I think there’s a decent chance Smit-McPhee takes Best Supporting over Kotsur

Seemed that way a few weeks ago but Kotsur has won every head to head award and Power of the Dog has underperformed (relatively). Plus Kotsur is fantastic in CODA, he’s older so he likely won’t get another role like this, and the academy loves to create moments and Troy and his interpreter have been great on the award circuit so far. He’s definitely the favorite now.

  2. Another data point as we get closer to the Oscars:

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/bafta-awards-2022-winners-list-1235109906/

Looks like three of the actor awards are more or less locked in (with Kotsur joining Smith and Debose). I’d still expect Campion to win best director and Power of the Dog to take best picture. Dune is likely to dominate the technical/craft categories and Best Actress is completely wide open with no real standout as far as I can tell.

I watched part of clone wars and not watched rebels. Will have to catch up on those.

I really loved Rebels. The Twilight of the Apprentice arc in Rebels is, in my opinion, the best Star Wars storytelling ever (across all films and series). Clone Wars has a lot of filler episodes, you can probably find lists of important episodes to watch to understand certain important arcs.

The trailer looks inspiring so hopefully it's a good series. I actually enjoyed the bobba fett series especially the ending. Hopefully with this series we get an insight into darth vader too.

Have you watched the animated series (Clone Wars and Rebels)? There seem to be a lot of references in the trailer and those shows give a ton of background and insight into Anakin, Obi Wan, and the others.

I've been hunting awhile for a poster(s) to top off my Tolkien shrine. This is by far one of the best I've seen from the franchise! Might have to search for it myself 👀 And congrats on your sliver labels!

    It’s a numbered/limited print from 2018 by Vance Kelly.

Agreed! @Wtdwhere did you get that poster? I’d love it in my office!

I got mine from eBay. You can usually find it around $100 or so.

  6. Last night I watched a Kurosawa masterpiece and one of my favorite movies ever, High and Low, on the big screen in 35mm at my local arthouse theater.

It was pretty interesting to watch so soon after having watched The Batman since a lot of the new Reeves' movie's DNA is heavily steeped in this Japanese classic noir detective thriller. The second half of this movie in particular lays the groundwork for many of the modern procedural thrillers we know and love today (Se7en, Zodiac, The Batman, etc.).

I cannot recommend this film highly enough.

  7. It's been a while since my last post on here but I've added a few really great editions to my collection, so thought I'd drop in for an update.

Recently received my Lord of the Rings and Hobbit HDZeta Silver sets courtesy of John's Winter Sale (#8 too!). Had to add these to my mini shrine.

I also recently received my UHD Club set for The Dark Knight trilogy and wow. What a stunning release. Another low number for this one (#19)

Finally, I grabbed the Shawshank Redemption HDZeta (#12) set since I wasn't a huge fan of the recent OAB release but felt like I needed something for the film.

All in all, a pretty good couple of weeks with some lucky low numbers joining the collection.

  8. Wanted to throw some suggestions out there of 5 films from each decade that don't have premiums (amaray or steelbook) yet that I'd like to see; going back 50 years to the 70s.

    1970s

    1. Taxi Driver (1976)
    2. Halloween (1978)
    3. Chinatown (1974)
    4. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
    5. All the President's Men (1976)

    1980s

    1. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
    2. Die Hard (1988)
    3. The Princess Bride (1987)
    4. Aliens (1986)
    5. Stand By Me (1986)

    1990s

    1. Silence of the Lambs (1991)
    2. Goodfellas (1990)
    3. Titanic (1997)
    4. The Big Lebowski (1998)
    5. Dazed and Confused (1993)

    2000s

    1. Zodiac (2007)
    2. Lost in Translation (2003)
    3. There Will Be Blood (2007)
    4. No Country for Old Men (2007)
    5. Catch Me If You Can (2002)

    2010s

    1. The Social Network (2010)
    2. Django Unchained (2012)
    3. Little Women (2019)
    4. The Favourite (2018)
    5. Lady Bird (2017)

Tried to get a good mix of things in there, any of these would be instant buys for me (and I suspect many others).

  9. Last night I watched The Batman in IMAX. Very well made detective noir thriller with some really solid performances. Most people don’t need a recommendation to see what will likely end up being a top 5 grossing film this year, but definitely catch it on the big screen if you can.

Tonight I watched another action-packed superhero thriller… Belfast. Ok, so maybe not. This movie is basically Branagh’s version of Roma with some very good cinematography and interesting performances. Also the best looking actors of all time playing his parents - quite the compliment.

  10. Finally watched Nightmare Alley (both the 1947 and 2021 films). I enjoyed them both quite a bit. I think the original is slightly better, though I deeply respect and admire what Del Toro did with the modern remake - I think he made some interesting choices (some of which work better than others). The performances by Cooper and Power as Stan are phenomenal in both, though I find Power's magnetism and charisma special in his portrayal.

Overall, I'd say both are definitely worth watching.

I'll be watching The Batman in IMAX in a few hours and I'm super excited!

  11. I watched Austin FC beat FC Cincinnati 5-0 in the cold rain for the season opener.

Then I watched the Kenneth Branagh version of Murder on the Orient Express (I watched Death on the Nile a few nights ago). While they aren't as good as the 70's versions, I do find them charming and fairly entertaining. Orient > Nile for me, mostly because of the cast - but I think Branagh's Poirot is well rendered in both.
