I don’t have much to add regarding the actual show, because I’ve only seen bits and pieces of episodes here & there, but there was some points brought up that caught my attention.
@psychoscot You didn’t ask for my opinion or advice, but if you seriously care about having healthy discussions about the entertainment you like it would be best in the future not to express yourself using catch phrases that can be interpreted as offensive or dismissive of other people.
You didn’t really answer @Intentcoin question. Your comment doesn’t explain why “it matters”. Characters are changed all the time when stories go from book to television or movies. It’s completely fine if you don’t like the changes, but why don’t you like the changes, because damn near ever book turned to film or television has changes.
Why did you specifically use these characters as examples? The reason why I’m asking is because the reasons why you may be uncomfortable or not a fan of the casting of this show is NOT the same reasons why Black people or anyone who is familiar with Hollywood’s history would be upset about these characters you picked in particular being color changed.
Blade is a bad example anyways, because Blade doesn’t have to be black. The character just so happens to be black, & could be written to be played by any talented actor. With that said people would have a backlash to color changing this character & that’s mostly because Hollywood has a past of racism in the casting process.
People would flip out when minority characters are colored changed, because there hasn’t been enough representation of minorities characters in Mainstream entertainment to completely wash away the bad blood of Hollywood’s past mistakes.
You understand what I’m explaining? It’s one thing to be uncomfortable when characters are changed, & the changes that are made fundamentally changes the character’s identity. I agree that changes like that are usually unnecessary & it would be better to just create a new character.
Shaft, & Black Panther are characters who’s color is very important to their character’s identity, but that’s not the main reason why most people would be upset if their color was changed. The issues are much deeper than character identity with minority characters.
To make your points more clear you could have picked other fair skinned characters who’s identity is directly connected to their culture. You picking black characters to express your point can be misinterpreted as you trolling, trying to be funny or something worse.
