• ZOOLANDER - I was in New York shooting fashion and beauty at the time this film was made (in the Meatpacking district).  Many of the club kids I hung out with were used as extras and small parts.   It's like a ridiculous fictional home movie for me, if Ben Stiller made your home movies.

• 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY - The only truly convincing representation of what lies on the other side, imho.  Quiet is a powerful character.

• MULHOLLAND DRIVE - Lynch is our only true poet filmmaker, and this is his Sonnet 18.  Or maybe it's Finnegans Wake, and like James Joyce, Lynch is just laughing his ass off at us. 

• BEAT STREET - Another movie that feels somewhat like a home movie. Instead of the South Bronx, I was a boy living the birth of hip hop in Miami.

• RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK - My mother worked in the mall.  So, I wandered the mall for 6 hours while she worked.  I snuck in the movie theater and saw this film dozens of times.  It is the paradigm for all action movies.  And . . . Amy Farah Fowler is WRONG, without Indy they never find the ark in the first place.

• THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE - Oh man, this is not the best Cassavetes movie, but it is one I love.  I used to shoot scenes from this as exercises with my acting classmates.  It is my noir crime comfort blanket.

Thanks for your thoughts buddy,  yeah, I'm out on this.  I think @Gary K described my experience above, I'm skeptical, and the design itself is less than inspiring, add to that the price, as you say, and I'm okay with letting this one go.  

Every MP GB feels like an opportunity, so it's hard to let them go by sometimes.  There are always more and more and more to come.

I am so indifferent on this one.  I know it’s extremely limited.  And FOMO.  Anyone want to chime in and say why your excited for this one, push me over the edge?

#002 The Way Back (2020) @Fortis93

After somewhat of a stressful week, this was a great movie to sit down to on a Friday night.  Thanks @Fortis93 for the great selection.   We enjoyed it and it was nice to get a competently crafted dose of optimism.

Is it trope-y, predictable, typical, screenwriting 101?  Yes, in many ways.  But, I didn't care.  I just disappeared for a while in what cinema can do well . . . distract and entertain.

I played basketball at a large urban high school and this felt very very familiar, so that element of the script was charming and nostalgic for me, it reminded me of some old friends, for sure.  (The scripted reason Jack never played basketball was because of his father. The real reason? Affleck is OBVIOUSLY not a basketball player at all. 🤣)

The alcohol portion was, as others pointed out, treated as a plot device, it was largely functional.  There was no feigning to deal with it in any significant way.  But, this style of film is designed to do exactly that (and why many don't like it): create and overcome obstacles in an oversimplified way for the sake of an overt message, cinematic form, and entertainment value.  And, this film did exactly that in the style we all know (and some of us love).

My gripe with this movie is far more with the cinematography than anything else.  The amount of unmotivated lens flare was absurd.  And it wasn't even pretty or well used lens flare.  If you have time to count the aperture blades in the lens flare on screen (which is a great clue to what lenses are being used, btw) then, you have a problem.  

And the servo zooms, sporadic and often interrupting to a scene, not digging that at all.

I'm okay with this type of camera move if you do it in the first 10 minutes in the way it will be used throughout the film.  This sets my expectations of the visual style.  It's obviously used many many many times effectively in action films, Bourne movies for example.  But here it's inconsistent and unnecessary. 

The worst example happened in the scene when Jack and Angela are alone on a patio at the restaurant and Angela tells him she is seeing someone (if you watch on a small screen, like a computer, it will not be nearly as noticeable as on a larger TV).

In this scene, the servo zooms feel forced, distracting from the intimacy of the scene, when the intent was the opposite, to create intimacy by moving closer.  I would have used a bungie cam and drifted in to create intimacy and not been hard on the zoom ring or the dolly push.  Sometimes in this scene, they actually cut in to the middle of the zoom, which is even stranger.

My guess is that the DP sold the director on this technique in pre-pro as "bringing energy" to the camera (which is usually what I say 😆).  This scene may have been an early setup in the production.  The director realized it wasn't working in the way it was intended, and so they backed off of it for the rest of the film (although it is used on some wide shots).  In post, they had no clean takes of this scene without the zoom/push in.   They broke the cardinal rule of cinematography imho: the viewer should never be aware of the camera, but I could feel the 1st AC pushing the servo button throughout this movie.  Ugh.

Also, I'm not sure why they used anamorphic on such a small movie, a lot of empty screen real estate, and not in a good design-y, negative space way.

Vivaldi wrote over 500 concertos, and yes, they are all very similar in form and style.  A few more would have been fine with me.  And, a few more redemption films in the legacy of what has become a standard cinematic form?  I'm fine with that too.

Thanks for the info.  Yeah, I zoomed in and saw some texture there.  You seem pretty pleased with the result, though, correct?  They look great on screen.  From watching YT videos, it's the folding that is a huge deal, I have a creaser so I should be okay.  What are you using for adhesive?  Thanks!

Thanks for sharing @Veum.  I had no idea how close they were, I read up on them a bit, and as you prob know, they had a special relationship.  This is moving, not quite my cup of tea, but I get it, especially today on her tragic death.

The only Elvis album anyone needs is From Elvis in Memphis, imho.  After years languishing in Hollywood, he finally started to embrace his southern soul roots and get back to making music.  Deciding to use the house band at American Sound Studio, known as The Memphis Boys, was the best decision Elvis ever made.  Those guys could play.

My fav song from those sessions didn't even make the original album : Stranger in My Own Home Town

This footage is amazing.  Absolutely amazing.  I wasn't born then, but man I would have loved to have been there.
