  1. New arrivals!!

So the edition that brought me to this forum and amazing community has finally arrived The Goonies! On a side note I ended up ordering the OC direct from Cinemuseum when I saw it back in stock for the third or fourth time 😓. Wouldnt be surprised if I got the last numbered OC. Got the notice of dispatch today!

I'm new to this hobby, but I really only plan on buying premiums for my absolute favorite films. Pretty much all the Nolan films and perhaps some other sci-fi classics I hold to high esteem. I'm more than willing to pay a reasonable extra amount for these via eBay, Mercari, Discord, etc. That's just the reality of the situation.

I'm still going to try as a Regular member, but if it's something you're passionate about I think it's good to set an expectation of just getting it via third party. If you're going in thinking you're absolutely getting it, there's only room for disappointment.

I can see though if you're collecting like EVERYTHING, then it would be stressful as all hell.

    Well this sounds awfully familiar!

I started with steelbooks from zavvi, promised myself I was just gonna get my top 20 favorite movies or so and only in 4k. Didnt really go according to plan...

I even wrote a piece documenting how it all went downhill. Good luck! I'll check back on you in about a year to see how you're doing :D. May the force be with you!

    ACT I

It all started when I came across some news about the Titans of Cult release for Mad Max (don't really recall where I saw it). This was back in June 2020, with the pandemic in its early stages and working from home,  left me with a lot more spare time and probably found it while checking some movie news on some random website. At this point a thought came to my mind, the one of having my top 20 movies in steelbook to display on a shelf. It sounded like a great idea since I LOVE MOVIES!

Hence started the hunt for my favorite stuff. First stop Zavvi. Looking for the Titans of Cult release of Mad Max led me there. In my head I had some rules I had to follow on this endeavour:

    1.  I was gonna stick with my top 20 movies and no more.
    2.  Only purchase 4k editions (meaning I would have to skip some of my real top 20s due to not having a 4k release yet)

    Pretty simple rules right? PleasingSoreDeer-max-1mb.gif.bb36fa8270f81dea9aabb632eefaece0.gif

I started snoopin around Zavvi's steelbook section, I saw Stallone's Lock Up and I thought to myself, weeeell definitely not in your top 20 but it's a pretty good action flick and kinda cheap. Kept scrolling, and along with Lock Up also got Gremlins, Inception and Alien along with the Titans of Cult Mad Max. Inception, Alien and Mad Max are all serious contenders to my top 20 but at this point I didn't really care anymore, you like it you buy it friend! Rule number 1 one broken 👍! Well done...

And to make my life easier Zavvi had just started putting out the Star Wars saga. I go like, damn the original trilogy is a classic, I'll get just those and ignore the rest 👀

I had just discovered my OCD with incomplete collections...

    ACT II

Shortly after the first zavvi purchase I found the steelbooks subreddit, and looking at all those people sharing shiny pictures of their new steelbooks just made my addiction more severe. The steelbook library kept growing and soon I was all over ebay trying to find the treasured editions for my favorite movies. That second rule of getting only 4k releases had also gone down the drain quite fast...

    IMG_3342.thumb.jpg.0c37c6e32a26bff6f5b357d933773d65.jpg

Double dipping never even crossed my mind

    IMG_3343.thumb.jpg.c251ab444cf887ef7e11a60127fd52e5.jpg

Late July or early August, Zavvi announces the steelbook design for Goonies. I was super disappointed with the design... Some days later in the subreddit I see a post of another edition for Goonies with the original poster art, it was the Cinemuseum WEA. I was like I gotta have this, and immediately asked where I could get it, I was completely unaware of the premium stuff back then. The guy who made the post, felixmontoya92 (if you are reading this, forever grateful), he pointed me to Media Psychos Group Buys. And that was when I found this beautiful place :), where we all share the same love for collecting premium physical media.

    HELLO MEDIA PSYCHOS, GOODBYE MONEY

    ACT III

So I start navigating the forum, figuring out my way around and I eventually join a couple of GBs, Goonies wasn't open yet. I guess I joined The Matrix and Scarface from Manta at the time.

But this was a whole new world for me, after going through all the retailers masterlists, I was like what have I been missing out!! At the same time I was thinking, ok I really gotta take it easy on these premium stuff because they are expensive...

One thing I promised myself I wouldnt do was to start buying MCU premiums. 23 movies and counting would just be too much... thor-of-course.gif.ec22eface21df98ca020dc2e17570ccc.gif

    Then this happened

    IMG_3345.thumb.jpg.b8fdcc7172d121f288a751d740f484af.jpg

One other funny thing was when I came across One Cicks I was confused. What are these? I tought... Wait so people buy several copies of the same movie with the same steelbook in it 🤔?? No F****** way!

    IMG_3344.thumb.jpg.f73744b68adf87c771a437623cc066eb.jpg

And for the great FINALE here's what I got over the past month...

    IMG_3357.thumb.jpg.c10e3649141bda5625e330011c9bded1.jpg

This was it, the story of my descent deep into the rabbit hole.

    TL;DR PREMIUMS NOT DRUGS!

    Really sad on two fronts:

    (i) Nils having to do all this... so much effort for us (we are not deserving of)!

(ii) FAC insist on doing things this way (just read Dodgy Dave's post).

I also understand the Finance limitations / considerations for many members.

I have a suggestion (it may be a bit left field), but thought I would throw it out there. I will try and give a numeric illustration

I see Mils has tagged 20 UK members: and he has 2 of all three releases left [ 2 x 3]

Let's say in total, these cost £500 (just an example).

    • Can all 20 members agree to split the cost £25 each
    • MP can just send an invoice to each of us for £25 each (final figure once prices are known)

Benefits: This way we can fulfil our Hub allocation

Now, as to the ownership of the editions:

    • We can have 6 raffles [2 x 3]  for the 20 UK members only
    • 6 different members are guaranteed to win at least one edition (so e.g. if a member has already won something, he is out of the remaining raffles)

Benefits: MP gets to keep their chance of future FAC allocations

Winning members can always sell on Ebay (for more than £25 hopefully)!

If a member ends up with nothing, at worst the member will lose is £25

Think of the invoice as an MP "FAC fund"

I will be up for this proposal

"Necessity is the mother of invention"

Great idea @Parzival. I would totally be in if this were to happen.

And also starting my last effort for France HUB. Tagging a few members who showed interest for FAC in the past. I have 3 of all 3 releases on your HUB left at the moment.

    @Ryve @fonchino @Lami @Jaksu @Fredrik @Konan @Cy1 @BlackWolf @juveunu

Ups, that is less than I thought. If you only want Backdraft, go ahead request that, can't promise it until I know if I get requests that want all releases or not.

    Thanks all.

I would gladly help out if I knew that this would fix the issue for the long term, however I can see this happening again the next month and in the one after that (on top of that I have overextended a bit on what I've been signing up for). This business model from FAC seems to be unsustainable long term if you ask me.

I'm mostly an HDzeta, mantalab, Weet collector, the only items I would pick up from filmarena would be titles that have never been done before or titles that are really dear to me, as happened with Predator.

This problem can not be played out every month or so on MP. It can’t keep falling on Nils to beg members to take copies.
Next month is just as bad, and FA are not going to change their plan just to suit MPs members.
I suggest that you pull the plug on FAC GBs on MP. Save yourself all this hassle every month. You don’t need it and MP/John can’t keep soaking up the cost of copies that picky members don’t want.

Unfortunately I need to agree with DodgyDave here, if these GBs are giving you a really hard time and is causing more trouble than benefiting the forum, I would pull the plug and anyone wanting those hot releases would need to try their luck directly on the website or bite the bullet on the secondary market.

Main reason is that I find them to be nothing more than a gimmick that 95% of the time doesn't add anything to the package visually or thematically.

I need a cup of chamomile tea right now.

As to why I love lentis (especially HDzeta), I really cant describe, sure it's a gimmick as Eli puts it, but between lentis and embossed covers with UV print (which I'm actually not a fan of) I much prefer the looks of a well made lenti.

Oh ok. Yeah I totally meant it as a suggestion.

I believe the administration is always open to suggestions, however giving the tier membership preference based solely on those who participate more GBs would not be fair IMO.

For example there may be people that participate a lot of GBs but rarely post on the forum. Members who keep the forum alive are also very important as they help the community, keep discussions alive and basically make this a special place where collectors can come and hang out with each other :)

Also there might be some people who participate all GB's just to sell everything on ebay at higher prices afterwards. Do you really think it would be fair for this person to be given higher priority over a passionate collector who only gets into GBs for a retailer he collects from?

Factoring all the criteria to make a 'preference' list to whom would be the first picks for aquiring a tiered membership would be a very time consuming task and unfair for who would be doing it because in the end there will alway be someone who was treated unfairly.

Just my 2 cents on the topic :)

I'll share more going forward, but below is my current movie wall. It's still missing my DVDs, TV shows, and most of my anime collection.

Anyway, I'm excited to be part of a community of like-minded people and will contribute as best I can!

We have closed this GB (same as Scarface), since it has been open for almost a year without any new info. We think it is better to open a brand new GB when concrete info is provided by Manta Lab.

Everyone who is still interested then, can join the new GB. We will no longer open any Manta Lab GB in advance, that means as soon as one is launched members should be fast to join.

Sorry again @R1s1ngs0n for all the GB update work, oh damn I can be sorry for myself to, another GB I did not have to build 😭
