To be fair you're right about Nils's review, but you both are off in your agreement about The Riddler

No we're spot on with that 🤣. The complete interpretation of the character and the performance given from Dano, everything was wrong about it 😁

Not only are we not off, but I dare say he’s by far the weakest 21st century Batman villain.

It was disappointing that the character didn't have enough face to face moments with Batman, but besides that I thought he was good.

He had strong motivations for his actions, & his purpose to the story contributed to Batmans arc in the film.

I don't believe a good villain (or any character for that matter) needs to have a lot of screen time or face-to-face moments with the hero in order to be effective or memorable.

It may sound biased coming from a Bond fan such as myself but take for instance the dinner scene between Bond and Dr. No - that scene comes very late in the movie and doesn't even last 5 minutes. It's also the first time we're seeing the villain but it's more than enough to establish him as one of the greatest villains in cinema because the performance is brilliant and the dialogue expertly written.

I don't have an issue with the Riddler's motivations, I'm criticizing the performance itself. Dano's Eli Sunday in There Will Be Blood was a much more interesting and disturbing antagonist than this bland, generic and not at all scary weirdo he gives us here.

Even though he's not a villain the best example that comes to mind is Glenn Ford's performance as Jonathan Kent in "Superman".

He's in the movie for barely 5 minutes out of its 140-150 minute runtime and leaves such a lasting impression that hangs over the entire movie.

It's one of many reasons why it ranks high amongst my favourite superhero movies of all time.

And The Dark Sloth is my favourite Batman movie.

That’s a movie I’d definitely pay to watch.

A few tag lines:

”He sleeps during the day and... well, he sleeps all day”

“Whenever a crime is committed he’s always the last on the scene”

“Criminals beware! Once the Dark Sloth is on your trail you got 24 years to get out of the city”
