Top 10 Most Evil Movie Villains

Recommended Posts

Villains have been a staple of cinema dating back to the German expressionism of the 1920's (who can forget Hans Beckert, the serial child rapist/killer from Fritz Lang's masterpiece 'M').

Some are charming psychopaths (Hitchcock in particular was fond of them), some are crazy megalomaniacs (who are very bad at killing a certain British secret agent), while others are adept at using both manipulation and brute force (TDKR's Bane comes to mind).

What is certain is that they are all unmistakably  E V I L .

This top 10 is not about ranking the best villains but rather those who elicit the strongest emotional response in each of us (in this case fear, horror and disgust would be the primary emotions we're aiming for).

Name the villain as well as the movie he/she's from.

There's a difference between most evil and greatest villains.

Here is the most evil list:

  1. The Joker - The Dark Knight as portrayed by Heath Ledger (Best Supporting Actor win) "Do I look like a guy with a plan?"
  2. Tyler Durden - Fight Club as portrayed Brad Pitt "You're not your f$^&^*ing khakis."
  3. Anton Chigurh - No Country for Old Men as portrayed by Javier Bardem (Best Supporting Actor win) "What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss?"
  4. Hannibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs as portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins (Best Actor win) "I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner."
  5. Amon Goeth - Schindler's List as portrayed by Ralph Fiennes (Best Supporting Actor nomination) "I pardon you."
  6. Hans Gruber - Die Hard as portrayed by Alan Rickman "I am going to count to three.  There will not be a four."
  7. Lord Voldemort - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2 as portrayed by Ralph Fiennes "Why do you live?"
  8. Harry - In Bruges as portrayed by Ralph Fiennes "An Uzi? I'm not from South Central Los f$&&^ing Angeles.  I didn't come here to shoot twenty black ten year olds in a drive by. I want a normal gun for a normal person."
  9. Frank (The Man in Black) - Once Upon a Time in the West as portrayed by Henry Fonda "People scare better when they're dyin."
  10. Little Bill Daggett - Unforgiven as portrayed by Gene Hackman (Best Supporting Actor win) "You been talking about that Queen of yours, again, Bob? <punches Bob in the face> On Independence Day?"

Yes - 3 Ralph Fiennes roles.  He's that good at being bad.  And who would have thought that Hollywood tried to set him up as a romantic lead after Schindler's List.  They should have known better.

Chaos and insanity rule my list as you can see.

I could not in good conscious give the following characters a top 10 slot due to them either redeeming themselves or being caricatures of what a villain should be - which both reduces the complexity with which a good villain should embody.  The other factor that lowered ratings was certain villains hanging around too long in too many campy films

  • Darth Vader
  • Freddy Kruger
  • Michael Myers
  • Gollum
