  1. Release: 15.09.2020
    Price: 29,99€
Shop: Pretz-Media (only shop left to carry this, so I hope it's okey to link them just this once)
    Limitation: 666

A word of advice upfront: This release was already sold out, and is sold out at most shops (and people are asking crazy prices on eBay already). I also missed it, but now Pretz has some last remainers on their shop. So if this is interesting to you get it as soon as you can!

On Christmas Eve last year Birnenblatt first announced that they plan to release a Tape Edition for "The 'Burbs" which in Germany is called "Meine Teuflischen Nachbarn" (My diabolic neighbours). This release will feature the vanilla Arrow master, and in addition there will be an audio commentary by the famous German podcast trio Torsten Sträter, Hennes Bender and Gerry Streberg (all of them comedians). Because they did not have any right for further extras, this should be a single-disc release and therefore just a Tape Edition was planned, as Birnenblatt reserves their Mediabooks for releases with more extras. However, on every post they posted to this release, a zillion people asked for a Mediabook - so on May 19th they announced that a 1-Disc Mediabook would be following (in my opinion 1-Disc = Digibook, but well), in a very low edition (just 666 copies), for all those crazy about Mediabooks. This release was however postponed 2 times, and so in the end, I missed the release and just saw it, once it was already sold out everywhere (some weeks ago). Originally planed to be released alongside with the tape edition in July it was finally shipped on Sept. 15th.

The release contains a 24 paged booklet by the famous German "Neo Zombie" magazie, and has an (as far as I know) exclusive cover artwork. Other than that and the already mentioned new extra, the disc is pretty vanilla, but uses the best available mater from Arrow Video. So this is most definately something for fans of certain packages (like Mediabooks) or Artwork collectors or completionist - there is nothing on this disc that wasn't already on any other disc, and there is far less on the disc than on others. But given that Arrow releases are expensive as well and that their Steelbook sold out pretty fast, the only other two remaining premium releases are the french "Édition Coffret Ultra Collector", and the SteelArchive Fullslip with an Scanavo Fullsleeve instead of an Ssteelbook, both of them sold out as well - this is a nice addition for a premium release for this movie.

Moviewise, this film deserves any premium edition it gets. This Joe Dante moive from 1989 has run pretty much under the radar, even though it features a great cast from Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher to Bruce Dern or Corey Feldman. It's a great comedy in a suburban neighbourhood where the arrival of some "strange" new neighbours change the entire neighbourhood and unleash great evil. A black humour parody that exercises sharp criticism on the philistine, that was not only filmed on a famous Filmset on the Universal Studios (which was also used by Jaws, or Deep Impact, and was lastly featured in Desperate Housewives), but also includes tons of little easter eggs to other films, like "Nightmare on Elm Street", "Gremlins", and so many more. This movie is just great fun to watch. If you don't know it, here is the trailer for you:

Oh, you are in for a treat. I don't know about the Lenticular, because I got the Fullslip release, but let me tell you that Steelbook in there is a real beauty, even though it doesn't seem like anything special, I really love it, and think it's one of the most beautiful Steelbooks out there. If I had to make a Top 10 list, this one would definately be in there, somewhere :) Lucky that you where able to still get it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and congratz on the good price :)

  3. Would you get these? I am still a bit torn. I do own the Steelbooks of all three movies (haven't seen the fourth, though), so there is nothing, other than maybe the artwork. But I also do love the movies, so I would not mind having them twice. Depends on the price I guess, all other releases in that time and my financial situation... Would be more excited if I didn't had them already, I guess. How about you, what do you think? Good idea, or will it be hard for Birnenblatt to sell these?

  4. Release: ???
    Price: ???
    Cover: 3 (planned)
    Limitation: ???

There are thing where you know, that it's simply not an incident - even if the people responsible are keeping silent. E.g. yesterday in Germany there was the first federal warning day since the German reunion, i.e. a day where on a federal level an alert is to be broadcast to all alerting system for a practice alarm to test for the emergency. Speaking of "keeping silent", naturally everything was silent (at least in Bremen, but that's not the only city I've heard of where this alarm failed!), sirens weren't sounding or did not exist anymore, alerting apps did not alert due to server overload, and alerts weren't forwarded due to unpreparedness. The only system that did work, was Birnenblatt's customer alerting system! On the stroke(!) of 11 they announced one of their planned releases to look forward to - a movie that I associate with the sounding of alarm sirens (so another reason why I do not believe that it's an coincident) : "The Purge" 1-4 - the movies where mayhem starts with the sound of the siren. So maybe the failing warning day was a good thing after all?

There is not much information yet, Birnenblatt just announced that this is going to happen, not when, not how many, not the prices, etc. Only the package: It will be a Mediabook release in three Cover variants. Plus, after a lot of questions asked in the comments there are a few additional details: Probably this will be a bundle release (at least that's their plan for now), i.e., you cannot just buy "The Purge" and "The Purge: Election Year", etc. I have asked them if there will be any additional never before seen extras, or bonuses as an incentive to getting these (as most people who are interested in the movie will probably own them as Steelbook release), but Birnenblatt evaded answering by stating that details will follow soon and that a booklet and audio cd (see below!) are already exclusive bonuses for this release. My second question was a bit more directly answered: I asked what about the planned part 5, which is supposed to end the movie series, and they said, that this movie is on their radar, but due to the postponed cinema release (it was initially planned for June 2020, but postponed a year due to Covid-19) they'll already release these four - they are sill waiting for the cinema release. To me this sound like they will plan to release part 5 as well, and might have even, if Covid-19 hadn't; however, keep in mind, that now licenses and rights might yet been sold, and Birnenblatt could end up empty handed. At least it's a good sign (to me) that the label is planning to get all parts of the movie.

As that is all there is to talk about regarding this release, let's take the time and talk about the label, which - as far as I know - I haven't till now. Birnenblatt is a small German label, done by one guy (Stephan). It was founded in 2009 without knowing what or where they want to be, exactly (at least looking from the outside - however, it was always about movies with Birnenblatt, from the get go). Their first release was the audiobook "Heath Ledger - The Last Days", based on the written biography by Brian J. Robb. It featured famous German dubbing artists (Dietmar Wunder [German voice for Adam Sandler, Daniel Craig, Cuba Godding Jr., etc.], Simon Jäger [German voice of Heath Ledger] and Anna Grisbrach [German voice of Michelle Williams]). After that, they organized a couple of smaller movie conventions in Germany, which included small Hollywood guests (e.g. Gunnar Hansen, the first Letherface actor). Six years later, in 2015, they released their first movie editions, "Black Sheep" and "Trianble" as big Hardboxes (if you are not from German speaking countries, you've probably never heard  of Hardboxes as a packaging type for Disc releases - this is yet another German speciallity [as are Mediabooks, but basically those are just Digibook packaging with certain fixed parameters]. Hardboxes date back to the VHS times, and are basically the old "clam shell" packages you know in the US and UK, but with harder material, and without a paper sleeve but instead direct printing on the case. I don't now if they existed elsewhere in the world? For DVD and BluRay these where imitated and in Germany these are pretty popular with a lot of collectors). And in end of 2015 they also released their very first Mediabook: "Michael Bay's Texas Chainsaw Massacre" which was an instant hit. And since 2018 they also did a couple of Future Packs. All in all, their catalogue is still pretty small, but for an independent label with hardly any resources, they really shine. In my opinion the strength of Birnenblatt releases lies in the quality of their products, especially the packaging. They always use special artworks, and usually they try to have a special finish as well - some of them are debossed, some use gloss varnish, they have a release with a ruber-like "soft touch" or "silk touch" feel and then there is a glow in the dark "Wolfcop" release, or their padded "Drive" release, that has the look and feel of the famous jacket featured in "Drive" - the very first and up to now only padded Mediabook that I love! They have a text-free backside, and all of their releases are always limited and individually numbered (via hologram sticker). But not only on the outside - also the inner values are great: The design is great, you have either an exclusive text by a famous German movie magazine (Zombie Neon Magazin) or recently they write their own text, the booklet has a sewn binding of high quality. But also their content used to be really interesting. Instead of just having the DVD copy, they always tried to add something else: We got bonus movies, soundtracks, audiobooks and radio play, which where all pretty neat extras. Unfortunately, this is a place where they started saving money - recently there is always a second disc containing just a reading of the booklet text, which to me is the most useless extra you could add (even the DVD copy has more value to me). But other than that I cannot complain. I have nearly all their Mediabook releases and am still pretty happy about them, so I am looking forward to the "Purge" covers we'll get to see.

And now, that you know all there is about this label, let's get to the movie series - in case you didn't know them till now. In my eyes, this is a great series of movies that combines horror and thriller with a dystopian social criticism, that targets a couple of social evils without being edifying or seeming morally superior. But what's it all about? To reduce crime and unemployment to a minimum, the USA introduced "The Purge" - a night where for 12 hours all social ans security systems are shut down. So for 12 hours people are free to do whatever they want - without any consequences. Looting, burning, stealing, raping, murdering: Everything is allowed. People are free to participate or to barricade themselves, but everyone is on their own. And with this premises, the movies explore different aspects during this Purge. The first movie is more of a classic home invasion movie, if you want: During the purge, the house of a rich family that can afford extremely high quality security system is under siege by a group of Purgers, who are out to kill. In the second movie, we get to see the view of a couple of people who would have wanted to go home, but got hold up for some reason or another (e.g. car broke down, etc.) so we get to see what happens outside of your safe home. The third movie plays even further in the future and focuses on the difficulties to get rid of this day, and goes into the political perspective of it all. And last but not least, after already looking a bit into what led to the instalment of the Purge in the previous film, the last film (so far) goes back to the first Purge and how and why the purge came into being.

  6. While thinking about my "Whys" regarding my love for these Awards (and also, why - if I like them so much - I haven't spent the time and money to just get 10 Weet or Diskino or HD Zeta, etc. releases), I once more came to an idea, regarding the "what's still missing" :D

As I've mentioned there, for me these rewards are most interesting because they can also tell a story about the person you are just "looking at" (i.e. reading a post of), because it will tell you what they like, what they focus on, and what they (in turn) don't like. We had a lot of discussion here, on how easy or how hard it should be to get these awards, and I was always somewhere in the middle - but thinking about this, I once more like to suggest to have these more "general" awards. Because for me, what I feel people should know about me, when it comes to my collection is, that I am crazy about three types of packages (Fullslips, Steelbooks and Mediabooks), with the largest portion being Mediabooks (nearly 400), followed by plain old steelbooks (around 300) and only on third place Fullslips (around 200).

We have some "entry level" awards, such as the 10/25 per label, or the 25 Fullslip/Lenticular. But I would still love to see a more general award for just normal packages, but maybe make it so high that it still stay's something special (say 100+ Steelbooks, 100+ Mediabooks, 100+ Fullslips, Amarays, etc.) - maybe even higher. What do you think? Just to somehow map the "flavour" of each collector here even a bit more, so to speak :D  To make the award bar somewhat more specific to the collector, and not to generic, so to speak. For instance, I feel really good about my NM, ML, BF, FAC, BB, and PA awards, but not too good about Kimchi, because I only buy them occasionally. I just happen to have the 10 releases, while the others I have far more, and often check their websites for news.

While also, allowing us to display our love, for something that means a great deal to us.

For me, that's the main reason, I guess. Well also a bit that I am a victim of gamification and every new award is a level up of sorts. That's always a nice thing, but it's really not the main thing for me - also not too much the feeling of being proud, but actually more a "look, I am collecting these because I love them". I've been jooking about how now I need to get x releases from this or that company in the past, whenever there is a new award which I cannot apply for. But up to now I never bought a release just so that I can have another reward (and be proud of it).

But for releases that I really love and where I really care about the releases - that's where I really like to see a reward, not because I want to be rewarded, but because I want to share the love. That's why I participated so much in the suggestion topic, asking for MantaLab and Plain Archive, as well as a Mediabook award (still waiting on that one to come true :D ). Just because I want to show in my signature, what kind of collector I am. A look into my signature and you'll see: I am a Fullslip collector, I like Filmarena (both Black Barons and FAC), plus a couple of Asian companies: ML, PA, NM and Kimchi - I do love Lenticulars (and if you then read my posts you'll find that I am really picky about them, and that Lenticulars are a reason why I got into those Asian companies I mentioned above); and yes, I am crazy enough to make a lot of photos and inform you guys about interesting releases. These little Rewards can make you read a person like reading a profile :D

@pygospa you got a point. The OP included this sentence:

Which would certainly mean that what you wrote should also be part of this award. I adjusted the OP for members like yourself and some others who regularly post in release topics, detailed pictures of new arrival. I love these posts and would love to see more of them. The main raeson why I forgot about it and did not mention such cases, was that for handing out the first few awards it was the logical thing to go through the categories I mentioned. Otherwise poor @R1s1ngs0n would still be searching the forum and counting posts from members 🤣

I thik the updated version is now more clear.

So everyone who is posting his new arrivals in releases topics is also very welcome to participate in this Award, and will receive it after 5 posts as well. I will award some members in a few minutes (the ones that do this regularly), and invite others to come to this topic and let us know when they reached the 5 posts so they can also receive our great new award.

    Thanks for the feedback 😃

Thanks for your feedback. The reason these dedicated 'show your latest arrivals' threads were created is precisely for members to freely show their latest aquisitions, without fear of cluttering the release threads which are more suited for general information and official beauty shots.

The awards were created later as a way of showing our appreciation for members who regularly post and also to incite more members to actively participate, which I think is what every healthy community should strive for.

As for your second post - I am also a member on the other site as are many others here, so there is absolutely no need for you or anyone else to feel any reluctance about mentioning them or any other forum. The reason why they are not talked about around here is because we don't feel there is any need to do so... which is more than I can say about them.

Thank you very much for your open minds and incorporating feedback where you feel that it is in the interest of the forum. I really appreciate it. It what's makes this place so special, I guess. I totally understand why you did it the way you did it, and maybe I just didn't understand it the way it was meant, because to me it seemed like you where only awarding those using those three forums, but using them as a starting point is totally understandable and I feel with poor @R1s1ngs0n who ends up doing all the work!

Maybe, to ease up the work you have to put in, just ask in the entrance post for users to also nominate other users if they fit the profile - so it's not just you looking around and others having to actively put up their hands, but if I know that @extantsrevenge deserves this reward, beacause I've seen him posting photos of his new arrivals (which he only does in some secret hidden french subforum), then I can just tag him here. I think a lot of members would join in, if the rules stated it was okey to do so?

One more thing, @R1s1ngs0n: You misunderstood - I do not even have an account there :D (or maybe I do, but then never ever used it :D ). That was my whole point - I never really felt good over there - here it's a totally different thing. Which is why I sometimes feel that the Admins of the forum don't even see their value. To me it always feels strange if you aren't allowed to use certain links, because it seems like you are afraid to loose users. I feel like that fear is unsubstantiated - they should be more afraid of us, than we of them ;) But that's rather offtopic now.

Lol. I was wondering, if I should name them, or if it is not liked on this forum (which somehow puzzles me as well - we have so many good selling points for this community, why do we need to be afraid of others? I knew them long before I knew this community, and I decided to come here, and not to them, so do we really need to be that afraid? ;) ), and I decided to just use the acronmy which only those would understand who already knew what place I was referring to. Still funny to see what the censoring bot made out of it: Hamton Ducks Nargles :D :D:D

To receive this award you need to post at least 5 times different new arrival pictures in the areas I mentioned above.

Why is it just those three areas? For me I never post in those for a simple reason: I would only browse them when I have some spare time to kill, but I would never look in them when I was searching for something specific. Which is why I usually put my new arrivals in the places where I find they "matter the most". Just one use case, for an example: If I had the opportunity to get the ML Joker release from somebody for a certain price, I would look up pictures (or videos) for that one to see if it's worth the price to me. Or another: I waited on ML Joker and FAC Joker, to compare them using inhand photos, so once the release is out there, I look up in hand photos to hunt one of them down. Or even another use case (probably the one I am confronted with the most): I get a recommendation for a movie (or I have seen one that I really like on TV/Cinema, etc.), so I start looking up the different releases that are available, because if I decide to spent money on a movie, I always like to get it in the "best" edition (which is a compromise between best package and most bonuses and extras available for the price I am willing to spent). And in these use case, if I am on a forum I would never look up the "recently bought" sections, because I would be scrolling like hell, not knowing if I would ever find what I am looking for. This is why I put the photos of my new arrivals in the threads that I feel they belong the most (e.g. ML Joker, Criterion or Sleepy Hollow Mediabook - to name just a few, where I know that a lot of people where interested in the pictures for these new arrivals; if I had put them into the 'Just arrived'-threads then people interested in the Sleepy Hollow edition [which was a real struggle to get in the edition you wanted to have], people interested in these might not even have seen those, to evaluate if they are still willing to go through the struggle or just drop it, or be happy with whatever edition they get).

And please, don't get me wrong: It's not because I really want this award - if I wanted it so badly I could easily whip up 5 new arrival posts - most of the times something arrives first thing I do is a photo, and I could easily put these together for posts. The reason is another: While I think these "Look what I bought recently" are a lot of fun, and I do look at those threads myself, I wished more people would present their editions "where they'd belong", because in my perception (and maybe that is just me) this is done far to little on this forum. If I search for a specific release because I want to see some "in hand" photos, I usually end up on other big English forums, like Hamton Ducks Nargles, where you nearly always find photos of the releases at the end of the release thread. And I think that's a bit sad for us. I would love us to have this usefulness which might even attract new users. But by promoting just these collective "what I've bought" threads, and just rewarding those I feel like it would train people to just use those threads, and not the release threads.

And maybe it's just me, using forums this 'antiquated' way (and not like a chat, like most people are doing these days), but well, that's just my two cents, just some constructive criticism or food for thought, I hope ;)

Black Panther was my number 2 favorite character in the MCU with Captain America being my absolute favorite, & Chadwick became one of my favorite new talents in the business. He deserves the praise given all the work he did while being sick himself.

Totally agree with that comment, it's a great signature, and I was shocked to hear that Chadwick was suffering from Cancer for years now. Couldn't have told, seeing all the movies he made the last years; I mean he knew in 2016 and still made 10 movies during his last years. I was especially surprised by 21 Bridges, which is a great movie, in my book. But I also really liked the Black Panther movie. It's really sad that now we probably never get to see the sequel, that was already in development 😰

I suppose it's too much to hope they might re-issue it for this set but oh boy, if they do, I'll  buy TWO!  🥰

Well, as it is in their "mission statement" to never re-release something, and they sticked to it for 22 years now (with the only exception being the upgrade to Blu-ray which is either accompanied by also a drastical package upgrade for those title they did re-release [i.e. the Hammer releases] or it was planed from the getgo and therefore the 'premium' version had space and coupons for the Blu-ray rereleases [all the Kaiju Classics Anolis released - original version is a Metalpack containing just the DVD, but they come with a coupon for the Blu-ray Amaray which - due to strange licensing reasons by the Toho studios weren't allowed to be released together]). So I guess unless they do a re-release on an even better medium (that in this case has to be 4K - I don't think there'll be any physical media after 4K), there is no chance. And having those movies released in 4K would probably make no sense anyways.

Also, as far as I know, these releases don't have that big of a market. That's the reason they don't release them in Mediabooks, as you have to have a minimum quantity for it to make sense financially, plus they cost much more in production, making the release even more expensive than it already is, and so in the end, it's the cheapest standard packaging (even though they get all the same care), so that it's still feasible to be released. I mean, how many people do you know that actually buy 50s Sci Fi movies? I don't know _any_ and I do have a lot of movie collecting friends. And given that German releases have a smaller market as it is (not many international customers are interested in German releases, and Germans wouldn't buy more internationally friendly releases [i.e. German booklet, or all extras in English] those German labels are already pretty limited in the quantity they can sell]).

I'd rather try to monitor all those secondary market places.

  15. Small addendum to the movie trivia, that I forgot to mention: Actually, Susan Denberg, is seen in this movie, but never heard. Her austrian accent was to heavy for the producers, so Denberg got dubbed by a native english speaking woman; I couldn't find out who did the dubbing - maybe there's something in the booklet or the extras of the coming release on this; but given that there is no mention of the voice actress I guess that she is not well known. Never the less, I find it rather sad, as I like to hear the actors in their real voices.
