39€. Ich hab seit langem kein Mediabook von '84 mehr gekauft und das obwohl ich heute noch einiger ihrer damaligen Releases sehr schätze. Über Nameless Media hab ich mich anderer Orts auch schon mal ausgelassen - nimmt man die zwei (vom Alter, Reastaurationsaufwand, Anzahl der Disks, Limitierungszahl und Ausstattung) vergleichbaren Filmreleases zu Maniac (Nameless) und Suspiria (Koch Films/Capelight), dann kann man doch auch nur Fragezeichen im Gesicht haben, wenn das eine Release einen 75€ kosten soll (Suspiria), das andere Release einem aber zu 180€ (Maniac) angeboten wird. Viel erschreckender finde ich aber die Fans, die sich fast schon wie Lemminge verhalten. Koch Films/Capelight wäre hier zerrissen worden für solche Preise, da bin ich mir sicher. Bei Nameless wird jeder, der sich über den Preis ärgert, direkt von 100 Fanboys direkt mit Kommentaren von "Du musst es ja nicht kaufen..." über "Aber für die gebotene Qualität..." bis hin zu "Heul leise" und "Du hast ja keine Ahnung" oder "Zu teuer, wie lächerlich", etc. schon regelrecht diffamiert. '84 hat sich der harschen Kritik an den von heute auf morgen stark erhöhten Preise (45€-49€, je nach Händler) damit gerechtfertigt, dass es damals eben für die Freitag der 13. Mediabooks finanziell anders nicht möglich sei, weil das ja - ausnahmsweise! - kein Repack seien, dass die Produktion sehr teuer war, etc. Ein Jahr später haben wir hier kommentarlos Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill 1, Kill Bill 2, u.v.w. Tarantinotitel für je 50€ das wattierte Mediabook mit DVD+BD, bzw. 40€ für das 1-Tray-1Disk abgespeckte Book. Die Freitag der 13. haben sich nämlich trotz des hohen Preises verkauft wie geschnitten Brot, und der Sammler der schon mal 50€ für ein Mediabook bezahlt hat, wo er sich das selbst rechtfertigen musste (und dabei fleißig Hilfe von '84 Entertainment bekommen hat, in der Argumentation), bei dem fallen dann auch die Bedenken, wenn man das jetzt ein 2. oder 3. mal tut, und dann ist es auch schon wieder Normalität.

Und das sind nur wenige Beispiele gewesen - ich könnte hier noch bestimmt hunderte aufzählen, um den Punkt zu untermauern, der eigentlich nur sehr kurz ist: @Catgirl hat hier vollkommen recht, wenn sie sagt, dass die Preise immer weiter steigen, und die Firmen das so lange machen und machen können, wie es Kunden gibt, die das weiterhin kaufen. Die Mechanismen, wegen derer das gut Funktioniert sind eben Hype und Kundenbindung, sowie eben auch das Vorpreschen mit einem Produkt bei dem man das argumentativ gut begründen kann, um damit die Hemmungen fallen zu lassen. Dass man dann bei so einem Preis aus allen Wolken fällt und gleich das schlechteste vermutet, kann ich daher mehr als verstehen - ist bei mir nicht anders, und ich ärgere mich regelmäßig dafür das ich immer noch jede FAC und beinahe jede BB mitnehme, und frage mich immer häufiger, warum ich das eigentlich noch mache.

Auf der anderen Seite haben wir die Argumente von @Cornbuster, und hier muss ich dann auch darauf zu sprechen kommen, warum es eben eine Einzelfallunterscheidung ist und auch sein sollte. Denn letztendlich kann man sich immer hinstellen und sagen: "Naja, früher waren die Preise halt so" - aber da müssen eben auch Faktoren mit berücksichtigt werden, die wir bisher (bewusst übrigens - auch das erkläre ich gleich) nicht berücksichtigt haben, etwa dass der Markt generell immer kleiner wird, eine Produktion dadurch also auch immer teurer wird. Dieses Argument kann nicht angewand werden, bei Releases die sowieso und seit eh und jeh limitiert waren, wie etwa bei Filmarena, wo wir schon immer und auch heute noch bei Limitierungen zwischen 500 und 1500 je nach Titel waren - denn da macht sich ein schwindender Markt eben auch nicht bemerkbar, solange man alle Editionen abverkauft kriegt. Wenn wir aber von Serienboxen reden, dann ist es nun mal leider die Realität, dass wo früher Auflagen von 50.000 normal waren, diese heute einfach nicht mehr verkauft werden würden - und diese Zahl ist nicht aus der Luft gegriffen, ich hab selbst noch DVD-Releases, wo solche Zahlen als Limitierung angegeben sind. Da hat aber eben auch noch jeder DVD gekauft, weil es anders (legal) nicht möglich war Filme und Serien unabhängig vom Fernsehprogramm zu schauen. Seit wir 20 Streamingdienste zur Auswahl haben, die man alle parallel nutzen kann, und uns damit alles Film- und Serienmaterial der Welt [ja absichtlich übertrieben Pathetisch, die Realität sieht natürlich ein bisschen anders aus - aber wer für's Streaming argumentiert, argumentiert ja auch genau so] auf Abruf zur Verfügung steht, wären Auflagen von 50.000 wohl sicher der finanzielle Bankrott eines Unternehmen. Diese müssen also ihre Fixkosten (die eh immer da sind, unabhängig davon wieviel Produziert wird), auf deutlich weniger Produkte umlegen, und das wiederum sorgt dann dafür, dass die Preise hier automatisch steigen.

Der zweite, deutlich wichtigere Punkt, ist eben auch, dass man sich so viel oder so wenig Aufwand wie möglich mit einem Release machen kann. Allein daher kann man nicht jede Box direkt miteinander vergleichen. Um zurück zu den Mediabooks zu kommen: Während mir mittlerweile auch 30€ für ein '84 Entertainment Mediabook zu teuer erscheinen, würde ich bei einem Release von Turbine, Wicked Vision, Anolis, etc. auch 35€ oder 40€ rechtfertigen können. Die machen aber eben auch keine Repacks. Die lizenzieren nicht nur den Film und bannen den auf Disk. Die organisieren Extras, organisieren die best mögliche Kopie, lassen den Film neu abtasten, bringen Releases auf den Markt, die bisher noch keiner (teilweise sogar Weltweit) auf Blu-ray heraus gebracht hat, die erstellen eigene, exklusive Extras, die synchronisieren Stellen nach wofür die original Sprecher zusammen gerufen werden, sie lizenzieren Bonusfilme, sie schreiben die Untertitel selbst, weil es noch keine gibt, bieten auch Englische Untertitel an, etc. Und tun das alles für die gleichen 30€ die bspw. ein Namless oder 84 für Repacks verlangen. Nameless ist hier ein großartiges beispiel, weil diese jetzt schon 2 male einen Titel herausgebraucht haben, den auch Splendid in seiner Amasia-Reihe released hat: The Villainess und A Bittersweet Life. Bei Amasia: inklusive Bonusfilm auf BD, auf 2000 Stück nummeriert, für ~25€. Bei Nameless ohne Bonusfilm (aber mit DVD-Kopie) in 3x 1.000 Stück für ~35€. Uhm... ?!

Als mir das irgendwann mal bewusst geworden ist, hab ich mein Sammlungsverhalten größtenteils verändert. Bei vielen Repack-Titeln ohne viel ersichtliche Eigenleistung wo es nur um das Cover geht, oder um ein deutsches Release, nehm ich mir die Zeit und warte - nehme es manchmal auch in Kauf leer auszugehen. Und bei vielen Serien-Releases kann man sagen, dass dies der Fall ist. Wenn es was besonderes ist, wie bspw. SoA in der Holzbox, oder so, okey. Aber reine Digipak/Amaray releases, die lediglich das beinhalten was sowieso überall dabei ist, und die im Prinzip nur das Filmmaterial bekommen und es auf Disk gepresst haben, da wären es mir die 180€ nicht wert.

Bei Koch und Miami Vice scheint das aber nicht der Fall zu sein. Koch schreibt, sie hätten die Synchronfassung rekonstruiert (was auch immer das genau heißt) und auch selten gezeigte deutsche Dialoge dabei - was auch immer das genau heißen mag, man hat hier auf jeden Fall nicht einfach nur die letzte Synchronfassung draufgebügelt, sondern wohl Arbeit herein gesteckt; das zeigt auch, dass man zwischen unterschiedlichen Synchronfassungen wählen kann, u.A. auch der alten VHS Syncrhonfassung genau so wie der DVD-Neusynchronisation. Und auch beim englischen Ton hat man sich nicht lumpen lassen und nur (wie bei vielen Releases) die letzte, gängige Tonspur genommen, sondern auch den originalen Stereo-Mix zusätzlich zum 5.1 Upmix beigelegt. Auch schreiben sie, dass sie die Originalmaster nicht einfach übernommen haben, sondern neu encodiert haben, um einerseits sicher zu stellen, dass die Originalfarben beibehalten bleiben, und andererseits aber auch der Ton in der Originalfassung erhalten bleibt - dies sei im Gegensatz zu allen anderen weltweit veröffentlichten Editionen auf Blu-ray nur bei Koch der Fall. Dass dann auch noch Episoden in unterschiedlichen Schnittfassungen vorhanden sind und sich als solche abspielen lassen, dass deutsche und englische Untertitel dabei sind, etc. runden das ganze dann nur noch ab.

Es wirkt auf mich daher so, als könnte die Box ihr Geld auch wirklich wert sein, als hätte Koch hier viel Arbeit reingesteckt, und als könnte dieser Aufwand dann auch erklären, warum die Box so teuer bepreist ist. Und dann muss man sich die Frage stellen, was man erwartet hätte, wenn es lediglich um die Serie ohne diese ganzen Verbesserungen gegangen wäre (oder im Ausland gucken, was die so kosten) und dann individuell für sich die Frage beantworten, ob einem dieser Aufwand und Mehrnutzen, den Koch da erstellt hat, den Zuschuss zum erwarteten Preis eigentlich wirklich wert ist. Sprich, wer mit 120€ für diese Box gerechnet hatte: Ist der "nutzen" dieser offensichtlichen Mehrarbeit die Koch hier reingesteckt hat, mir 60€ wert. Möchte ich soetwas honorieren, auch wenn ich diesen Preis sonst nicht gezahlt hätte, oder sag ich mir: Nö, ich bin zufrieden mit all den Mängeln und will es lieber so günstig wie möglich.

Hier kann man keine allgemeingültige Meinung finden. Wenn es @Cornbuster egal wäre, und er sagt: Scheiß drauf, hauptsache ich hab die Serie, egal was da auf der Disk für Qualität haben und wenn es auch nur ein Repack wäre, dann fände ich das genau so bedenklich wie @Catgirl; und ja, diese Haltung gibt es leider - siehe den ersten sehr langen Absatz, den ich dazu geschrieben. Ich unterstelle ihm jetzt einfach, dass es ihm nicht nur darum geht, dass es ein Release gibt, sondern auch diese Faktoren eine Rolle spielen. Und dann kann ich es verstehen, dass er sich die Box kauft - um eben auch damit ein Signal zu senden, dass dann eben heißt: "Danke, dass ihr Euch die Mühe und Arbeit gemacht habt, das honoriere ich", wohingegen dann die x.te Blu-ray Box von King of Queens wo immernoch 16:9 Fehler, Tonhöhenprobleme, etc. drin sind, im Regal liegen bleibt, weil man lieblosen Scheiß dann eben nicht honoriert, selbst wenn es diesmal aussieht wie eine Pizzaschachtel, ein UPS-Paket, oder eine Bowlingtasche (und was die sich nicht sonst haben alles einfallen lassen).

Für mich persönlich sind 180€ für eine Serie die ich noch garnicht kenne, leider erstmal auch viel Asche, und ich habe beschlossen, ein wenig zu warten, und das ganze zu beobachten. Parallel werd ich mal in die Serie reinhorchen, aber es sieht ja zumindest vorerst so aus, als wenn Koch hier Auflagenstark unterwegs ist - die Box ist noch zu haben, und der Lagerstandsanzeiger ist noch auf grün (bei 10 Segmenten). Nicht weil ich die Arbeit nicht honorieren möchte, sondern eher, weil ich noch nicht weiß, ob ich mir auch die 180€ dafür leisten kann und will. Aber ich persönlich gebe auch lieber hier mehr Geld aus, als bspw. bei den mittlerweile sehr lieblosen Filmarenen (wo ich bei jeder Edition wieder mir die Frage stelle, ob ich die wirklich alle noch brauche), geschweige denn so Labels wie die oben angesprochenen.

Eigentlich bin ich wegen was ganz anderem hier, wollte aber erst einmal schauen, ob das nicht schon jemand gepostet hatte. Und dabei hab ich dann das hier entdeckt, und denk mir nur so: Ehrlich? Muss das sein? Da bin ich ehrlich gesagt, echt komplett raus, denn: Ich hab damals die normalen DVDs gekauft, kaum das sie raus kamen und zusätzlich auch immer die Gift-Boxsets mit der Extended Edition. Als ich dann auf Blu-ray gewechselt habe, habe ich mir dort die zwei Boxen gekauft; klar den Hobbit hätte ich nicht gebraucht, denn die hatte ich ja schon auf Blu-rays, weil die Gift-Boxsets schon die Blu-ray enthalten. Aber ich bin riesengroßer Tolkien Fan - die Bücher (alle, nicht nur HdR und Hobbit) hab ich in meiner Kindheit regelmäßig inhaliert, und ich liebe auch die Verfilmung von Peter Jackson. Hab dann noch Steelbooks vom Hobbit und dann als die Mittelerde Collection kam, hab ich auch die sofort gekauft. Das sind alles großartige Editionen, wenn ich für 4K noch mal Geld bezahlen sollte, dann eigentlich nur für günstige Einzelscheiben, oder es bietet irgendwas so besonderes, dass ich da noch mal wirklich richtig schwach werde. Der eine Ring ist da nicht gut genug, den gab es schon in ettlichen Ausführungen (meine liebste übrigens ein Echtgoldring mit Gravur die nur unter Schwarzlicht rot aufleuchtet), dieser "Mordor Display Stand" ist auch nix besonderes, und den Schlüssel gibts halt auch schon einzeln. Easy Pass.

Ich werd morgen definitiv nicht um 8 Uhr schon die Möglichkeit haben zu bestellen, würde dann später noch mal reinschauen. Auf Facebook jedenfalls drehen sie alle schon am Rad (oder sind extrem ausfällig wegen des Preises), und dann spontan entscheiden. Aber auch nur wenn's auf Rechnung geht, weil so plötzlich hab ich so viel ungeplantes Geld nicht auf der hohen Kante...

So, already a long while ago Wicked announced they would be doing a new series, but they are not telling us, how the packaging will be, so I cannot create a post in the appropriate place; which is why I decided to put it in here While this is not the right place either - yet - it is definitely going to be the right place in the future, because I am planning to getting these, and to be quite honest I am really excited (I'll explain a bit more below). Basically we hardly know anything yet, but what we do know are these things:

1) What the series will be named, and what its main focus is - thanks to this first teaser they revealed in July:

Now, why is that exciting for me? Well, to be quite honest, I don't know hardly anything about Black Cinema - when is it Black Cinema? Is there a certain style? Is it a time period? What are subgenres? What I do know is there is a thing called "New Black Cinema" which was coined in the 90s and basically all Spike Lee films (which I hardly know, to be quite honest) count into it. I own two movies that count towards this genre, Do the Right Thing (which arrived today) and Boyz n the Hood, but both I haven't even seen yet. Second subgenre(?) I know is the Blaxploitation genre, and for a long time I didn't even know what this meant. I had this list of movies, that Quentin Tarantino lists as crucially influential for his personality and his movies, and a lot of them are Blaxploitation movies and he often also talks about it in Interviews, so this is how I picked up the name of the genre. A while ago I got interesting and googled it, and learned a lot about the impact these movies had, and how important they where during the 70s and the crisis that Hollywood was in. And funnily I knew a few titles from their name, but none of the movies I've seen. So being a huge Tarantino fan, I was curious to seeing these. Unfortunately in Germany they are rather hard to get, especially in premium releases that also put them into context with a booklet or extras, etc. But in a comment Wicked said that they are not starting a Blaxploitation series, they are starting a

So honestly, as a movie buff, I feel like this is something I need to get into, and if only to have an understanding of what people talk about when they talk about these movies and to be able to make up my own opinion on these films.

2) We know that it is not going to be a Mediabook. Quote by Wicked Vision: "Es werden keine Mediabooks. Wir machen etwas viel, viel schöneres fürs Regal."; my translation: "It's not going to be Mediabooks. We are producing something much more beautiful for your shelf".

3) Wicked Vision is producing massive extras for this release, including a 10-part documentary, hinting that there will be at least 10 movies planned for this series? The other two posts with a teaser from this documentation series since their initial teaser that I want to share - and to my relief, Wicked made their post in German AND English, so you don't have to make due with my bad translations

The term Blaxploitation is immediately associated with films like SHAFT, SLAUGHTER or COFFY. But is it possible that a character named Virgil Tibbs paved the way for the antiheroes of film history? 4) So we know, that one of the first titles will be "They Call me Mister Tibbs!" - and when can we expect these titles? Well, after there where people in the comments that accused Wicked to jump on the "hype train", because of the problems in the US, Wicked said that they where planing this for two years now, and started working on this last year already. In one of the comments they now also mentioned the following: "Wir bemühen uns, die ersten beiden Titel vor Weihnachten zu bringen." - and my translation: "We're working hard on releasing the first two titles before Christmas".
 

So to summarize: In the coming three months we can expect two movies from the Black Cinema genre, one of them being "They Call Me Mister Tibbs!". For this release, there will be a series of exclusive new extras, consisting of ten episodes, and the packaging is kept as a secret till now, but according to Wicked it will not be a Mediabook (they did however not deny the Scanavo/Keep Case question but just ignored it) and it will be something beautiful for the shelf (which makes me wonder if it is maybe something with a spine image, especially as it is planned for 10 films, and having a fixed horizont of films would allow for this - similar to the Anolis "Galerie des Grauen" boxsets).


So, the few people that look in here, and have actually read this entire thing I posted: What do you think? Are you interested? Do you know Black Cinema? Do you have any favourite titles you'd wish to see in this series? Would you get them regardless of the package? What would be your package wish?

I've mentioned the fall cleaning sale Turbine does, and of course, I used the chance to further complete my Turbine collection. I already own a couple of their offers, for wich I paid much more unfortunately (or I own them in a more pompous first edition), like the Hellraiser box, The Invisible Man box, Death Machine mediabook, The Thing boxet, Donnie Brasco mediabook, Crying Freeman mediabook, The Shawshank Redemption digibook, The Fan mediabook, eXistenZ mediabook, Raising Cain mediabook, Unforgettable futurepak. I can recommend all of these releases.

What I ordered myself, on Sept. 28th, at 10 p.m., that already arrived today are these beauties:

Unfortunately all Mediabooks got dented on the edge - most visible at Scholock, thanks to the idiotic DHL, that is the most idiotic service that ever came into existance. I feel bad asking for replacements for these, as most of them where pretty cheap to begin with: Together with some bonus points I still had (worth 6€) i payed 50€ for the lot, all of them blind buys, so I have no idea as to what to expect. As you can see the titles are:

• Do the Right Thing, FuturePak/MetalPak. This is limited to 1500 copies and numbered on the C-Card (yeah that's something rather debatable with these releases in general), my copy being No 930. I've heard a lot of good about this movie including personal recommendations by friends. Topically, this movie is about racism, cleverly combines drama with comedy to create a nonchalant atmosphere, instead of being heavy and edifying. It's a single disc release, but comes with a lot (240 minutes worth of) extras and bonuses, including two audio commentaries.
• Mark of the Devil, Mediabook limited to 500 copies, with my number being 328, on DVD and Blu-ray, including a bonus DVD with additional extras. This is actually a German movie and one of the really few movies that where shot in Germany by a mainly German cast speaking English! Reason for doing so was the better international marketing. However, due to many rather graphic torture scenes this movie was banned in many countries, including Germany, and - if at all - was only shown in a censored version. Only in 2015 was there an uncut version for the first time by Arrow Video in the UK. In Germany, where it was (after indexing the movie) confiscated in 2000 (not allowing anyone to sell this film), the film was bought in 2011 by Turbine despite the confiscation, and released it in 2012 as DigiPak; they then went to court and reached a relieve of the confiscation in 2016, and in 2019 two mediabook Covers where released, and I got the Cover B of that release. The film is said to be a cult classic (probably also becaue of its history), and I am excited to watch this 1970s movie, which 50 years later is probably rather benign and boring  
• Schlock, Mediabook limited to 2000 copies, with my number being 142. To be quite honest with you: I wouldn't have gotten this release, wasn't it for the price of 9€. I first heard of it, when Turbine announced the title in one of their video podcasts, and hearing the guy raving about this film, I added the title to my list. Then after seeing a trailer - well - I was pretty unimpressed. Since then I've seen this mediabook a couple of times, but always left it behind, due to me not deeming this movie worth the initial 30€ for a mediabook. Now for 9€s I am willing to take that risk. We'll see.... with 79 minutes its a rather short movie, and with 67 minutes of extras it's also rather slim on the side of bonuses compared to Turbines usual standard.
• When the Wind Blows, Mediabook limited to 2000 copies, my being 1107. This is a movie I already nearly bought two times (something or other came inbetween though) so I am quite happy to finally pick it up at a large discount. Said to be rather sad and depressing - nothing for little children, this cartoon tells the story of an elderly couple preparing for the eminent hit of an atomic bomb; a fear that was so real in the 80s, and unfortunately grows again in recent days.

So, these are my pickups. Want to see any of this releases in greater detail, with photographs of the booklet, more in depth info on quality and bonuses, comparison to other releases, etc.? If so, just tell me which title you are interested in, and I will open up a thread in the appropriate subforum (e.g. here). And btw. this also goes for the other titles I mentioned above.

Bisschen Xena, bisschen MacGuyver, bisschen A-Team - nix davon so sehr, dass ich sagen würde, da wäre ich Fan von gewesen und bräuchte das jetzt auf Blu-ray. Knight Rider war da schon was anderes - ich mein, welches Kind will kein sprechendes Auto haben? Aber ich glaube, Serientechnisch hab ich aus der Zeit primär halt die Zeichentricksachen mitgenommen (X-Men, Bat-Man, Spiderman, He-Man, Turtles, Transformers, Super Mario Bros. Show, usw. usf.).

Hey movie lovers and collectors,

the German independent label "Turbine Medien" is doing a "fall cleaning" sale, i.e. a selection of their releases is rather cheap on their website, including a few FuturePaks (they call them "Turbine Steel" - but be aware, Turbine only carries Futurepaks, no Steelbooks!), Mediabooks and even some Box sets. I think the most interesting releases (at least for me) would be the two boxsets:

• Hellraiser - this normaly costs around 80-100€
• The Invisible Man - this normally costs arround 50-60€

I do own the Invisible Man box (I also have their first edition boxset of Hellraiser, which was more pompous, so I don't know how this boxset compares to the one I own), if you wish to see some pictures, I can make them, and upload them in an extra thread. And if you have any questions regarding any of the other releases as well, feel free to ask, maybe I can help.

I'll tag @Grendel once more (I feel like I'm doing that every other post nowadays ), because I remember him talking about the desire to maybe get the Invisible Man boxset in some other thread. Feel free to tag anyone you know that might find something at this sale

I do own those already, in a Mediabook (of course) by Wicked Vision (of course). I guess they'll have the same masters, quality-wise the Wicked release is really good (watched them all and love them :) ). But on the side of the extras, this Imprint release is rather interesting, especially due to the new 2020 extras. Wicked's extras include (fat ones indicate non-double extras, with the cursive one I am not sure):

And now I am caught in a dilemma - thank you @R1s1ngs0n 🤬 😉 On the one side I don't like the packaging at all, having three Amarays in a Hardbox is rather little effort, and the artwork is as uninspiring as it can be. And given that, plus the fact that I already own this one in a Mediabook featuring new and exclusive artwork, together with a collage of the original artwork (as shown on the Amaray covers) in the 24p booklet only cost me 35€, I find the nearly 50€ price a bit pricey (especially as this will most definitely also have additional shipping costs to Germany). On the other side, I really love this series 😍 And given that this release has audio commentaries for nearly every episode, plus two additional featurettes - all of which I don't know, I am really intrigued on getting this anyways. AAAAAAaaaahhhhhHHHH 🤪

Just as a small information: This release has high demand - yesterday during the day all releases at Wicked sold out. Apparently the Cover A had the highest demand, and Cover B and C followed (in that order). I was already preparing to search for additional shops to link, but I've seen that Wicked was able to restock, so today all covers are available again. But judging these signs I guess this will sell out rather fast (apparently it is one of the best Frankenstein movies from Hammer out there), so please if you want this don't hesitate too long. Hunting these Anolis releases once they are sold out is a pain in the <peeeep>. I've been searching for half a decade for three titles I still miss - two of them I had a really lucky shot, but with the last one (Qutermass and the Pit) I am ready to accept that I might never ever get it 😢

@Grendel and @Veum, I'll tag you here, because I now you take a liking in those old scifi classics. I am not too sure about @RAK, @Hollywood E Rock and @Casiusco - if I remember correctly you were also interested in old sci-fi classics? Does anyone of you know this movie? Are you interested in getting it? I just pre-ordered it with two other titles I wanted to get anyways, so once it's here I can tell you about the picture quality of the release, if there's interest from your side - I am curious how making a HD master from a 35mm positive copy (i.e. the one used for cinema projections) affects the quality in comparison to the way it is done usually. And of course, liking those classics, especially SciFi and Horror flicks, is another reason for getting it

Normally I don't post about Amarays, because normally I don't buy Amarays. Here I made an exception, because it's a new series by a great (but pretty discontinous releasing) German Label named Edition Hände Weg! (Edition Hands off!) - and just for my friend that always gets these wrong (*caugh* @Grendel *caugh*) - this is an independent label, not related to Anolis or Wicked Vision. They are however befriended with Anolis and in extension therefore also with Wicked Vision, which is why Wicked will carry them - but you will probably also get them anywhere else (Amazon, etc.).

Regarding the Label I cannot tell you anything, which - if you know me - is not due to a lack of trying. I am a bit obsessed in that regard: if I find something interesting, I try to learn as much as I can about it; with movie labels I look them up to find a website, something about their history, their previous releases, etc. But with "Edition Hände Weg!" there is no information around. They don't have a website, they don't have social media, no one keeps list of their back catalogue, there is no imprint, etc.. You know them only because every other year or so, a release by them hits the market - which you probably even miss. A few years back Anolis started advertising their releases as well, ever since they had a cooperation release a while back. So, instead of talking about them, we have to talk about their releases, which are mostly DVD releases, with their most famous ones being "Blood and Black Lace" (6 donne per l'assassino) by Mario Bava, "Cemetery Without Corsses" (Une corde, un Colt) by Robert Hossein, as well their "SciFi & Horror Classics" releases in Hardboxes, which include films like "Queen of Outer Space", "The Dark Eyes of London", "First Man Into Space", "2+5: missione Hydra", "Space master X-7", or "Rocketshop X-M" - I think this might give you a good feel about what this label focusses on: Classics from the time around the 1950s. On Blu-ray, as far as I can tell, there was until now just one release, "Lady Frankenstein".

With "Phantastische Raritäten" (Fantastic rarities) this label once more starts a series of releases (the above mentioned DVD series "SciFi & Horror Classics" just lasted 7 releases), and here comes what makes it interesting: The movies they want to focus on (according to Anolis) are those that studios and producers do not pay much attention to, which is why the availability of Masters is not optimal! The idea is to get movies on Blu-ray where no HD master has existed worldwide and where negative copies are not available(?). Therefore, they'll create own masters from 35mm positive copies, which do not yield perfect results, but they'll also put a lot of effort in restoring, so while you will have a lesser quality than you are used to with other HD releases, these releases will still be of rather good quality (and will not show hacks and treads in the picture, etc.). This explains the slightly higher price (21€) for a "simple" Amaray release. Yes, unfortunately, for packaging these releases will only be available on Amarays, however they opted for the higher quality(?) 14mm ones, and they'll also come with slip cover. Because there was no information about it, and I found the picture a bit suspicious I asked about the FSK seal and if it will have a flip-cover, but Anolis responded (5 Minutes after I asked!), that both, O-Ring and Cover artwork will not have an FSK seal (so this will probably be a removable sticker, hopefully on the shrinkwrap). They will however include a booklet, but that will be of course in German, and apparently they will also get an audio commentary, which of course also is just in German. Other than that, there won't be many bonuses, as these films never got any.

"The Human Duplicators" (German title translates to "FBI hunts phantom"), is an American science fiction movie from the year 1965 by Hugo Grimaldi and Arthur C. Pierce (uncredited) and produced by the now discontinued Woolner Brothers Pictures Inc, and was only released in cinemas as a double feature with "Mutiny in Outer Space". It features George Nader (who played Jerry Cotton) and Richard Kiel (Jaws in James Bond movies "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Moonraker"), and in the short 80 minutes runtime the movie tells the story about aliens trying to replace Humans with androids in order to take over the earth. As per their mission statement, this movie has never been released on Blu-ray before, I only found a DVD release, that sells between $10-$20 USD on different stores (but not on amazon.com). Plus, to make things even more difficult, there is also another movie called "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Human Duplicators" from the same year, which often show up as well.

As for their first release, this are the details:

• Movie in original Language (English) with German dubbing and optional German subtitles
• Audio commentary with Ingo Strecker and Mirko Rekittke [German]
• German trailer, US trailer, German advertising advice, picture gallery
• 24p booklet by Jörg M. Jedner [German]

Friends of the dated gothic horror movies from the island, the day has finally come!

Today, Anolis finally, finally announced the the release. It's been just an hour, but it's already online at the Wicked Vision shop (which I liked above) and in the next days other shops will follow to list them. Now, being able to see the covers in larger resolution, my question to you, as always: What Cover do you prefer? I was torn between cover A, which meets my tast in drawn covers and would fit ideally to the rest of my collection, and cover B, which is cool because it's something different, and which would be my choice if I'd seen them right for the first time, but somehow I got used to it, so I was really torn. Which is why I let my girlfriend choose, and now it's Cover B. But, well... aaaah. maybe I'll add cover A to the collection as well (even thogh I never wanted to double dip on these. Aaaaaah).

Let me end this post with all the details on the release, as well as the original words from Anolis (which made me smile, as I have just researched that information and shared it with you when starting this post) :

I do not disagree with you that even though the perceived difference is minimal for at least most viewers (including myself because I do not have the space and screensizes to really take benefit of the larger resolution), it is a big step on the technical side. And who knows what the future will hold. 8K? 16K? 32K? Having to blow up old releases from 1K to 4K, well that's not too easy to spot, but to 8K or further you will again notice blurriness, artifacts, etc. So even though I could not benefit from 4K, I know that a 4K disc would future-proof my collection in a way that HD cannot. So in general I totally agree with you, and if you want to strive for the very best, 4K might be the way. At least for current movie releases, such as Parasite is (I do believe that regarding classics you'd probably introduce more damage the higher you go with the resolution - 35mm will have it's limit as to how much you can blow it up, and never forget that film makers of the time also knew the limitations of the medium and used it cleverly. So in the end, what looked like a really clever and unspottable illusion on 35mm film intended to be viewed in VHS quality, now looks like really bad and cheesy effect on HD or UHD, because you can spot every plastic prop and every matte painting, etc.).

But in general I agree with you, regarding both, the technical advancement (even if we might not even see it), as well as their mission statement. I just wanted to explain to you why I understand what Criterion is doing and why. And I believe that if it was easy for them to switch from HD to UHD they would have done it - I mean they started out with LD, and did the jump to DVD and later to BD, and as far as I know they did it rather earlier than later. And your critique, comparing HD to VHS just didn't seem too fair to me

A gift from heaven for fans of those films.  I just wish, with the passage of time, they acknowledge and realise that the "highest technical quality" is not Bluray anymore. 

I do have a question regarding this, though. And maybe you or someone else knows more about the techical details and can answer it: To fully make use of UHD-BDs you would also need to make use of the wider color range available (HDR, HDR+, Dolby Vision, etc.), because if you don't then the picture would look faded if working on such large resolution with a limited color palette (see the Ara-Picture that is supposed to visualize this effect ).

Can older 4K Masters that have already be done for HD BDs be used for UHD, without needing to do anything on the picture? I was wondering this for a while now, but I couldn't find an answer yet. To my understanding, this should be an issue at the sampling step: the color on 35mm film is continuous (as is the resolution - at least in theory), but sampling discretizes it, so if the resolution of the color is lower than what is needed for these high definition color formats on UHD, this would make UHD releases from existing 4K masters that where created with the intent of using them as HD Masters not ideal candidates for UHD releases.

Any thoughts/information on this by someone with more insight to this?

If this is not the case, then again, I would say, @Parzival is totally right in wondering why Criterion does not do an additional "4K" lin, where they just take 4K copies of their already existing 4K masters, because all the work is already done, it's just the creating of discs. And even though it's a small market it is a market. Plus it's also an international market, with 4K not having this region blocks anymore. My guess is, that it's not that easy, but I don't know for sure (and maybe there is also licensing and rights problems, as it's usually the case with these matters?).

I do get that though! For me it's not a problem as German is my mother tongue, but I think a lot of German labels could do better, if they would create more internationally friendly editions (e.g. there are a very few releases where there was a dual language booklet, or where the text was included in English as Extra-PDF on the disc). Then again, it is a cost factor as well, and in Germany you'll hardly sell any releases that are English-only.

Again, I don't care myself, but I feel like a couple of releases in Germany could have been internationally interesting, so they loose a market; and as markets are shrinking in general for physical media this makes it even harder for German labels to survive. Luckily, for a label like Turbine this date is far in the future, I guess.

And as a small positive: At least it's in a language that could be digitalized easily, and where translation (due to similar language family) is more easily done and more reliable than given Asian languages. So if you _really_ wanted to read it, just scan the text with an OCR programm and feed it to Google Translate. That's what I like to do with European releases where I don't speak the language but want to know what's written in there :D

Well that's a harsh assessment, and I would argue that it is not accurate at all. VHS was a crappy and old format, that has been arround for 20-30 years. The technical advancement with the DVD was huge and therefore the adoption rate rather steep. BD has yet another high jump in the technology, regarding picture quality, but for many this different wasn't worth the switch, especially as it was not even 10 years since the DVD that one was yet again asked to change the entire technology, for a technology that not everybody is feeling has the same impact that VHS vs DVD had, and not many people got into. And with 4K it's even worse, it came even sooner and technology is rather expensive, for even less of a difference when compared to BD (I've written a rather long post about it here). Therefore the adoption rate for 4K is even lower, and instead of getting 4K releases, most people went from BD or DVD to streaming. But don't take my word for it, just take a look at the figures, e.g. if you follow @UltraHDBluray on Twitter, they regularly show graphs of sales, the last one is this:

So now let's think about Criterion - even though they are famous, this label is not a blockbuster label, but a label for niche films. They cater to film buffs and collectors, which is a really small part of people buying blu-rays in general (look at how many labels [worldwide] for instance produce films like Marvel films, and compare that with how many labels have done movies that Criterion does - just to see how big the market is for movies that Criterion does). Being Criterion from a financial point, an UHD release wouldn't make sense, especially considering the expensive care they put into their releases.

So, while I do understand the wish of having a 4K release, I think it's understandable that Criterion is not going for 4K and I think calling them antiquated just because they don't adopt every new technology, but considering all the other facts as well, is kind of unfair.

 

To be quite honest, this is one of this really few times that I am absolutely unimpressed by the choice of the movie. It looks like one of these "Jean Rollin" type of movies (well not that awful, but it goes in the direction), and I am also not a fan of movies that focus too much on erotic scenes - which regarding the trailer this movie seems to do. So one of the few that I would probably leave out. However, I finally somehow ended up getting all the releases by Wicked Vision in their Collector's series (as well as the Full Moon and Pete Walker collections), so there is this stupid voice in my head nagging me that I still would have to get this one as well, as otherwise my whole collecting effort would be in vain ( Stupid voice in my head! 🙄 ).

But also, I don't know the movie, and maybe it isn't as bad as I thought it was (I thought the same, btw. with Wickeds "Revenge of the Living Dead Girls" - and that was also one of these strange French sex-horror-movies, that I ended up rather disliking).

Anyhow, what covers would you chose? I tend towards Cover B, as it's not that racy as the other two, and has a complete artwork. Regarding the title, however, I'd prefer Cover C.

Number 41 in their "Wicked Collector's Edition" was announced today and it will be the movie Les Démons, by spanish director Jésus Franco Manera, better known as Jesse Franco, who according to wikipedia is a "prolific director of stylish exploitation and b-movies". This specific movie from 1973 can be counted into the "nunsploitation" sub-genre, i.e. (s)exploitation movies featuring nuns, and tells the story of nuns in a closter becoming possessed after the curse of a witch, making them sexually active. It's set in the 17th century and supposed to take place in England, but was actually shot in Portugal and is a French production. The official title is the french "Les Démons" (the Demons) but it actually got quite a bunch of alternative and international titles, including "The She-Demons", "The Nuns of Clichy", "Les Demons du Sexe" / "The Demons of Sex" and "Les Infants du Demon" / "Children of the Demons".

"Die Nonnen von Clichy" (the German title, that Wicked Vision chose), is going to be a 2 Bluray Disc-set - instead of a DVD copy, we actually get 4 different cuts of the same movie:

• French longcut (118 Min)
• Export cut (88 Min) [in German and English dubbing]
• German cinema cut (85 Min)
• Director's Cut (101 Min) -- only in SD quality(!)

Interesting for all the German buyers: The French longcut was never released in Germany, and therefore there wasn't any German dubbing for it, so Wicked Vision created new dubbings totalling to 30 Minutes just for this release. Interesting for the international buyers: The details list the languages German, French and English, but as the Extras only explicitly name the Export cut with English dubbing, I guess, that all other cuts will probably only feature German dubbing and French original language. However, the details also list German AND English subtitles - so I guess those are vaild for all the cuts. Regarding the extras however, only German subtitles are listed. So either polish up your French or German, or you have to live without them, unfortunately.

As for the Extras, these are listed:

• Audio commentary [German] by Dr. Rolf Giesen and Dr. Gerd Naumann [French longcut]
• "Exorcising Demons" - movie historian Stephen Thrower about the movie (I guess this could be English?)

Nothing much on this side, but given how hard it is to find information on this movie at all (I had to switch to the French Wikipedia, to finally have some background text about the story), I guess this lies in the nature of this movie. We get three artworks from unmentioned Artists, the first one looks like the German movie poster that was similar to the English/International one, and in different variation also used in an alternative poster. The second artwork looks like an Italian movieposter I found. The third one I couldn't find at all, and according to the style, my guess is, that it is once more an artwork by Timo Würz, but that has not been officially confirmed (I asked ).
