No millennials at my company. As a matter of fact I’m probably one of the youngest there 😅. That presents a whole different set of challenges 🙄

@deckard99

I’m use to hearing about companies trying to push the older workers out & bring in new blood. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a company fully staffed with just their seasoned workers. Are there plans at your company to hire young?

Nobody is being pushed out (which is nice for a change) but some are starting to retire and we are trying to modernize so younger talent (like me!) is being brought in to drive change. I’m new and really happy to be there as it’s a great place to work with loads of opportunity.

I keep hearing that there is only 3.5% unemployment but the reality is that most of those jobs are minimum wage or close to it. For me and lots of people I know it’s been a real struggle to find good jobs and there is loads of competition. Most jobs I applied for had 100+ applicants on the first day. This trend has been going on for many years though and I don’t think it will change unless we bring more production back to the USA. The coronavirus has exposed the weakness of supply chains across the globe so hopefully there will be more balance in the future. Not smart to put all our eggs in one basket.

It’s nice to hear when someone enjoys where they work. I’m happy for you, because working in a healthy environment makes for great days. I’m thankful for my job, because it gives me a chance to save more & buy most of the goodies I want, but the environment isn’t as healthy as it could be. If the company could pull it off tomorrow they would replace us all with machines.

Keep your resume updated and make lots of connections! You never know when, but change will happen whether you like it or not. It happened to me.

Yep this is unfortunately very true. It’s misleading to just give the percentage without giving more detail, but our news outlets do it all the time when quoting percentages on any given topic.

Depending on where you live it’s difficult to even find the low paying jobs. I remember a few years ago being laid off & watching a documentary on people living in Washington DC. These people where living in the local parks because they couldn’t afford housing & most of them had jobs, but they wasn’t making enough so they was homeless. It was very upsetting to watch.

It isn’t smart but I don’t know if the trend will stop because company owners seem to only have their minds set on profit increase. Having steady revenue year after year isn’t enough.

@deckard99,

I’ve always said, why the younger folk do not start out with a trade school and not college 🤔... this is what everyone needs anyways in everyday life, I.e. the plumber, the electrician, etc. ...food for thought!😉

This is true & it’s definitely something I think about all the time. I accept that the company wants things to be different. It happens all the time especially if you work in a area where technology is always advancing. Companies save more money the less employees they have doing a task. I don’t take it personally but I do wish that companies also thought more about the overall impact of their decisions to make cuts.

I totally agree that it’s a mistake to push all HS students into college. Those not suited would be much better off in trade schools and would have less student loan debt to boot. I actually think it’s starting to head that way as people now recognize that student loan debt is out of control.

@Veum

This would be a better path, but then student loan debt companies would lose some & they wouldn’t want that. It would also be helpful if basic understanding of how money works in the world was taught. Credit, Savings, Taxes, StockMarket etc are not top priority classes in High Schools even though it’s very important to know & understand all these subjects as an adult.

@Hollywood E Rock,

Yeah, I was never taught anything like that in high school and I had no clue what or where I’d go in my life (although looking back I did/do have a “higher power” looking after me!) & I tried heating/air & it was not my “cup of tea”, so I ended up being your daily, friendly Postman!💕

I could write a book with all the tragedies in my life, however I do not want to bring anyone down!😏

Oh, I'm just here for the GBs 🤣🤣

I'd like to hang out in the english room more, but I don't have much time between work and MP duties. Even now I'm doing some work to get caught up for Monday.

p.s. I have a very good friend who works for the postal service. One day I'm hoping to get him here on MP but he has a lot of stuff going on at the moment (got married, first child on the way, doing major house construction)

From my observations it seems like the people who have a purpose or feel like they have a purpose turn out doing okay for themselves. You for example have your faith that gives you purpose and you are doing just fine even with all the tragedy you have experienced. You probably should look into writing a book. Pretty sure it would be helpful to those who read it.

@Hollywood E Rock people saying about changing to robots over people is soo true on many fronts.

my last job i left because of bad hours and made a personal lifestyle choice in the end. was basically production robotics engineer. i was employed for overseeing the machines running much as possible and all maintenance, programming up etc. but i came back from holiday from florida in the summer during a heatwave here we had 30c odd and had to go back to work on a friday saturday and sunday night shifts and thought to myself what the hell was i doing, said same to my wife and she burst into tears about it all and she had never got upset with and shift work i had done before. 8 years on straight nights in past.

anyway this shift pattern had got to her 7 day continental. so at that moment i knew i had to change jobs. which i did for her no questions whatsoever.

so i started looking had a new job lined up within 2 weeks lucky for me i was still within my probation period just and on 1 weeks notice which was about to change up to 1 months notice. just because big company had got me thru a specialist agency 6 months and then there own 6 month company period of probation. anyway i moved more or less within 2 week of coming back. they where also surprised that i had a job to goto so quickly. so someone was looking down on me straight into a straight days job with a half day friday.

my wife said i was soo jammy for the half day friday, i just said it was just luck.

lucky for me my engineering skill is high enough that i was in demand.

but as they say things are meant to happen for reasons, whatever that may be. but training is key all your working life. has helped improve my job after job.

and i count my blessings for that.

but family is always first, work has to fit around me abit now. cost me a little bit too money wise but not too much a drift.

and god do i feel better for it.

so edward my one free piece of advice train as much as you can it will help you in ways you can't fully appreciate yet and climb up that tree. i do suspect you will end up head and shoulders above others if you keep going the way you are currently, from my own point view.

you sound like you care about your job which is always 90% of the battle. the other 10% is improving yourself along the way.

and as you say lazy idiots around you that dont care make you stand out in the end by there own laziness in the end.

it worked for me along the way.

my only slight issue i have now and again is they occasionally send me up london to sort issues out are field engineers can't but that is very now and again.

but i dont mind that gets me out the workshop now and again. but i try help out when needed. keeps me in with the big boss which is where it really counts:D

all the best
