  1. I think they have to know the disc buying audience well enough to know that Buckaroo Banzai would do well. Beverly Hills Cop Nightmare on Elm Street Repo Man Terminator Spinal Tap We’ve just had a Blood Simple Criterion, Footloose is coming up and Starman is in the next Columbia Classics set.
  2. Yeah that show looks right up my alley. I’m kind of a stereotypical dude in that I love watching, as Jules said in Pulp Fiction, gangsters doing gangster sh*t.
  3. I think Phantom Thread is in the running for most true to life marriage comedy. Why yes, I am divorced, why do you ask?
  4. Agree with the 5 stars on your top 3, which are unassailable. TWBB is probably the #1 movie I would most like to see come to 4K; definitely top 5.
  5. Oh! How did I forget The Rover and Animal Kingdom?? Really enjoyed both but especially Rover.
  6. After this conversation, randomly came across a list of expected upcoming Warner Bros releases on Digital Bits: I hope it’s true. I would like to have most of these releases, actually.
  7. I probably need to revisit this first one, saw it when I was a kid, when I thought anything that old was hokey. I don’t think I even knew about Return.
  8. Oh, I did watch Maverick again this weekend, so much fun. Cruise makes acting choices that no one should get away with and lands every one of them. Finally got around to watching my 4K EXistenZ. Solid transfer but not spectacular. But man what a prescient movie. Cronenberg sort of predicted a lot of things that were going to happen in the subsequent 10-20 years and it was a lot of food for thought. I worked all weekend, wanted to watch more. Was looking at that beautiful MAG BR 2049 set and ended up watching that for what must be the 5th or 6th time. Still a masterpiece! Great detective story with a lot on its mind. It’s odd but I don’t expect people to fall in love with it until the 2nd watch. There are a lot of movies that I feel this way about. On the 2nd watch you’re not as consumed with the plot and how everything will turn out and it allows you to take note of all the other things that the film is doing. I always love a Coen brothers movie more the 2nd time that I watch it; they typically have such convoluted plots.
  9. Yeah, it’s a true, cynical noir. No one to really root for, just a series of bad (and also not terribly bright) people making, like you said, bad decisions. Not everyone’s cup of tea but when done right, I love it. This one actually makes Fargo look optimistic!
  10. There aren’t any great versions available, really. I have a plain blu ray that I’ve had for over a decade. Looks like there was a steelbook at some point but good luck getting it. Same with TWBB, minus the steelbook as far as I can tell. I was really surprised that they didn’t even put Licorice Pizza out in 4K. I think Phantom Thread is the only of his movies currently available in the format. It’s unfortunate. He either just doesn’t care about physical media, or he’s a perfectionist like Fincher. I hope Fincher keeps working on his other movies after the upcoming Seven release.
  11. I’ve always been a Rams fan and was still halfway rooting for the Lions. Hope they win the Super Bowl.
  12. Thanks! I completely blanked on Breaker Morant, great movie. I saw Young Einstein back when it was a hit but I was a kid and barely remember it. I’ve seen Muriel’s Wedding; always wanted to see Romper Stomper and Chopper. Have to add the rest to the list. How is there not a great movie about Ned Kelly? One or two decent ones, but not great. Although I guess there wasn’t a great Jesse James movie until the Pitt/Andrew Dominik version (I realize most people don’t think it’s great, but I do).
  13. We now have at least an inch of snow, which is apocalyptic around here. Everything’s cancelled!
  14. That’s awesome. Of those groups, I too would probably join the wankers. I watched Wake In Fright for the first time last year and it actually reminded me of places in Kentucky near where I grew up My other Australian faves: The Proposition (love love love this movie) and Picnic at Hanging Rock. I have the Criterion 4K of Walkabout in my pile of movies to watch, bought it a month or two ago, maybe I’ll pop it in tonight. Any Australian movie recommendations?
  15. Seconded! Probably less accessible than other PTA movies, but outstanding. I love him, wish we could get more of his stuff in 4K. Punch Drunk Love is part of the next Columbia Classics set, can’t decide whether or not to pull the trigger. If it were The Master, or There Will Be Blood or Boogie Nights then I definitely would. I love the idea of Boogie Nights in a Columbia Classics set.
  16. Oh man, one of those moments when you remember that Australia was populated by convicts. i shouldn’t joke, that sucks.
  17. I was looking up something that I saw a few years ago on this site and it occurred to me that other movie fans might be interested (if not already familiar): https://m.youtube.com/user/everyframeapainting/videos A lot of the older posts especially are just breakdowns of great movie scenes. Good stuff.
  18. It his every button you have as a filmgoer. Obviously, but almost never obviously enough to be insulting. It threads a hell of a needle that way. And if you have any nostalgia at all for the original then that just triples the effect. The playing on the beach scene (not just playing with the boys this time) is the only thing that made me say “we don’t have to hit every beat do we?” By the way: someone with the judgment of Cruise or Pitt needs to help Glen Powell choose roles and generally steer his career. That guy has all the tools of a movie star, just needs better movies (though I’ll stand up for Everybody Wants Some as a movie star performance in a good movie). I’m going to end up watching Maverick again this weekend.
  19. Great pics! Yeah, this is the set that got me running over here to join, as quickly as possible, and I have to say that it had exceeded my enormous expectations. Amazing.
  20. Supposed to work all weekend, BUT it rained hard all day, temperature in the low 50s. Temps are now dropping, supposed to hit freezing temps by 11pm, could be ice on the roads by morning. So taking my laptop home in case I need to work from there, about to go pickup my son and go to the grocery. Which will be packed because everyone here treats these weather situations like they’re the apocalypse.
  21. Congrats on the internet! New TV, 4K and streaming capability, what else does anyone need?
  22. I’m really curious to see what you think of Blood Simple. I haven’t watched it in years and hope to pop the new disc in this weekend. I always loved it; really dark, full of terrible people doing terrible and/or dumb things. Regular Coen stuff.
  23. Thank you for posting this; I’m sure they’re covered on this site but I was unfamiliar with Kimchi until you posted this. They’ve got some really cool stuff! There’s a lenticular Blood Simple full slip that I’m tempted to buy and put my 4K disc in.
  24. I’m in. Love this movie. Never really looked at MLIFE before. I like the look of their Lighthouse release.
