First off, sorry for being away for so long. The Bunny Hunt has afforded me more time on this site that I have spent in weeks. I really do need to check in more often. I get a bit discouraged in writing these reviews, because I'm not sure anyone finds them particularly helpful or entertaining. Oh well - here goes another. I finished this movie, and I felt the same way that I did walking out of The Dark Knight. I felt like I'd seen something special - something that comes along once every 10-15 years. It's ironic that the same feeling hit me walking out of a movie which had the same character is it's protagonist and same subject matter. Matt Reeves turned…

What can I say about Midsommer? Let me start with: Metascore was at 72. IMDB had it at 7.6/10, and Rotten Tomatoes was in the 80s when it first caught my eye. I did not like Midsommer. I did NOT like Midsommer. That said, I respect what Midsommer was doing, and all the symbolism that goes with it. It's Ari Aster's 2nd feature. He's 2 for 2 with critical reception, but it's fair to say that both are not for everyone. His first feature, Heredity, is disturbing and laced with utter horror, and he's not strayed from that formula with Midsommer. The story follows Dani, a woman in a long term relationship with Christian. They seem to be going th…

Matthew Vaughn does know action. He cut his chops as a director on Layer Cake and didn't get a chance again for a few years when he directed the marvelous Stardust. Since then, his resume includes Kick-Ass, X-men: First Class and the Kingsman movies. Vaughn blends contemporary humor and action. As I looked through Vaughn's resume prior to writing this article, I can honestly say that I've not seen a movie of his which I've disliked - which brings me to The King's Man. The movie came in at a dire 42% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It did, however, receive an 80% for its audience score. I'm somewhere in between, but closer to the consensus of audience members. …

The Coen Brothers have tackled a modern Western, Homer, a detective/comedy mash-up and now, Joel has tackled Shakespeare. This is a fairly traditional adaptation of MacBeth. If you're not into Shakespeare, I'd not start with this. I'd consider Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing if you need your Denzel-Shakespeare partnership. If you're into Shakespeare, however, you'll adore this. To start, it's gorgeous to look at. The cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel is well deserved of its Oscar nomination. I've seen four of the five nominations (need to see West Side Story), and I can say with certainty that no movie better uses light and darkness than this one. Nigh…

Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley is a marvelously delivered Film Noir. My wife asked a couple of times: what's the plot? What's the point? I told her to be patient as it comes in at 2 hours and 30 minutes. It's very much a rise and fall story of Stanton Carlisle - which Bradley Cooper plays flawlessly. Stanton is a man with a past that haunts him. He runs away from it to the circus/carnival. He's young and easy on the eyes according to Toni Collette's Zeena the Seer. He establishes himself as useful early by helping to catch an escaped, dangerous geek. He learns quickly and demonstrates his usefulness to nearly everyone in the circus. He aspires to move beyon…

Maggie Gyllenhaal made her directorial debut with a film based on a novel by Elena Ferrante. It starred Olivia Colman, Ed Harris and Dakota Johnson. The film focuses on Colman's obsession with a young mother and her daughter while on vacation in a small, Greek coastal town. The film cuts back and forth between present day and flashbacks to Colman's past as a young mother. Colman's Leda is dealing with ghosts from her past when a brash American/Greek family share the beach with her as she begins to feel overwhelmed by her past which Johnson's Nina has stirred. The action of this movie is in Leda's head as she struggles with feelings of inadequacy, despair and guilt. …

For years, I've really misunderstood Nicholas Cage. I've called him everything from a genius to a hack. I'm starting to lean into the former much more. It took one of those silly Facebook videos about movies which show up on my feed from time to time to solidify my stance of him being a genius of his craft. You see, it's not that Nicholas Cage is a bad actor who has taken on bad projects - the video argued. It's that Nicholas Cage takes on projects which allow him to experiment and stretch his range. Sure, in the 90's he took on some blockbuster projects, but everyone needs to get paid, right? Regardless, Nicholas Cage never fails to dedicate himself to whatever ro…

Was always fascinated hearing about this monstrosity of a movie by Dennis Hopper that nearly ended his career. Missing out on limited releases by Indicator et al, I managed to get a really nice version from Carlotta finally. But what a mess of a movie! I can take Alex Cox westerns like Straight To Hell and Walker, but Hopper's The Last Movie is so disturbingly disjointed! Yet, some incredible scenic shots! For all the talent Hopper had with him at the time, and his own performance isn't too bad. But the whole film is so convoluted with metaphor and deflections, it's truly hard to get any semblance of any meaning out of it? At least for me. As an Easy Ride, it certainly is…

Okay, I just watched The Lighthouse, Rather intriguing film ... I admit that at this moment, my feeling is mixed, Already, film in black and white, and in 4: 3 ... Me who follows a lover of beautiful images very clear and smooth ... In short ... Fortunately, the duo Dafoe / Pattinson proves himself very quickly, and we are quickly interested in the intrigue, but I do not say more !!! Finally, several minutes after the face, I still think about it .... So I will register for GB MLife right now ๐ Anyway ... A film that I finally liked! ๐ 14/20

Saw Joker last night. I was engrossed the whole way through. The realism and how easily society can get thrown into chaos was very chilling. Score and pacing were perfect. Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal. Worthy successor to Heath Ledger, albeit slightly different take to it. Entire movie can be led to different interpretations.

25 years ago, I saw Clerks for the first time. I was at Woodstock '94, and they played an early screening of it on the 2nd night. Many had gone back to their tents to drink, smoke and spend time with their friends around campfires. My group just sat down on the field and watched it. I'd spent 2 full days of partying and listening to dozens of bands and had two more days to go. I'd never seen anything like it. It was in black and white. The acting was off. There wasn't much of a story. It was dialogue-heavy, and most of us couldn't hear a thing. In short, I hated it. I felt that my time had been wasted and wished that they'd just thrown another band o…

I don't want to give spoilers away, so I will keep this at high level. My anticipation of It, Chapter One (admittedly) was low, and I was pleasantly surprised. The opposite happened with Chapter Two. I went in with high expectations, and was let down. I mean, how couldn't I be excited. going into it? Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader headline a strong cast as Bill Skarsgard returns as Pennywise. Bill Hader shined as Richie, and Bill Skarsgard stole some scenes again. James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain fell flat - which surprised me. I also was a bit disappointed at what was excluded from the book. I understood why the screenplay was reworked…
