  1. What I like about the movie is how subtle the science fiction futuristic aspect is. Kinda like A Clockwork Orange, it could be 50 years from now, or it could be next week. And Jaoquin's job being the personalized sentimental poet for people too lazy to express themselves decently to supposed loved ones. And then that video game he plays at home - that cracked me up! So if ones into sociology and/or psychology - this movie is AWESOME I'd say. But if looking for Black Widow and Soylent Green, you will be let down by Her I'm sure.

  2. Thanks guys. I too was kinda surprised to see this Pleasure trailer in English with French subtitles. Then again, this was for the theatrical promo - so won't be on disc for a while I'm sure. But will be interesting to see how they do release it in physical form. Looks like a movie ripe for Vinegar Syndrome, Severin or Anti-World. So maybe best to be patient then. ;)

  3. Just curious if anyone has bought anything from this new Joker label out of France? I know they had a really nice edition of Parasite a while back, but only with French subtitles. This latest movie they're touting called Pleasure looks interesting to me, and apparently is in English with french subtitles. Is the company easy to deal with, shipping decent, quality decent?

I'm no good with French, and let Google translate everything for me with Amazon.FR. So hopefully this Joker place is as easy to deal with?

  4. Its worth seeing, I'll give you that. And I like challenging movies myself as a rule. But honestly The Last Movie is like Two Lane Blacktop, but the cars are going in different directions. There is a commentary by Alex Cox on my version which I started to get into after watching, but was so tired I had to turn it off. But I'll be interested to hear what he got out of it all. At least with Cox's movies there's a cohesive playfulness to it all - as warped as it may seem. Something that sticks with the viewer, makes them think, makes them want to learn more. Straight To Hell, Walker, and Tombstone Rashomon. Those ones I kinda 'get' when I watch them. The one he loses me with though is Searchers 2.0 - and that could be just me trying to pair it with John Wayne's original The Searchers. And if there is to be any commonality of the two, I can't see it for the life of me? So same with The Last Movie. It's like Hopper is trying to say goodbye to 'the old standards' and point out how anyone can make a movie however and anywhere they want - that much is evident in the movie in a surreal way. But the rest is just so all over the place, and at best is Hopper's own inner turmoil after the success of Easy Rider and not sure what to deliver next? He claims on the intro he did back in 2007 he was trying to go beyond Goddard and the french new wave. But I'd say he was more the true epitome of Col. Kurtz, and simply went 'beyond the pale' with making The Last Movie. ;)

  5. Was always fascinated hearing about this monstrosity of a movie by Dennis Hopper that nearly ended his career. Missing out on limited releases by Indicator et al, I managed to get a really nice version from Carlotta finally. But what a mess of a movie! I can take Alex Cox westerns like Straight To Hell and Walker, but Hopper's The Last Movie is so disturbingly disjointed! Yet, some incredible scenic shots! For all the talent Hopper had with him at the time, and his own performance isn't too bad. But the whole film is so convoluted with metaphor and deflections, it's truly hard to get any semblance of any meaning out of it? At least for me. As an Easy Ride, it certainly is not! But glad Dennis made The Hot Spot and Colors after, as those are much more digestible movies. Yet if he only could embody the scenic beauty of The Last Movie into those films, he'd out score Terrance Malick for sure!

Man, really putting us in a pickle without seeing beauty shots. I remember liking the movie but can’t justify jumping on a one click without seeing anything. Hopefully once beauty shots are out I can manage to get a full slip at least. Looks like the list is getting long quick though! Yikes

I'm with you! It's like buying a car. One thing to read about it in Motor Trend. Another thing to see it in a showroom! ;)

  7. Probably one of the BEST movies in how A.I. will truly affect us - and we may affect it; in the not too distant future. And Spike Jonze and Joaguin Phoenix are just so subtle in the look and feel of the movie. And Scarlet Johannsen's voice... Damn! Hard not to fall in love with it! Spike and Bong Joon Ho are the two best new film makers of the 21st century IMHO, and wish Spike would be as fast as Bong with his projects. But then he get wrapped up with Johnny Knoxville and perpetuates Jackass movies - go figure? Then again, if I could hang with Johnny Knoxville, I'd give up all other ambitions as well. ;) But 'Her' is the only 1 Click I'd truly like to have of Kimchi's still. If it wasn't so outrageously priced, I'd get it in a second! I have the 'numerical' version with Scarlett's image on the front all done in 0's and 1's. So hoping Manta puts the same effort in as Kimchi did, as I say Kimchi's 1 Click is more a prophetic statement that really ties in with the spirit of the movie.

  8. Indeed! Just got my Imprint version of 'Fire In The Sky' and am loving it! Also just got my copy of Carlotta Films special release of 'Network', and is just beautiful! Now Fire In The Sky I don't mind giving up my bare bone DVD at all. But with Network, as beautiful as Carlotta's version is - I don't know a lick of French! And the only extra with it is a nice overview of Sidney Lumet's life and career which I've never seen. So definitely holding onto my double disc anniversary DVD version still. But just makes my heart feel good that a company like Carlotta went to such trouble to honor a CLASSIC film the way they did! And I'm sure if Black Barron's or Kimchi et al were to put out their version of Network, I'd buy those too! Again, just to appreciate others appreciation of such a great movie! Whereas something like Fire In The Sky - if Arrow or someone were to 'up the ante' with an even better release, I think I'd stick with Imprint's for awhile still. And unless I saw a Arrow version in good condition in a used store at a cheap price - maybe?

  9. Thanks Veum! I think that's what got me started on this topic, as I was gazing at the recent BIG SALE going on before Christmas here. Amazing outlay of titles! And the proverbial 'Yes, No, Maybe?' looking at all of them. LOL But this is certainly the place for cinephiles, collectors, investors, and just freaks about movies! :)

  10. Thanks Arfy. I too am somewhat tempted to be an 'investor' of sorts with these. And I'm amazed how some have near 'telepathic abilities' to know who's releasing what, when, and be able to get 002 of a limited edition of say 50 copies of a Nostromo model and 4k edition of Alien before anyone could say 'what?'. LOL Those folks fascinate me as well how they're so 'on it' at all times, and seem to have an inexhaustible bank account too!

  11. Thanks guys! And thank you Veum - what a great list! Recently discovered Imprint releases from Australia, and have pre-ordered their release of Black Sunday. So I hate to say that list maybe already outdated a bit? LOL I was lucky to get Imprints release of Major Dundee, and dare I say they're dang close to 'premium quality'! Great coverage and breakdown of the movie in both directors and theatrical cuts, housed in a nice sturdy picturesque case.

But yes, I forget who had put out the premium edition of The Sting just past. Great movie, and the premium looked somewhat neat. But overall was kinda lame for a few extras that I didn't really need.

So I'm glad you guys are the same to with 'controlling yourselves' to stick with what works best for you, and not get to intimidated by some of these premiums. Though I'm sure there's no doubt a few here that are maybe the opposite - go hog wild and break the bank every chance they get. And that's okay too - I guess to a degree. ;)

  12. I've recently joined the core of 'Purely Region Free' this Christmas with a new Sony player I got myself. Mainly for the fact that 101 Films issued a great release of the movie Phase IV, which seems like a 'anglophile' version of Carlotta Film's collectable version of Phase IV. But then I see Carlotta has a nice edition of my FAVE movie 'Network' - so I 'had to' get that! So I've recently been on a hunt via British/Australian/French etc. to get movies I really like and are superior to NA releases (if they even exist?) Yet, I still keep an eye here to see what the real 'high end' boutiques are coming out with. But curious who here has a 'true appreciation' vs. design, packaging, and rarity? And I don't mean that in any disrespectful way either. Here's an example I'll give - I love the movie 'Ernest & Celestine', animated french film with french audio and a brilliant English cast  voice over. Loved my DVD of it, but saw Plain Archive did a release of it. So I scored that and did away with the DVD. PA's version is beautiful indeed, BUT - only has the french voice over with English subtitles! So a bit dismayed at that. So I bought the DVD again, but held onto my PA as it's just so nicely done still. Now with something like KIMCHI's release of Irreversible, again I had the DVD originally, got KIMCHI's version - and dismayed that extras and all were in French only. Nice packaging and all, but is it something I 'really need'? Great movie still, and the DVD gave me all I could hope for - so let go of the KIMCHI one then. Even with Joker - I wanted to see it, went in on the group buy here for what ever version was first to come out. Got it watched it, and it was 'okay' (not a BIG comic book fan, and still say Heath was the best!) So I quickly turned around and sold it to someone that may better appreciate it. Loosing a couple of bucks in the process for the privilege of getting to see it at least, and a 'boutique' version at that. So now on the other hand, my other two fave movies are Spike Jonze 'Her' and Brian De Palma's Phantom Of The Paradise. I have KIMCHI's release of Her with Scarlet on the front and really enjoy it. BUT - I still want KIMCHI's lenticular and/or 1 click version of it still - I love the movie THAT much! Same with Phantom Of The Paradise, even though I have the Shout! release - that Carlotta FIlms version that's now OOP still looks damn good to me!

So I guess what I'm interested in finding out here is who's buying unique boutiques out of sheer love and respect for certain titles, or as 'an experience' to hopefully enjoy a new movie and/or better appreciate the movie with the extra care gone into packaging and all? And/or as a sheer 'investment strategy' to either check out an unknown movie and sell it for more later on, or merely keep it sealed and unwatched to sell it pristine down the road? Needless to say, I feel like I'm getting carried away either way I go with my appreciation and fascination with either the classics, obscure faves, and just flashy packaging that makes a title look interesting.

  13. With you on that Grendel! Whatever happened to 'free trade'? I like ordering from Criterion directly, as they offer 'points' for purchases made through them - even during their FLASH sales. Haven't tried this 'Unobstructed View' alternative for us Canucks. But again - they gotta pay shipping to get it to them, and then WE gotta paying shipping to get it to us. So I don't see much savings when I work out those prices as well. I ordered from Criterion recently, and now they strictly use DHL to deliver, and my package already got returned to Criterion! I asked if they could just use USPS, as it's not many DVD's I ordered - but nope! Try again with DHL, and still not here! Be so nice if Criterion could invest in a 'branch office' here in Toronto or anywhere in the country. That would probably cut out shipping costs all together to get merch up here. AND could be a nice partnership with the NFB and Quebec film board to more easily obtain and preserve some of our lesser known Canadian gems! (Goin' Down The Road, Rip Off, The Silent Partner, The Grey Fox, In The Belly Of The Dragon, etc.)

Wes Anderson is one of my favourite directors but IoD is probably my least favourite of his films - I was really waiting on the artwork before deciding whether I wanted to have it as part of my collection (after buying the horrible standard steelbook release which I would be very, very happy to replace 😆) - sadly by the time I’d seen the art, it was too late

I sympathize too. Mr. Fox has grown on me over time, but Isle Of Dogs really hasn't. Probably because I'm a cat person. LOL But I do marvel at Wes' use of pseudo Japanese culture  and extent of detail in Isle than Mr. Fox. A lot more 'eye candy' when you start looking at the backgrounds and such.

Entering the mainstream world of John Waters.

<Cry Baby> and <Serial Mom> were two of John Waters's most recognised masterpieces after he gone into mainstream film-making.

In the 70s, John Waters released mainly unconventional films. However, his love for The Wizard of Oz exposed him to the Hollywood style of film-making. He understood how destructive pervasive films can be to cultures when common and simple daily ideas were presented in a distorted manner in movies.

That also lead to Johnny Depp claiming that <Cry Baby> was a hallucinogenic version of Grease.

In both <Cry Baby> and <Serial Mom>, John Waters created characters that were mainstream who made decisions that went against the normal.

Diskino is proud to announce that they will be working on bringing the works of John Waters to collectors!

As much as I love John and ALL his movies, this is getting a BIT much! I prize my New Line set of his (Unfaithfully Yours...?) There was a sexy steel book of Serial Mom a few years back. And Criterion has recently gotten into his old 'masterpieces', which I begrudgingly bought as I love John's and his Dreamlander's commentary and all so much. But Diskino now....? Don't think it will have anymore than the old New Line releases. At least I hope not! Good for John though, the more the merrier! :)

Always had a soft spot for this movie. Kinda 'there and not there' - in that it has a great cast, action, and soundtrack. But is so subtle where one would expect more, and over dramatic where one would expect less. Yet, I'm sure the irony is that is how Viet Nam felt to many of the soldiers there at the time as well. Looks like KIMCHI is putting out a nice release which I got my dibs on already. But I'm not sure what 'Initial Press Edition' means? I have the DVD currently, and lacks the additional extras. But were they on the NA Blu-Ray release that is now OOP or something?

  17. Good lord! I'll say they're like Criterion! Lovely releases of Shampoo and Anatomy Of A Murder! May have to splurge on that Last Movie of Dennis Hoppers. Was so hoping to get the Indicator version. But being all in French might make the movie more understandable now. LOL Thanks for the heads up! :)
