  1. I agree. But it truly is a marvellous movie! It's the uncanny style Wall-E has to react almost identical to in Buster Keaton and Woody Allen reaction manners. I never thought I'd like the movie as much as I do, but it's an unorthodox classic I'm glad Criterion regards as well now.
  2. Hilarious! LOL But seriously, a 4k of Living Dead? Wasn;t it shot on 16mm to begin with? I like The Beatles and all - but to let the best A.I. remaster them and put them on titanium LP's, I really don't think they'll sound THAT much better....
  3. Night Of The Living Dead yet again....? How much lipstick can one put on a pig!
  4. He's an 'acquired taste' I'll give you that! What floors me about his early movies is the amount of dialog he gives to the actors and/or the long takes he does of them. Absolutely fearless on all counts. Goddard and Truffaut were daring at best.
  5. Yikes, 30! I'm interested n picking up Pink Flamingos myself, but I already have the New Line set of John Waters which I think is pretty good. Yet I've being buying all of Criterion's recent releases as well, as I just love the Dreamlander's and John's commentaries and anecdotes.
  6. Dang! That 1 Click really does look awesome! Lucky guys!
  7. Holy Cripes! I didn't know it was going to look THAT good! Dang! The lenticular or whatever cover effect being used is awesome! Definitely a sweet release I shouldve paid more attention to!
  8. Does look nice, and is tempting. And as much as I love the movie - why 'Her'? So glad that Kimchi did it so nicely, and now Manta's doing it up - but why exactly? Was this movie really popular in Asia? Or because this movie can be cheaply had licensing wise? Or both? Or something entirely different? I kinda noticed it as well with Ex Machina to a degree. Another good movie, though not quite as good as Her IMHO. To me, they're just significant movies that we may look back on 20 years from now and say 'Damn! These guys were spot on!' Or like 2001 - "What the hell happened? I can't even get my Roomba to work anymore!"
  9. Man, that is still so gorgeous to me! And I missed it! ;(
  10. What I like about the movie is how subtle the science fiction futuristic aspect is. Kinda like A Clockwork Orange, it could be 50 years from now, or it could be next week. And Jaoquin's job being the personalized sentimental poet for people too lazy to express themselves decently to supposed loved ones. And then that video game he plays at home - that cracked me up! So if ones into sociology and/or psychology - this movie is AWESOME I'd say. But if looking for Black Widow and Soylent Green, you will be let down by Her I'm sure.
  11. Thanks guys. I too was kinda surprised to see this Pleasure trailer in English with French subtitles. Then again, this was for the theatrical promo - so won't be on disc for a while I'm sure. But will be interesting to see how they do release it in physical form. Looks like a movie ripe for Vinegar Syndrome, Severin or Anti-World. So maybe best to be patient then.
  12. Just curious if anyone has bought anything from this new Joker label out of France? I know they had a really nice edition of Parasite a while back, but only with French subtitles. This latest movie they're touting called Pleasure looks interesting to me, and apparently is in English with french subtitles. Is the company easy to deal with, shipping decent, quality decent? I'm no good with French, and let Google translate everything for me with Amazon.FR. So hopefully this Joker place is as easy to deal with?
  13. Its worth seeing, I'll give you that. And I like challenging movies myself as a rule. But honestly The Last Movie is like Two Lane Blacktop, but the cars are going in different directions. There is a commentary by Alex Cox on my version which I started to get into after watching, but was so tired I had to turn it off. But I'll be interested to hear what he got out of it all. At least with Cox's movies there's a cohesive playfulness to it all - as warped as it may seem. Something that sticks with the viewer, makes them think, makes them want to learn more. Straight To Hell, Walker, and Tombstone Rashomon. Those ones I kinda 'get' when I watch them. The one he loses me with though is Searchers 2.0 - and that could be just me trying to pair it with John Wayne's original The Searchers. And if there is to be any commonality of the two, I can't see it for the life of me? So same with The Last Movie. It's like Hopper is trying to say goodbye to 'the old standards' and point out how anyone can make a movie however and anywhere they want - that much is evident in the movie in a surreal way. But the rest is just so all over the place, and at best is Hopper's own inner turmoil after the success of Easy Rider and not sure what to deliver next? He claims on the intro he did back in 2007 he was trying to go beyond Goddard and the french new wave. But I'd say he was more the true epitome of Col. Kurtz, and simply went 'beyond the pale' with making The Last Movie.
  14. Was always fascinated hearing about this monstrosity of a movie by Dennis Hopper that nearly ended his career. Missing out on limited releases by Indicator et al, I managed to get a really nice version from Carlotta finally. But what a mess of a movie! I can take Alex Cox westerns like Straight To Hell and Walker, but Hopper's The Last Movie is so disturbingly disjointed! Yet, some incredible scenic shots! For all the talent Hopper had with him at the time, and his own performance isn't too bad. But the whole film is so convoluted with metaphor and deflections, it's truly hard to get any semblance of any meaning out of it? At least for me. As an Easy Ride, it certainly is not! But glad Dennis made The Hot Spot and Colors after, as those are much more digestible movies. Yet if he only could embody the scenic beauty of The Last Movie into those films, he'd out score Terrance Malick for sure!
  15. I'm with you! It's like buying a car. One thing to read about it in Motor Trend. Another thing to see it in a showroom!
  16. Probably one of the BEST movies in how A.I. will truly affect us - and we may affect it; in the not too distant future. And Spike Jonze and Joaguin Phoenix are just so subtle in the look and feel of the movie. And Scarlet Johannsen's voice... Damn! Hard not to fall in love with it! Spike and Bong Joon Ho are the two best new film makers of the 21st century IMHO, and wish Spike would be as fast as Bong with his projects. But then he get wrapped up with Johnny Knoxville and perpetuates Jackass movies - go figure? Then again, if I could hang with Johnny Knoxville, I'd give up all other ambitions as well. But 'Her' is the only 1 Click I'd truly like to have of Kimchi's still. If it wasn't so outrageously priced, I'd get it in a second! I have the 'numerical' version with Scarlett's image on the front all done in 0's and 1's. So hoping Manta puts the same effort in as Kimchi did, as I say Kimchi's 1 Click is more a prophetic statement that really ties in with the spirit of the movie.
  17. With you on that Grendel! Whatever happened to 'free trade'? I like ordering from Criterion directly, as they offer 'points' for purchases made through them - even during their FLASH sales. Haven't tried this 'Unobstructed View' alternative for us Canucks. But again - they gotta pay shipping to get it to them, and then WE gotta paying shipping to get it to us. So I don't see much savings when I work out those prices as well. I ordered from Criterion recently, and now they strictly use DHL to deliver, and my package already got returned to Criterion! I asked if they could just use USPS, as it's not many DVD's I ordered - but nope! Try again with DHL, and still not here! Be so nice if Criterion could invest in a 'branch office' here in Toronto or anywhere in the country. That would probably cut out shipping costs all together to get merch up here. AND could be a nice partnership with the NFB and Quebec film board to more easily obtain and preserve some of our lesser known Canadian gems! (Goin' Down The Road, Rip Off, The Silent Partner, The Grey Fox, In The Belly Of The Dragon, etc.)
  18. I sympathize too. Mr. Fox has grown on me over time, but Isle Of Dogs really hasn't. Probably because I'm a cat person. LOL But I do marvel at Wes' use of pseudo Japanese culture and extent of detail in Isle than Mr. Fox. A lot more 'eye candy' when you start looking at the backgrounds and such.
  19. Pretty happy with Criterion's release of Grand Budapest. And still have yet to see Moonrise Kingdom - though it looks intriguing! But can't say I'm a complete fan of all of Wes' movies. Rushmore was cute, Life Aquatic just seemed 'sunken', and The Royal Tennenbaums - WTF??? But Mr. Fox, Grand Budapest, and Isle Of Dogs are my 3 faves of his so far!
  20. I like my Black Baron's edition - but this looks dang tempting as well! Great movie indeed!
