It’s All About The Performance

One of of the biggest challenges for any movie lover, I think, is to come up with a list of his/her 10 (sometimes just even 3) favorite films and actors. It seems like an impossibly daunting task (especially with films) as there is so much to choose from and we constantly change our minds, depending on our current  mood and especially as we grow older (and hopefully wiser).

My challenge for you my friends is to think hard and list what you consider as the 10 greatest ever acting performances in cinema.

Needless to say it goes for both male and female performances and it can include both leading and supporting roles. Last thing would be to highlight what you consider to be The single greatest performance.

another really good actor I currently like a lot is Mahershala Ali, dude was so good a Cottonmouth in Luke cage, and back to back good performances in Green Book and Moonlight and now in True Detective, I hope he gets really big roles in the future

Sorry but this is just too hard for me. I like certain movies and certain actors but certainly nobody else would consider them the "greatest ever in cinema". That said, here are some of my personal favorites in no particular order:

I knew this one would be a tough proposition. But it is very interesting (and revealing) to see what other members picked as their top acting performances. Also interesting to see that except for myself nobody had listed a performance in a movie released before the seventies (and no ladies 😩). That may be probably due to my being older than the rest of you (pure speculation, however) and the fact that the seventies marked the beginning of cinema’s golden age where movies and acting took a much more realistic approach.

I am sure, however, that @Scary Hair will buck the trend when we get to see her list 😉

BTW @cypheria078 your 9th pick has given me cause to reconsider my list.

Snowpiercer  Curtis Everett  proving Chris Evans is wasted as Capt America.  The depth of emotion  describing the horror of the situation when they first boarded the rattling arc .

 

Dredd  Karl Urban is Dredd . Even with his face hidden Urban owned the movie 

 

Kinky Boots Chitawel Ejiofor  Lola / Simon . He rocked in 7 inch stiletto heels . Showing that being brave is being true to who you are .

 

Jaws  Robert Shaw  Quint  Grizzled , bad tempered with a blazing insane  drive to end the shark .

 

Dracula  Frank Langella  Dracula a simmering lonely creature truly captured by Langella 

 

Viggo Mortensen  Aragon  LOTR  doing all he can to shy away from his path because of his fear of failing like others of his bloodline before him 

 

Rami Malik Bohemian Rapsody  Freddie Mercury  a magical 224 minutes I have a LEGEND from my life back . 

 

Inglorious Bastards  Hans Lander Christopher  Waltz  just chilling end of .

 

The Elephant Man John Hurt  to embody John Merrick  as he did from the voice to the physical side Genius. 

 

 

Ladies 

 

Octavia Spencer Snowpiercer  Tanya a revelation and raw talent  . 

 

Tilda Swinton Constantine  Gabrel   she truly was unhinged  and carried the androgyny to the max .

 

Sigourney Weaver  Ellen Ripley  gave women a foothold in a genre way before anyone else .

 

Whoopie Goldberg Jumpin Jack Flash had me screaming in fits of laughter and suspense 

 

Angela Basset Strange Days Mace who went from being a victim to kick ass personal body guard 

 

Vanessa Hudgens  The Frozen Ground a emotional rollercoaster ride from the view of a young adult fighting to be believed against an upright citizen .

 

Jodie Foster Silence Of The Lambs  Nothing more I can say  other than LEGEND

 

Jamie Lee Curtis Blue Steel Absolutely underrated movie and performance  . 

 

 

Kathy Bates Misery Annie Wilkes PERFECT  personification of how to cause Misery

OMG Jumping Jack Flash, completely forgot about this film. Watched it countless times when I was a kid. Whoopie was hysterical in it. Now I am being reminded of another movie with her and one of Hollywood's best psychos, Brad Dourif - Fatal Beauty.

@45Caliber I know what you mean. My point was that had any of these films been shown on TV, I would have definitely watched it.

On the other hand, a classic like Gone With The Wind is a movie I have never seen, nor do I ever intend to. It might be an excellent movie but it just doesn’t pick my interest in any way.

I was forced to watch this in like 5th grade and it bored me to tears at the time, so I will likely never revisit it.
