  2. This one was always one of my favorites.

You know Larson "came back" for a brief period a couple of years ago. He was experimenting with digital art and would put out a new panel every now and then. Unfortunately, I just checked his site again and it looks like he hasn't done it in a while. It was fun to see though - just as it was when Bill Watterson made a surprise reappearance in the Pearls Before Swine strip a little ways back

Did you have to pick it up at the store? It looks like Best Buy is having some trouble getting these out.

I love this edition too, I think they have done very well with this WWA edition, I can't wait to see how the prenium editions will be

    I don't think we'll get a premium...at least not anytime soon 😢

Not pictured: The Batman Begins replacement steel from Blufans. Thank you @DodgyDavefor facilitating! It's truly a great service when things don't quite show up as they should. Dave and @LeGonze are the two I've worked with most recently but thank you to all of you who help in these instances and also to those who get these into our hands to begin with!

  5. Morning all.

I've been traveling a bunch lately and haven't had much time to check in. Hope you all are well.

Also, I was in NYC and was able to check out The Way of Water at that huge IMAX theater while I was there. As a final reminder, I HIGHLY recommend you see it on the largest screen and in the best format possible. It will NOT play the same at home. This might be your last chance before Quantumania comes out!

  6. Alright, here we go for challenge 19:

    xz0YZ1N_d.jpg?maxwidth=520&shape=thumb&f

    1920s: The Gold Rush - because I can 😅

1930s: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - The one that started a huge empire...

1940s: It's a Wonderful Life - A Christmas tradition and one of my favorite films

1950s: Rear Window - my introduction to Hitchcock and thrillers in general

1960s: To Kill a Mockingbird - I remember watching this in school and it was probably the first film that really impacted me re: the real world.

1970s: Star Wars - the beginning of an obsession and the thing that my sister and I most have in common.

1980s: E.T. - my introduction to Spielberg. I watched this over and over as a kid.

1990s: Tommy Boy - another one of my favorites growing up. It's a comfort film at this point. I just wish Chris Farley was still around 😢

2000s: Mean Girls - I quote this film at least weekly.

2010s: La La Land - probably the first musical I actually enjoyed

2020s: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On - my biggest surprise of the decade so far. I thought it would be okay but I fell in love with it.

It is really hard for me to choose a favorite decade between the 70s, 80s, and 90s but if I'm forced to choose I would probably pick the 80s. So many classic films that defined my childhood came out during this time and I just have such happy memories enjoying them with friends and family.

I've been collecting movies on and off since the early 2000s. Unfortunately I sold off most if not all of my collection several times only to restart again. This current collection probably started around 2009 and I have been going strong since then.

  7. Well...I've been away for a lot longer than I would like to be. I hope to get back to my normal activity here sometime next week. Oh life...

    Just to quickly catch up:

    • I was not able to get to Sorcerer last week but it is prioritized on my "to watch" list.
    • Congrats @Fortis93 on the new rank!
    • @Baphomet  I hope you're on the other side of that illness and are feeling better 👍

I'm glad to see you all enjoyed Cinema Paradiso this week! I did manage to watch it again (in two parts 😅) for the first time in years. I was a bit nervous to approach it again for fear of being disappointed after holding it in such high esteem after watching it 20 years ago. Thankfully that was not the case.

I own the recent Arrow release which contains the Theatrical Cut (4k) and the Director's Cut (BR). I watched the theatrical cut due to my limited time of late. First I just want to say that the 4k transfer came out beautifully and I was really impressed with it. Next, I love how this story finds a way to approach so many different topics in such a poignant, comedic, and coherent fashion. Topics of friendship, loss, love, family, community, and history almost seamlessly intertwine with cinema as the centerpiece - something all of us here can certainly appreciate.

I wish I could put together a bit more but gathering my thoughts (and writing in general) does not come easily to me. I think that's why I review so few of the films I watch 😅

Once the movie shifted back to present day Toto, I couldn't help but think how much of a ressemblance it bears to Sergio Leone's masterpiece from 4 years prior, Once Upon A Time In America: the themes of regrets, the passage of time, lost love and friendships... even Morricone's score, brimming with romantic nostalgia (it's simply mind boggling, the number of Oscars that genius was robbed of).

I'm adding this to the list. Thanks for the recommendation!

ETA: I plan to watch the Director's cut of Cinema Paradiso some point soon. It seems to not be favored here but I read a few reviews elsewhere that enjoyed it. I now feel the desire to check this out myself and form my own opinion.

    Excellent choice.

    Which Version is on though?

    Theatrical or Directors Cut?

    Good question.

I can’t remember which I’ve seen. I’ve heard the theatrical has better pacing but that the director’s cut adds a bit of depth. I think first time viewers would be better off watching the theatrical.

Then again, I’m not sure many will have a choice if they rent.

@Veum it’s a couple of bucks cheaper through AppleTV if you have that.

Just checking in to see if you’ve had any thoughts for your choice on Thursday? I’m wondering if I’ll need to track it down. At least I know what it WON’T be….

    giphy.gif

But I am Very intrigued and looking forward to your choice though, I just  wasn’t sure if you were still deciding or simply surprising us?

I’ll stop now. I just love it when someone else is passionate about NOT liking a movie. Sometimes I feel all alone in that. 😁👍🏼

Hey - all is fine here. I've just been super busy. Thanks for checking in!

I wouldn't say I have a passionate hatred toward Superbad BUT I do have other films in that category (Spring Breakers comes to mind) so you are definitely not alone 👍.

I've had a film in mind for a while but I wasn't quite ready to share. It will require a rental for US members who don't already own the film (I can't comment on availability outside of the US). I wanted to avoid that but I can't think of any other film at the moment. Plus, I think this one will be a nice change of pace from what we've watched and what we already know is to come. Although it does make me wonder if it may be a little too light for some of you.

This is a classic and honestly, imo, a must-watch for any lover of film. I haven't seen it in almost 20 years myself so I'm interested to see if I like it as much as I did the first time I watched. Anyway, I'd like to recommend....Cinema Paradiso.

One more thought: I know a lot of us are probably thinking ahead to the slipcovers for the next two movies. For me, though, I'd prefer to let the artist find a groove that works for each movie, rather than working to design something for the first one that will serve as a template for the next two.

I agree and I hope we're able to keep this same artist throughout 👍

  11. Thanks for sharing, @ksosk! I like this artist's style and it's clear they put some thought into the composition. Does this mean we have the numbers to move on?

There is a lot to like here and I'm happy that this is our starting point. That being said, I agree with @Intentcoin in that I feel it is a little busy for the front. I love the composition and the themes but I see that general idea working better on the back panel. Leave the front simple with a few main characters and a strong title.

I like what we have going on but I don't think it's a good look to have both sides completely plastered with characters.

  13. Hello all,

I've had to step away a bit because things have been hectic but I was able to watch The Way Back the other day.

I'd probably place it a little above average with a 3/5. The pacing was a bit off and there were several scenes where I felt it moved on too quickly without enough information or context to move the story forward AND have what transpired make sense. I may have knocked it down to a 2.5 if not for my own personal history with cancer which made certain scenes hit really hard. I actually needed a bit of recovery time afterward as it stirred up some memories.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Sorcerer!

Good morning everyone! We finally got a cca (city carrier assistant) in our office that hasn’t quit, and actually wants to work. It’s been almost 16 months! This allows me to finally take some days off here and there. Starting with today.

  15. I'll probably finish up my Season 1 rewatch today.

I'm glad I revisited because there was a bunch of stuff that I completely forgot about. The Hera/Twi'lek storyline is probably the best of the season. What is with these recent Star Wars series saving their best writing for the episodes that barely include the titular character?

And when are we going to get a decent look at the Pykes? They almost have a Boba Fett-like mystery about them in that they seem to be universally feared/respected. When are we going to actually SEE why? That brutality we saw from the Empire in Andor, give me some of that with the Pykes.

Anyway...I'm getting excited to finally move on to Season 2.
