Maybe it's because my wife and I are planning on getting pregnant this month, but that movie messed us up. I thought it was a really strong directorial debut with confident direction and efficient, if not showy, photography. I thought it relied maybe a little too heavily on flashbacks, but overall it did what it needed to do to tell the story and deliver on the film's emotional core.
I thought the performances were definitely the standouts, with Colman, Buckley, and Johnson all excelling. I was especially impressed with Jessie Buckley.
If you get a chance, check out my review on the site, it’d be good to get a conversation going on that thread.

OLIVIA COLMAN HYPE
I just watched The Lost Daughter last night. Colman was amazing in it - not as amazing as The Favourite - but amazing. I was a bit let down by the story. I wrote a review of it in the Movie Review section.

I think she's likely to get one, but this one was a personal choice. I was immensely disappointed with her performance in the film. I thought she was incredibly one-dimensional and more or less a prop/set dressing. I was disappointed too, because I think she's capable of giving a great performance, but the script didn't do her many favors in my opinion.
Also, I was truly stunned by Alana Haim's magnetism and charisma in Licorice Pizza. Without her, that movie absolutely doesn't work and she does a phenomenal job with a fairly confused and enigmatic character.
My wife would agree with you on Dunst. I promoted the movie to her as the front-runner for Best Pic and Best Supporting Actress, and halfway through she said, “Unless Dunst has a big scene coming up, I’m not seeing it.”
I, on the other hand, loved her. I too have enjoyed her past performance - I still argue that she should have an Oscar nod for Interview with a Vampire. She was tremendous in Fargo Season 2. For me, I loved that she was; A. mailing it in - which I think her character, Rose, was too, and B. coasting through life, ignoring signs that she just might be living the rest of her life with a sociopath. I thought it was very well done with what she had to work with from the page.
We’ve yet to see Licorice Pizza.

Good morning all. In years past, I used to host an Oscar Party. I did this every year for about 15 years. When my first wife and I divorced, I tried to keep it going for a couple more years, but I just ran out of gas. I still love watching The Oscars and movies which are nominated for Academy Awards. I thought it would be fun to start a thread for others interested in The Oscars in predicting nominations for the major categories. I'd love to start. My predictions will be below with movies which I've seen underlined. I'll also place them in order of likelihood of being nominated from top to bottom If you'd like to join the fun, I'd love to chat with you about them... This is a great pick. The remake wasn't as good, but at least they brought back Peter Dinklage. Simon might be Alan Tudyk's best performance.

Maggie Gyllenhaal made her directorial debut with a film based on a novel by Elena Ferrante. It starred Olivia Colman, Ed Harris and Dakota Johnson. The film focuses on Colman's obsession with a young mother and her daughter while on vacation in a small, Greek coastal town. The film cuts back and forth between present day and flashbacks to Colman's past as a young mother. Colman's Leda is dealing with ghosts from her past when a brash American/Greek family share the beach with her as she begins to feel overwhelmed by her past which Johnson's Nina has stirred. The action of this movie is in Leda's head as she struggles with feelings of inadequacy, despair and guilt. An event on the beach leads to Leda inexplicably doing something she shouldn't have.
Perhaps this is my problem and not the film's. As we watch movies with more twists and more action and more mystery, some movies which steer precisely where we anticipate them to go leave viewers wanting. That's the tragedy of this movie - is there is plenty of conflict and emotion experienced and resurfaced for Leda, but it feels like something more should happen. For Gyllenhaal's debut, it's a solid movie. It is a tragedy in all senses of the world and forces the viewer to consider patriarchal society and how women have often been handed the shortest straw. Expectations thrust on women to choose between motherhood, career and experiencing life as they want forces regret and one too many balls to juggle.
The theme has stuck with me, but parts of the movies execution didn't resonate with me. As I mentioned before, I felt as lost in this as Nina's daughter at the beginning of the movie. The end of the movie does not clear this fog. However, I have considered that's precisely what Gyllenhaal intended - perhaps forcing the audience to experience Leda's feelings. Colman's performance is stunning. This role proved that her Best Actress Oscar win for The Favourite was no fluke. She flawlessly shows us Leda as someone who values her independence yet seeks others' affection, connection and approval. It's this conflict which drives the movie. Regardless, this didn't sit with me as I'd have liked. I give it 6/10 stars. It's worth a watch, but I'm not sure I'd watch it again.

If you didn't get a renewal invite either, you're not alone. A little caught off guard/surprised right now
I’m not seeing one - but if that’s the way it shakes out, I get it. If everyone has platinum status, then no one has platinum status.

Not all Plats will be able to renew , that is the sad news. Most will but not all.
Some Gold will have a chance to renew to Platinum , most wont.
A few new members WILL get the chance to jump right onboard as a Platinum member.
I will say this , the way our Admins think , the more activity you bring to the Forum (being active) WILL make a significant impact on the next cycle. So everyone will have a chance to
get a Platinum , it is up to you AND of course some luck goes with that as well.
UPDATE on this new renewal cycle :
ALL invites have been sent out to the Platinum Members who are going to be invited this cycle.
YOU dont have to really worry about you maybe not getting an Email or that it ends up somewhere in a different Folder because all you have to do is either be logged in already or log in and you will see the notification there where Notifications are kept.
Ive added a few screenshots to help.
1. Look up towards the right part of the screen , you will see the BELL icon , that is where your Notifications that you receive from the System are kept.
2. Once you find it and hoover over it, it will show you what the symbol is for .....
3. Click on it and it will show you the Notifications you have , after that just click on it and it will take you to where you need to go ... just like magic ...
So GOLD members will be invited tomorrow (my time) , i dont know the exact time so YES you will have to check in every now and then . We will let you know when the invites have been sent , you will need to act realively fast but it should be enough time so no need to get all stressed out over it.
Take care
ps. i lost the card game , both hands !
Uhm…
