Goodnight!

A note for everyone on a previous topic:  I’m sure it’s a complete waste of time, mine AND his, but I’ve emailed the head of the Kubrick Exhibit to ask him about future plans and tell him how much a bunch of psychos would love to see his exhibit, especially in the eastern half of the US.  Apologies to psychos who live elsewhere.  Again, surely a waste of time, but nothing ventured nothing gained.

I'd be curious @hansreinhardt why you can't get through The Godfather?  Pacing, production value, can you articulate?  I'm genuinely curious.

I agree with @ncraft,  comparing Casino to Goodfellas, isn't a close call for me.  Casino is a fantastic movie, but Goodfellas is an incredibly rich character study: really explores identity, belonging, loyalty (loyalty as it relates to self definition, not simply loyalty as a organized crime trope), and the stakes in Goodfellas are intensely personal and post-modern.   Casino is no slouch, for sure, but just a step down for me.

I don't want to lob any criticism at a movie I haven't even finished, I don't think it's valid. The true reason is wrong place at the wrong time. First attempt was the DVD on a 17" screen over a decade ago, which did the movie no favors. The next two attempts were salted simply because I realized I was more in the mood for another genre of film at that particular time.

Gun to head, I find something oddly off-putting about the score. Not sure why! That, coupled with the way the movie unapologetically thrusts you into the narrative, I think it's something you've really got to be in the mood for. The 20 minutes I saw of The Godfather felt like an hour. That's just me though.

Most people love the wedding opening, some people don’t.  Feels like you’re jumping in midstream but it’s really just establishing who each of the important characters are and what their role is at the outset.  The plot doesn’t even really go into motion until after the first 20 minutes.

See this is available for pre-order, the 1976 version.   I always had a soft spot for it probably just because it’s the one I grew up with.  Also, I was as in love with Jessica Lange as the monkey was.

Haven't seen the film, but that's a nice looking steelbook! Which cut do you prefer?

Don't let @R1s1ngs0n hear you talk like that 🤣🤣🤣

But for what it's worth I am just as bad, I have been up late cut onto this film then found I can't get into it this is on the telly and maybe that's due to tiredness.

But think I have to be in the mood to watch them, infact I bought them last November in a sale they still sit in the cellophane if I'm honest. I will at some point sit down with the 3 and do a marathon but I have to be in the mood for this sort of films.

So at least there is 2 of us like this 🤣🤣🤣

When I watch them properly I may even be converted 👍👍👍

Not to keep beating a dead horse [head], but crazily enough, one of my motivating factors to watch The Godfather is curiosity surrounding the third entry. I've heard so many disparaging opinions about that movie, it's absolutely fascinating. Planning to watch the theatrical cut first, followed by the Coda re-edit.

If it's possible to discuss without any major spoilers, where do you guys land on the third entry?

I think the Coda edit is a big improvement.  It flows much better, getting earlier involvement in one of the subplots helps establish its importance.

It’s never going to stand beside 1 and 2 but it’s a solid movie and, like I said, the Coda edit is the one that I would recommend to people.

Well it’s hard to say.  I haven’t watched this since the 80s.  We didn’t have cable at home, so if I watched it there then I’m sure I would’ve seen the TV edit. BUT, I spent most of the summer at my grandparents’ house, and they had HBO which I just devoured when I was there.  I don’t remember where I watched it.  I suspect that I saw the TV edit, on one of the networks; it’s possible that I saw both.

Now I have to go look up and see what the difference is, that might tell me which one I saw.
