The 4K Blu-Ray provides a magnificent experience for lovers of the film, and is a massive jump compared to previous releases. Now, if we could only get a 4K Blu-Ray for Jackie Brown and The Hateful Eight...

Supposedly there are a bunch of Tarantino releases coming this year:

Per Digital Bits here, but I’ve read it in other places as well.  I’d love Django in 4K, but obviously Kill Bill and Hateful 8 would look great too.  I got lucky and the 70mm Hateful 8 roadshow came near me and I got to go, great looking movie even if it’s mostly indoors and near the bottom of my personal Tarantino list.

Dear god, I hope so. Having all of those in 4K would be wonderful!

Thank you for this! I am starting to get a bit impatient with no announcement of Barry Lyndon in 4K. Hands down my favorite Kubrick film, and it's criminal that it has yet to happen with how breathtaking the cinematography and art style is.

For some reason Django Unchained never resonated with me, as a matter of fact I took my Target copy back for a refund many moons ago. 😒

One last thing about The Godfather, and I don't mean to monopolize the conversation about this one topic, but I have a bone to pick with the editing. There's one thing that really jarred me. It's the scene where the five families meet. They cut to a shot of this one guy for approximately 22 frames, and it completely took me out of the scene. I thought for a second there was an error, like my player skipped. Anyone else notice this? If it was a style that was carried throughout, it would make more sense to me, but here it just feels like a mistake.

Ok, so gangster movies.  Going to mostly be a list of movies that are pretty much what every American guy in 2024 would pick, but there are a few older ones that I like.  Not necessarily posting these in order of preference, but the obvious ones are at the top.

Goodfellas:  I mean, it’s just difficult to make a movie any better than this one, in any genre.  I can’t even imagine how many times I’ve seen it.  If I walked by the TV now and it was on, I’d sit down and watch the rest of it.

Godfather 1 &2: the foundation of the modern gangster movie, the measuring stick

Casino: went to the theater expecting Goodfellas 2 and felt a bit disappointed the first time.  Now I love it; very much its own thing.  Harder to watch than Goodfellas; the people are more obviously terrible and . . . man, that cornfield scene. (The 4K transfer is amazing btw)

Heat:  also seen a thousand times.  I don’t think the 4K looks great though, wish they’d take another pass at it.

Miller’s Crossing:  the dialogue in this movie is just incredible.  The early 90s have to be the peak of this genre, btw.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle;  feels like what a real life of crime would be like, at the working class level.  Mitchum is amazing.  Hell, everyone in it is.

The Killing:  when I was a foolish young man, I thought of this as a lesser Kubrick film.  Now I know that it’s a superior crime film.

The Killers:  the Don Siegel, Lee Marvin version.  Sets up what bastards the leads are right off the bat, then gives you villains that are even worse.  President Reagan, Angie Dickinson.

Sexy Beast: speaking of bastards, Ben Kingsley is one of the most unique and fearsome in any movie.

Key Largo: the combination of the hurricane bearing down and the excellent dialogue really works for me.

Layer Cake:  great casting all around, real tension.  I was so happy when they picked Craig to be Bond because I loved him so much in this.

Apologies for the lengthy post, I really like gangster movies!

God, Heat is a masterpiece. Hands down the greatest shootout scene in cinema history IMO.

I also felt the same way when I saw Casino the first time, expecting GF2. For a time I wished Scorsese had employed a different cast for Casino, because it just felt odd seeing DeNiro and Pesci on screen together outside of GoodFellas. I no longer feel that way, and love Casino for what it is. Don Rickles is perfectly cast. Stellar 4K disc too, I agree!

yes I remember hearing certain law enforcement agencies dept's etc actually still to this day use the shootout scene to teach what not to do and how to respond force on force. heat overall is a brilliant movie and when I heard a sequel is being done I immediately got that oh boy I hope they don't mess this up but does it really need a sequel feeling.

I got a promotional email from Diabolik and one of the movies on offer is Goodbye Uncle Tom.  Never heard of it, went to IMDb, there’s a Roger Ebert review.  The opening line of the review.

“They have finally done it: Made the most disgusting, contemptuous insult to decency ever to masquerade as a documentary.”

Almost makes a person want to see it.
