This is a great pick. The remake wasn't as good, but at least they brought back Peter Dinklage. Simon might be Alan Tudyk's best performance.

Maggie Gyllenhaal made her directorial debut with a film based on a novel by Elena Ferrante. It starred Olivia Colman, Ed Harris and Dakota Johnson. The film focuses on Colman's obsession with a young mother and her daughter while on vacation in a small, Greek coastal town. The film cuts back and forth between present day and flashbacks to Colman's past as a young mother. Colman's Leda is dealing with ghosts from her past when a brash American/Greek family share the beach with her as she begins to feel overwhelmed by her past which Johnson's Nina has stirred. The action of this movie is in Leda's head as she struggles with feelings of inadequacy, despair and guilt. An event on the beach leads to Leda inexplicably doing something she shouldn't have. Perhaps this is my problem and not the film's. As we watch movies with more twists and more action and more mystery, some movies which steer precisely where we anticipate them to go leave viewers wanting. That's the tragedy of this movie - is there is plenty of conflict and emotion experienced and resurfaced for Leda, but it feels like something more should happen. For Gyllenhaal's debut, it's a solid movie. It is a tragedy in all senses of the world and forces the viewer to consider patriarchal society and how women have often been handed the shortest straw. Expectations thrust on women to choose between motherhood, career and experiencing life as they want forces regret and one too many balls to juggle. The theme has stuck with me, but parts of the movies execution didn't resonate with me. As I mentioned before, I felt as lost in this as Nina's daughter at the beginning of the movie. The end of the movie does not clear this fog. However, I have considered that's precisely what Gyllenhaal intended - perhaps forcing the audience to experience Leda's feelings. Colman's performance is stunning. This role proved that her Best Actress Oscar win for The Favourite was no fluke. She flawlessly shows us Leda as someone who values her independence yet seeks others' affection, connection and approval. It's this conflict which drives the movie. Regardless, this didn't sit with me as I'd have liked. I give it 6/10 stars. It's worth a watch, but I'm not sure I'd watch it again.

There’s a show that’s been on Netflix for 3 seasons which chronicles timeless, blockbuster movies’ behind-the-scenes secrets and unknown tidbits. In season one, the series featured Die Hard, Dirty Dancing, Ghostbusters and Home Alone. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who loves these movies. You’ll find out tough decisions which were made (e.g. budget, casting and production decisions), and be filled with nostalgia while reliving some of those cinematic moments. Start with Die Hard - it’s a blast. Season 2 will be fun with focus on movies such as Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, Pretty Woman and Jurassic Park. Season 3 has a horror flavor with Halloween, Aliens, A Nightmare on Elm St., Friday the 13th and other non-horror movies - Elf and Coming to America. I found myself Jonesing for the Dirty Dancing Steelbook after watching that episode and wondering why I don’t own Home Alone on Steelbook. It’s a blast. Check it out and enjoy!

Quite excited to have my newest Steel. Upon receiving it, I have every Doctor Who Steelbook.

For years, I've really misunderstood Nicholas Cage. I've called him everything from a genius to a hack. I'm starting to lean into the former much more. It took one of those silly Facebook videos about movies which show up on my feed from time to time to solidify my stance of him being a genius of his craft. You see, it's not that Nicholas Cage is a bad actor who has taken on bad projects - the video argued. It's that Nicholas Cage takes on projects which allow him to experiment and stretch his range. Sure, in the 90's he took on some blockbuster projects, but everyone needs to get paid, right? Regardless, Nicholas Cage never fails to dedicate himself to whatever role he sinks himself into - and this movie is no exception. That brings us to Pig. For all intents and purposes, this is a movie that shouldn't have been able to have been made. Top it off with a marketing campaign which grossly mismanaged its promotion, and you have an IMDB audience and Rotten Tomatoes viewers (not critics) giving wide and mixed reviews. Many went into this movie expecting a John Wick-type movie, but it is anything but. Pig beguiles its viewers with loss, grief and ultimately catharsis. The movie casts Cage's Robin as a recluse who has no interest in the rest of the world yet with a mysterious past. I don't believe that I've seen a better performance from Nicholas Cage. Leaving Las Vegas was flashy and Adaptation had the twins gimmick. That's not to take away from the Oscar-nominated performances. It's meant to highlight the subtlety and care with which Cage navigated the role. I LOVED this movie, and I loved Cage in it. Do yourself a favor and look for Pig to watch. It currently streams on Hulu if you subscribe, it's a free watch. I'm crossing my fingers for Cage to be nominated for the performance, but I believe the crowded field of Best Actor means this independent film might get missed. Should he slip in, it will be an truly earned nomination. In addition, the script and supporting performances are strong. I've not been able to stop thinking about this movie and what it means for 5 days. If you don't go into this expecting a John Wick-style movie, I hope you'll be as satisfied with it as I was.
