@Fortis93 Elias how is the movie? 🧐

While I thought Caleb Landry Jones' performance was good, the movie itself was okay. I didn't love it.

The movie was met with backlash as it's about the real-life shooter responsible for one of the worst massacres/shootings in Australian history - the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre. The local residents of the area where these events took place protested against the filmmakers shooting there, so they had to film it elsewhere.

While I'm not against movies showing how these criminals are driven to such acts, and the issues of mental-health, gun-control, etc. I think there's a fine line between trying to be objective and filmmakers going out of their way to humanise them and paint them purely as victims without any agency, especially at the expense of the real victims affected by this tragedy.

For example, this real killer, Martin Bryant, was known to have violent, psychopathic tendencies growing up such as harming animals, etc. But the movie shies away from this. It picks and chooses what to show and takes creative licences to try and make him out to be more of a victim than I think he was.

What a magnificent performance Jones presents here - simply phenomenal!

@Fortis93 sorry I missed this bud.  Was going through notifications and just saw it.

My connections are on the creative/production side and not on the studio side but I certainly can give you my thoughts.

There's something odd going on here, imo.  First off, it's actually $140 mil world wide, and that is probably a realistic P&A number for this type of film these days, and not as excessive as some would say.  I'm sure there are loads of quick turnaround backend bonus's for talent: that self-funded $120 mil production budget is prob closer to $150 when all the points are paid, so that makes the $140 he's asking for even less shocking.

I'm starting to think that this whole thing is part of the marketing of the film.  Poor Francis, can't find a home for his last movie, it's so convoluted, but brilliant, daring, but can't be positioned in the market, it's "batshit".  This is marketing gold, and look how much HR, Variety, social, etc, are talking about this film.  I wouldn't be surprised if he has a handshake deal already, and this is typical Hollywood shenanigans to create buzz at Cannes, and that was the "plan" all along.   Too conspiratorial?

Certainly Neon would be willing to do it, but they and A24 probably don't have the money to push this film out, and it isn't on brand for A24, really.  Searchlight or Focus would be a good guess, but Focus is signaling they're out, I've read.  Apple?  I just can't imagine Coppola would settle for streaming only, he is part of the fabric of cinema, and he wants this thing in the theaters, and while he's not looking for an IMAX deal, he evidently had some IMAX tech consulting on production so it could be shown in IMAX.  Even if he has to pay the P&A himself, and put the studio in first position to recoup distribution, I think he'd do that before streaming only (but I really don't know).  Would he sell it?  Yikes, it's hard to believe he'd give up any control, and this is most likely what he'd have to do for a buy out.

Or the movie could just suck and no one wants it.  But, it sure is getting a lot of "free" buzz, aye?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was part of their marketing ploy, especially if it'll save them a couple of bucks.

Reminds me a bit of the buzz and articles surrounding the release of Joker.

People were worried the movie would be controversial and encourage/incite school shooters. If that was part of their marketing, it definitely worked. 😅

It still surprises me how much that movie made against its budget.

Do something with old people, mothers-in-law fell in the garage. I wanted to water flowers and clean windows, of course you also have to clean windows in this bad weather. Now she was lying there in the wet and no one heard her calling..... The emergency doctor flew in by helicopter and the ambulance took her away, suspected of a dislocated shoulder.

I'm really sorry to hear that Lindy.

    I hope she's okay.

While my comment was in jest, it is absolutely true that the vinyl/audiophile world is toxic.  Not joking, MP, and even the steel discord, reddit, etc, are so much more fun to be a part of than the online vinyl/audiophile world.  Just brutal elitism and one-upping all the time.  The sharing and community that goes on here is virtually non-existent in that world.

This is one of many reasons why I took a liking to MP when it came to the world of movies (or "film" for the snobs 😁) and physical media.

Seriously. It seems like they only have WB now. Otherwise, I just don’t understand why it seems like they’re doing everything in their power to not announce Oppenheimer after teasing it last year. And what happened with their discless CP line? Feels like an age since they announced anything for that, too. I wonder what’s going on over there.

I'm thinking there's some licensing issue.

I don't think it's an issue of Oppenheimer not being a popular enough title (both in China and the rest of the world) considering how much the film grossed and how well the steelbook itself sold.

This is good to see. I visit two massive flea markets at least 3 times a month and the people with tables selling physical media are always being swarmed. It doesn't matter if it's blu ray dvd or vhs the stuff sells like crazy used and new. One seller has a massive sign hanging in his area that says unlike cable or a streaming bill physical media doesn't cost you a dime more once you buy it. he has another sign that says once you buy physical media you own it and it can't be erased by contractual updates.

I was at a garage sale a couple of weeks ago and managed to snag a VHS set of the Indiana Jones trilogy that included a collectible map for $6.

It's not something that I really needed, but I thought it would be cool to have.

I grew up watching these movies on VHS anyway.

They would be playing on TV and my dad would tape them, so that's how we would watch them.
