Favorite Mob Films

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I am taking a cue from @45Caliber and wanted to start a topic dedicated to my favorite movie genre - gangster movies.

Mob movies, even average ones manage to somehow entertain and the great ones, although we can recite them by heart, we still find ourselves watching them for the 36th time when we happen upon them on tv.

Although I’m pretty sure the 2-3 top spots will be shared by pretty much the same movies, I am still eager to see your top 5 so we might perhaps discover some underrated gems no one has heard about or seen before.

And I will conclude with a quizzie:

Name the first Sopranos alumni (actor and character) we see in the opening scene of Goodfellas (clue: he’s an amateur of well shined shoes).

Cheers

1. Goodfellas - my all time favorite movie, just perfect on every level. For me it’s the perfect marriage between artistic vision and entertainment value.

2. Once Upon A Time In America - epic, brutal, melancholy and poetic. IMO has the greatest soundtrack of any mob movie.

3. Miller’s Crossing - rarely mentioned in the same sentence as the other usual suspects but for my money it’s the Coen’s greatest achievement, with unforgettable performances from the great late Albert Finney, Gabriel Byrne, John Turturro and Jon Polito.

4. The Godfather &

5. The Godfather Part II

Slight preference for the first one but both are masterpieces, even at the bottom of the list.

Honorable mention:

Casino

Donnie Brasco

The Untouchables

Very interesting list. Like we say « oldies but goldies »

But I want to see your ‘real’ top 5 as well.

PS - Joe Pesci never appeared in the Sopranos.

Okay, let's see (still thinking)... did you notice I deleted JP because I had no idea! shh.gif icon_razz.gif

Besides those I've already listed (& yes they are some of my favs)... I really do not have a "real" top 5, I can not list a top "5" for me, just too many greats!...

in no particular order:

The Godfather (all), The Roaring Twenties (1939), Force of Evil (1948), The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, Donnie Brasco, Al Capone (1959), Goodfellas, Serpico, A Bullet for Joey (1955), Bullets or Ballots (1936), White Heat (1949), Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye (1950), Once a Time in America, Pulp Fiction, Gotti, The Departed, Casino, Miller's Crossing, State of Grace, etc.

... as you can see, there's just too many greats for me to keep on listing & there are some Film Noirs that have gangster qualities in them I've not listed! ;)

@Veum Did you see? We were both ‘green’ lit. By whom, that still remains a mystery.

I see now, what does the green MP guardian stand for? quizzical.gif

Interesting topic. For me when I think of mob movies. The ones that instantly pop in to my head are the Godfather and goodfellas. Absolute classics.

I also love Casino aswell. Joe pesci's performance in that is top notch

It will be interesting to see how Scorsese's the Irishman is later this year as it's a good story and has a lot of familiar faces in, albeit there all a considerable age now.

My list would very closely mirror @R1s1ngs0n's as it's hard to best these films in the genre. I may give a slight edge to Untouchables over One Upon a Time, however. I would also give @Veum's choise of Public Enemy honorable mention.

My alternative 5 would look something like this:

  1. Bullitt - Dir. Peter Yates
  2. White Heat - Dir. Raoul Walsh
  3. Point Black - Dir. John Boorman
  4. The Friends of Eddie Coyle - Dir. Peter Yates
  5. Le Cercle Rouge - Dir. Jean-Pierre Melville
