  1. Well, I was booking my park reservation and saw that I am blocked out tomorrow...

I won't be in the area again this week so we'll have to wait for that one 😢. Here's some other stuff:

    Challenge #22: Adaptation

    J9w8FPd.jpg

The Princess Bride and Winnie the Pooh are probably my favorites here. This edition of Princes Bride is beautifully bound and has quite a few well done illustrations that make for a nice touch. Winnie the Pooh always caters to my sentimental side. Interestingly, Disney made some good choices with their adaptation that work quite well in the transition from print to the screen. I don't usually find that to be the case.

I'm sure several people could complete this challenge using Disney alone.

    Thanks for the challenge, @Reagh

  2. Not sure if any of you consider reviews spoilers (not specifics but a general consensus on if a film is good or bad) but (re: Ant-man)...

    Spoiler

The early reviews for Quantumania are not good at all. Like Thor 2 bad...

A few months ago I commented on how some collector's editions that are already 15-20 years old are beginning to see the cardboard they are made of degrade; even if you take good care of them, even if you are careful. Little by little.

Yesterday I was selecting DVD films for Challenge #20, and I found a surprising case: a Cervic branded DVD case that, when I picked it up by hand, despite being well cared for on an IKEA DVD shelf, in a place away from the sun,... it was almost rotten; even being hard plastic... you squeezed it with two fingers and it broke like crunchy cardboard, easily, without the need to use force.

    20230213-210854.jpg

I had never seen anything like it.

Solving it was easy: change that plastic case for another one, but... this made me think that soon we will start to value -and a lot- the quality of the materials of those fabulous editions we buy. And how we take care of them.

That retailers use high quality materials, with a good finish, and that we have protective cases, will be a must for any collector.

Interesting that you brought this up as I was thinking about this recently. I was looking at my WeET Spider-man 2 FS that has the holofoil Doc Oc tentacle wrapping onto the spine from the back panel and wondering if the holofoil will develop a crack or crease over time. To be honest, it's the kind of thing that makes me hesitate about purchasing any more premiums. This is such an expensive hobby and it makes me cringe to think part of this collection (and the value) essentially disintegrate over a relatively short period of time.

I've been tempted to just collect amarays as a result. Yeah, that plastic case might degrade but it's easily replaceable like you said. All would. be fine so long as the disc itself doesn't suffer.

But a half hour spent in the Star Wars universe with an average show is better than a lot of things.

    I'll drink to that.

This Vice Admiral Rampart/Kamino storyline has made things a little more interesting. It actually seems like the series is moving forward and not just following the Batch around on random missions.

Great pickup! I still have yet to see any of those films despite a fondness for Brendan Frasier.

I'm pretty sure indecision is behind 80% of my one clicks!

Yeah, my experience of that moment as well.  The line between attraction and fear can be thin, but the filmmaker didn't give us any clue that she was feeling that desire, other than the fact she kept coming over to the house.  I sort of passed it off as some sort of cultural thing I didn't get, maybe some clues that Austrians would get that I didn't.  But def felt out of left field.

I think it could have been handled a little better.

I didn't look much in to her being there because she was doing that before he arrived. Each interaction with her was negative and I took her expression as more "what's up with this guy" and not in a "hmm he's interesting" kind of way but more of a "what a jerk" kind of way.

    And...

    Spoiler

if she only wanted to essentially sperm-jack someone..why him? Dude is a jerk who, in his father's eyes, had not really amounted to anything.

Very weird and I found it a bit jarring. It took me out of it a bit. But anyway, that's what is fun about groups like these. I like to see the perspective of others.

  9. Challenge 21: Love is in the Air

Wow - this challenge was harder than I initially thought. I don't have many editions with just the two on the front but here goes...

    KYGLE4m.jpg

    1: Cinderella - KimchiDVD

2: La La Land - UK steel

    3: Wall-e - Blufans

    4: It's a Wonderful Life - Best Buy

5: Beauty and the Beast - Blufans

I'm not a huge fan of romantic films but I did really enjoy La La Land. That one really surprised me because I also don't historically care for musicals either. But now I have three separate editions of the film on my shelf, ha. That being said, I think Wall-e is my favorite. His love is so innocent, pure, and...unexpected. The little guy even has a bit of a romance with life in general. It's just such a beautiful film all around and truly deserving of its recent Criterion release.

Thanks for the challenge, @Blu Magic Ray!!

I'll be honest and admit that this is rubbing me the wrong way.

While I collect all of CMA's releases, this is making me suspect of them in a bad way, and now I too wonder about my 'preorders' and orders that have not shipped yet.

I hope they don't keep this up, I won't just sit back and watch forever.

I will never order direct from CM for this very reason. Same with FAC. I’ve thought about dropping them altogether.

If they can’t produce a product within a reasonable timeframe or provide clear (and honest) communication about delays then they don’t deserve my money.

Nice write up.  Very well said.  I’m curious which scene/storyline, if you don’t mind sharing.

    It was the scene where…

    Spoiler

The police officer’s wife invites the main character over. I see why she would want to do that with someone but the choice of that moment with that guy was a little odd to me.

If just didn’t go along with what we knew about the character. Some might say that’s the point and it’s now introducing a new character trait but I just found it abrupt and confusing.

  12. Watched Revanche last night.

I enjoyed it and I have to second @Baphomet on it being a slow burn. The plot is relatively simple but doesn’t exactly end up the way one would think - which is always appreciated.

That being said, the pacing, camerawork, and nuanced acting made this film for me. The director held many shots longer than one would expect, leaving you the opportunity to feel the burden carried by the characters. I personally found it extremely effective in this sense but also in providing a bit of suspense.

I think the film greatly lends itself to post-viewing discussion regarding life choices and how we approach and react to the consequences of those choices.

I gave it a 3.5 out of 5. There is one scene/storyline that I struggled with. Not so much its possibility as much as how it transpired in the film. I think it could have been handled a little better.

    Thanks for the recommendation, @hal56!

Same issue here! Just checked and alas, no subtitles. I’m using an AppleTV, maybe it’s device specific?

    I’m watching via Roku.

I let the film run a bit and it looks like Russian (the first language spoken in the film) is not subtitled but German is automatically subtitled a little later on. Weird.

Those who have watched, am I going to miss a lot by not understanding Russian?

@hansreinhardt Enjoy Cinema Paradiso! I’m sitting here with a Coke and some pretzels but that popcorn has me jealous!
