Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".

 

However, from what I can tell, "woke" has since become a code word used by right-wing lunatics who are afraid of seeing any sort of minority representation in their media and/or education. If a piece of fiction or US history showcases Blacks, women, gays, transgenders, bisexuals, and literally anything other than straight white male heteronormativity, it's considered "woke."

@Veum, I'm genuinely curious... respectfully, how were you ever able to tolerate Star Trek in the first place? Every show has been pretty progressive, fostering inclusivity, optimism, and respect. I mean, there are countless examples of this. Most obvious: TOS, you had an African-American woman on the bridge, as well as Russians & Japanese folks, in the 60's!

 

Have you seen the TNG episode "The Outcast"? Curious to know what your thoughts were on that one. Anyway, I probably wouldn't suggest any current era Trek to you, stick with TOS and TNG.

You "read" that it's "woke" so you won't watch it.  Pathetic.

 

Do you not have the ability to decide for yourself?

 

Are you not in favor of racial inclusivity and tolerance the same way I am tolerant of people of ALL political beliefs on ANY part of the right/left spectrum SO LONG as they don't tell me how I should feel/speak or believe or try to restrict those activities?

 

Being closed minded is a real shame and I *hope* that doesn't apply to you no matter what your political beliefs may be.

 

...and yes "woke" has become a dog whistle code word for the right to signify their belief that a piece of media, politician or corporation are *shudder* actually in favor of that sort of open-mindedness and inclusivity.

 

For shame.
